Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Arrived on time and apparently etrailer and Kenda load star tires are THE tire to go with. Will come back to check up later. Rubber was fresh and no dry rot as I have gotten tires from other places that were past expiration date and showed signs of dry rot before mounted.

Comments
Have tripped all over western plains and put thousands of miles on these tires. I stand by them as a solid choice. My friend had to go with another type of tire as these were out of stock. Those were nowhere near in the same shape as mine by trip’s end. He may very well likely have to upgrade soon as they were worn unevenly.

Fit perfectly on my 1989 Coleman Shenandoah. Replaced the original rims and tires from 2007 for my complete refurb. They look great.

by:

I received exactly what I ordered...there was a brief delay in its shipping however. etrailer did contact me to advise me of the delay and even offered me an alternative pair that could ship sooner but I chose to wait and stick with my original order.
I definitely like (and trust) etrailer and will continue to do business with them whenever possible

by:

Great company to buy from. Very good price, good quality tires and rims, and arrived a day early. Very well packaged. Would definitely buy again.

by:

These have been great little wheels for my ‘88 Coleman pop up camper. We have made a few dozen 1-2 hour trips and one 5 hour trip their first year and they’ve been great. They were marginally more expensive than just the tires and with my rims being original to the unit, I figured the hassle and cost of having the tires mounted was worth the extra money. I just bought the entire wheel and a new breaker bar for the 33yo lugs and did it myself. Shoulda gotten shiny new lugs but still very happy.

by:

Excellent experience with e trailer. Product wasn't very hard to find on the site.

by:

I am building a homemade atv log skidder with the wheels and tires I purchased from you. thank you for the fast shipping. I will try and send you pictures when its done. Thanks again

by:

We have these tires & wheels mounted on our Coleman tent trailer and they work very well. They provide a smooth ride and appear to be well balanced. I replace trailer tires every 5 years and will upsize to 12 inch when I order replacements to provide a little more clearance.

by:

These tires are spectacular and the service is even better! I opted for the 10 Plies and we have no trouble clearing land and worrying about twigs or pokes in my tractor tires.
Etrailer person was extremely helpful in determining my size with mixed information and provided a good follow-up and quick delivery. I am thrilled and will keep coming back.

by:

The products you offer are top rated. Dealing with your company is always satisfying. You are professional and efficient.

by:

The new tires and rims are an excellent fit for my Coleman camper. The spare tire cover is also from etrailer. Thanks for the quick shipping. I'm a happy camper.

by:

Great price, great quality and fast shi pping.

by:

Excellent delivery time. Quality product, very happy with your advice and my choice. Using on a 6x10 foot utility trailer

by:

Well I only pulled them out of the box today... and as long as they fit the 4 lug dimension of our 1972 Apache Ramada camper then we are good!! Love that new tire smell!

Super fast shipping, and immediate follow up from etrailer.com telling me that they had been delivered. That’s great customer service!

by:

Product was great. Exactly as I ordered. Shipped same day and was here in 3 days. Love the etrailer team they're amazing. Needed new tires on our 1990 jayco 1206 as the tires on it we're still original. Now we can camp this year and not worry about any blowouts.

by:

Perfect fit for my application on my travel trailer! Perfect upgrade to the original tires!

by:

Super fast shipping, well packaged

by:

Arrived early, went on Jayco camper no problem. Will be taking it on a 500 mile trip at the end of July hopefully they will work OK. Thanks for the good phone service.

by:

Excellent value for this product.
I will
order from etrailer again in the future.

by:

Could not be happier with my purchase on etrailer. Tires came the next day as promised properly aired and ready to go. Mounted them to the camper that night and headed out for camping the next day. Traveled both the back roads and highway. The ride was much better than the old tires I had on the camper. I will be replacing the spare tire soon with another purchase on etrailer.
I would highly recommend etrailer to anyone for their quality and customer service.

After one year tires are holding up very well. Camper rides great and no sign of excessive wear. Very happy

So far so good. Excellent customer service. Tires look great. I'll update after the first few trips.

by:

Very happy with my tire purchase. It was great having them pre-mounted! Extremely fast ship. About 36 hours once the item was back in stock. I’ll purchase tires from eTrailer again.

by:

Good price, fast delivery. So far they are working great.

by:

Needed upgrade for a pop top camper converted to a 4- wheeler trailer. Purchased spacers for the offset in the wheels. The load range on the new tire was just enough for the load I am hauling. The tires were used approximately 5,000 miles during hunting season, you can't tell they were ever on the road. Great tire, great price!!

by:

The wheel and rim was exactly what I needed. It replaced the original tires from my pop up trailer from 1990. Much better tire since this goes to my son who will take it on more rugged roads. Quick delivery.

