Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Great looking tire and wheel …. Great for a spare on a long jet ski trailer trip

- AM3H490

These tires are stamped “Loadstar” but they are by Kenda. They are the exact match for my boat trailer’s OEM Loadstar tires. Tires were delivered 2-days earlier than promised via UPS. Another win for etrailer

- AM3H490

I bought this tire for a spare for my trailer. I have not needed to use it yet but it is nice to know I have a spare should the need arise. I found etrailer a very good place to order trailer tires. Prices are very competitive and shipping is always prompt. The web site with the videos is very informative for anything you are looking for.

My initial review stands. Not had a flat tire so I have not needed my spare. Like I working with etrailer. Great customer service and knowledgeable tech support.

This tire/wheel was exactly as I expected. Excellent quality and a perfect match to my wheels on my new trailer. I purchased the "Extra Offset Trailer Spare Tire Carrier by Dutton-Lainson" from etrailer to mount on my aluminum 2-craft PWC trailer.

- AM3H490
by:

Very good quality. Round trip made exceeding 2000 miles at speeds of up to 80 mph and the tires handled it well. Load on trailer was around 800 lbs.

You have provided not only an excellent product but an excellent service as well , thanks for your business.

- AM3H490

The quality looked good upon receipt. I purchased the galvanized wheels for a snowmobile trailer that sees a lot of salty conditions when it travels. I got tired of the painted rims that came with the trailer which became a rusty mess and were bound to start leaking. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the tire wear since the pandemic shut down all my trips for the past year.

we never had a spare tire for our boat trailer. This new tire arrived two days before the expected delivery date and it is just what we were looking for. Thank-you.

I’ll never use any other outlet for trailer wheels and tires again. ETRAILER goes above and beyond with their product detail descriptions. Their response times on questions and support are very impressive. I have no doubt that the wheels and tires I purchased will provide years of reliable service. Very happy with how my order was packaged for shipment. Other retailers take notes, etrailer has it going on!!

Ordered a spare Tire for the boat trailer. Came ahead of time and in perfect condition, Couldn't be happier!

In January 2022 we shopped at least a dozen online and local tire dealers. No one would even take our order for 205/65-10E tires on galv rims. etrailer took order but with a discouraging estimated delivery date August 31, 2022. We received the tires/rims Feb 3, 2022. Delighted. One little thing, a valve core leaked. Had to replace it, 50 cents. etrailer never dissapoints.

These trailer tires/wheel assemblies are just what I was looking for. They are excellent quality and were shipped quickly. Thank you etrailer!

I've purchased several things over the years with Etrailer and my overall experience Has been nothing but positive.. They always have unbeatable prices on pretty much everything they sell and their communication from the time you purchase your item right down to the delivery day.. They follow through 100%.. wish more companies were like them.. Will definitely purchase from them again.

by:

Order was delivered quickly. Quality set. I’m a satisfied customer and will be back when I need more wheels.

- AM3H490
by:

Tires and rims were in good shape when I received them. I took them to get ballenced and they said because of the 2 piece rim they couldn't ballance them because the thought the weight it called for was too much for such a little rim and tire; called for more weight than the 16" tires on my truck. I was a little dissapointed on this. I like a good ballanced tire on my trailers so they pull down the road nicely. Overall tires and rims in good shape, have not had them long enough to know if they will be good pulling down the road or not yet.

- AM3H490
by:

This is my second experience ordering from etrailer and both have been great experiences. The order was processed quickly and efficiently and was delivered before the original promised date. I haven’t seen the order but have no doubt it is exactly what I ordered. Great Customer Service

- AM3H490
by:

So happy with my purchase! The best part to me was the customer service. I didn’t just make a purchase and that was the end of it. I continued to receive follow ups and updates from the time I placed the order until I received it. Very commendable and I highly recommend etrailer!

I'm very happy with my purchase. I used expedited delivery and my trailer tires arrived on time. It only took a few minutes to get me back up and going again.

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • What PSI Is Needed For Load Range E Tires On Trailer Carrying Pontoon Boat
You will want to check your tire and it will have the maximum psi listed. I have attached a helpful article that lists what the tire size listings were, and what is used now. For example, if you look at the chart on the attached article it has a tire with the same dimensions you mentioned you have. The next column lists the tire size that is used now. You can see that for the load range E tire we carry, the maximum psi for the 205/65-10 is 90 psi. At the maximum air pressure, the tires...

  • Would the Kenda 205/65-10 Tire with 10" Wheel # AM3H490 be a Good Upgrade for 5.70-8 Tires
To determine if your trailer would be compatible with the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel # AM3H490 you will need to compare the dimensions of this tire and wheel to your trailer to see if you have enough clearance. This tire is 20.5 centimeter wide with an overall height of 20.5 inches. The wheel has a bolt pattern of 5 on 4-1/2 inches. You will need to determine the bolt pattern of the hubs on your trailer currently. I attached an FAQ on how to do this.

  • How Do Determine if the Wheel and Tire Combo # AM3H490 Would Clear the Frame of a Trailer
The section width of the tire on the # AM3H490 that you referenced is actually 8.4 inches. To determine if this setup would clear your trailer you will need to take half of this width (4.2 inches) and compare that to the distance from the hub face on the axle to the closest portion of your trailer that would cause interference. If this measures more than 4.2 inches then this setup would have enough clearance from a wideness point of view. The outer diameter of the wheel is 20.4 inches.

The 20.5 x 8 x 10 trailer tire is an older tire size that is closely related to the newer tire like part # AM3H490. The 205/65-10 tire size is considered a direct replacement for the 20.5 x 8 x 10 tire. To calculate the revolutions that any tire will make in a given distance you need to do some calculations. First, calculate the number of inches in the distance that the tire will be required to roll. In this case 63,360 inches makes 1 mile. Next, calculate the circumference by multiplying...

  • Should the Original Wheels and Spare Tire Be Replaced on a 1989 Jayco King 6 Pop Up Trailer
I would definitely recommend replacing your spare tire if it is the original spare tire from 1989. Trailer tires typically need to be changed every 6 years or when worn, so I would bet that your spare tire is in no shape to help support your trailer. Even though a tire might not be worn, dry rot will weaken the tire tread and sidewall overtime leading to tire failure. The wheels on the other hand only need to be replaced if they have been damaged. I would recommend inspecting each wheel...

Yes, the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10 inch Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range E, item # AM3H490, is a a good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tire. The load range is the same, both are bias ply tires and they are the same overall size. The 205/65-10 tire is the modern equivalent of the 20.5x8x10 tire. You need to be sure that your trailer wheel bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2 inches. We have an FAQ article on measuring wheel bolt pattern for you to review (see link).