  • Can A Torsion Axle Pop Up Trailer Be Lifted to Fit Larger Diameter Trailer Tires
You can use spacer blocks to get more ground clearance with torsion axles on trailers. If your axles are Dexter axles there are lift kits available. Typically, people use 2 inch by 3 inch, or 2 inch by 4 inch steel tubing with 3/16 or 1/4 inch wall thickness. This can throw off your trailer geometry as the trailer will now become more top heavy. You will need a new ball mount as well most likely. You will need one with less of a drop then what you currently have. To determine what rise/drop...

  • How to Determine if a Trailer Wheel is Centered on the Hub or Centered Using Lug Nuts
Having a larger pilot diameter (center hole) on a trailer wheel is only an issue if the wheels are centered onto the axle using the hub (a hub centric wheel). In this case you would need an exact fit. You know you have a hub centric wheel if your trailer uses wheel bolts to attach the wheel instead of lug nuts. If your trailer is lug centric meaning the wheel is centered on the axle using the lug nuts, then having a larger pilot hole on the wheel is not a problem. It would only be an issue...

  • Will Increasing Tire Size Decrease Trailer Hub Temperatures
The tire should have some heat in it from the friction with the pavement, but changing the tire size won't have an appreciable effect on the temperature of your hubs. How hot are your hubs getting? If they are too hot to touch, then there's very likely something wrong. Look for dragging brake shoes, or worn/damaged wheel bearings to be the cause of overheating hubs. Also check the spindles for nicks or discoloration. If the spindles are damaged, replacing the axle is usually easier and...

  • Larger Wheel/Tire Recommendation for 1997 Jayco Pop-Up Camper
We do indeed have wheel/tire combos that would provide a 175/80-13 inch tire on a white powder coated steel wheel with a 4 lug on 4 inch bolt circle. However, after closely examining the photo you kindly provided, I saw that you have what's referred to as a hub centric wheel. A hub centric wheel uses wheel bolts to fasten to the hub, not lug nuts. The wheel also gets a portion of its support from the portion of the hub protruding through the wheel. Because of this, you'll need a wheel...

  • Replacement Trailer Tires for a Coleman Pop-up Camper with 155R13 78S Tires
A 155-13 is not a common trailer tire size but the 78 makes me think it is a 78-13 which is an older designation and could be either a 175/80-13 or a 185/80-13. A 175/80-13 is going to be 6.6 inches wide and 24.1 inches tall. By comparison a 185/80-13 is going to be 7.2 inches wide and 24.4 inches tall. Both sizes fit on a 13 inch wheel that is 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 inches wide (inside width where the tire sits, not overall width). If your wheels are the right size you could mount either size...

  • Determining if Larger 13 Inch Wheels Can Be Used on Small Camper
Whether or not you will be able to easily swap out hubs to accommodate larger wheels (or be able to use larger wheels with the same hubs) will really depend on the type of axle the trailer is equipped with. When replacing the hubs on a trailer it is important to make sure the bearing numbers match up to what the spindles on the axle will accept. If you are looking at a particular trailer model I will be happy to try and research what type of axle and hubs it uses to see what might be...

  • Benefits of Changing to Larger Tire and Wheel on Kayak Trailer
There are a couple potential benefits to going with larger tires and wheels on your home built kayak trailer. The first is that a larger tire will likely raise your trailer a bit, resulting in better ground clearance when traveling. You will just want to make sure that you have the space available with your existing fenders and trailer frame for a larger size. Another potential benefit is that a larger tire and wheel will most likely have a larger load capacity. Keep in mind though...

The tire and wheel combos we carry like # AM3H460 are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

  • What Ply Tire Is Used On the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10 Inch White Wheel
The Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel part # AM3H460 has a 10 ply rating. If the lugs on your trailer hub are spaced 4" apart on center then the above will work for you so long as you also have space for the overall dimensions, 20.4" diameter x 8.4" wide. If you are just replacing the tires with the same size then this won't be an issue obliviously. The only other thing you need to be aware of is load capacity, 1,650 lbs per side (not directly rated to ply rating).
