Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

On the advice of Etrailer techs, I ordered this bigger size tire and wheel combination to match up to the existing trailer hub and lug bolt pattern and size. The techs said this combination would fit my hub and still fit under the fender. They were exactly right. Now I have an M speed rated 13" tire for up to 81 mph. Just what I need for my western state interstate speed limit. Very well done Etrailer!

Tires and wheels for sailboat trailerJust bought two tires St1175/80d13 tires with white wheels mounted.( 5 on 4.5 )
The tires that I had were left out in the Chicago winters and had cracks in the sidewalls so they were becoming unsafe to tow anywhere. I called many places for tires and was told how hard to find A78-13 and that the cost was way up there. Then I went on the internet and found etrailer and talked to Cristy who is part of your sale staff. She took away all my fears and took me by the hand thru your catalog and found the tires I needed and at a great price also. After talking to her I felt that a big weight had just been lifted off my back and I could see daylight at the end of the tunnel.
You should be commended that you have such a fine person working on your behalf and who knows how to handle confused customers over the phone.
I could feel that she was on my side and not just another sales person.
The order was shipped the next morning and came to me by UPS on time . My wife and I were able to go sailing for the first time in years and I can't thank you all enough for the great service. Enclosed are two photos taken of my boat & trailer with it's new and safe tires. You made it easy, thanks!

I decided to upgrade my boat trailer tire/wheel size from 12" to 13" and am very satisfied with the online ordering experience and delivery of the new tires and wheels - Thanks!

I had not used E trailer before and was somewhat afraid to to start with 2 tires. but the tires arrived in record time, I got several communications from E trailer regarding the progress of my order and I couldn't be more satisfied. The website info was very good and the tires are exactly what I expected at a great price. This is a great company to do business with.

tires were the right price and perfect size for my homebuilt kayak trailer

I see too many boat trailers on the side of the road with flat tires. Now I'm prepared! This is my second order from etrailer. No problems so far - easy ordering process, quality products, quick shipping.

It's a spare tire. I won't know much about until if and when I have to use it!

Product was exactly as described. 100% satisfied. The info provided on the etrailer website was helpful in making my product selection. Of course the price was good and the tire/wheel combo was shipped to my door for free.

Thank you for following up. All the products I bought are still working well and I am 100 satisfied. I still use them all except the tirewheel which is no fault of the product, I bought it as a spare for my trailer and knock on wood have never had to use it.

I looked around and etrailer had the best options, selection, and prices. The shipping was fast and I am impressed. I've ordered from them before and will keep them at the top of my list in the future. I went to this tire to upgrade from a 12" tire. I'm sure these new tires will work very well for my future fishing trips.

I open 1 box and the wheel and tire looks very nice and they where even mounted. Very pleased if the other box is as nice as the first one. I have bought a lot of items on line but this was the quickest shipping I've ever encountered . Thanks

Very efficient business with top notch people. Orders are always delivered fast and the products are just as described with good quality.

The wheel and tire are as expected and work as they should. The etrailer website and customer service are personal and amazing! Quick, easy, courteous. Even better than the "Good old days" we all remember! Thanks.

Haven't put the tires on yet, but I am super pleased with etrailer's service. The trailer rim and tire combo shipped fast and arrived on time. It was crucial that they arrive on time as I need to install them and hit the road in a couple days. Tires are mint and the rims are very clean. Can't wait to see that they look like mounted. Will continue to use etrailer for all my boat trailer needs.

I wanted to put larger wheels/tires on a small utility trailer I have and asked for advice. They advised this product so I bought it. I was in no hurry but they shipped it very quickly and I received it and installed them last weekend. They were the perfect size and accomplished exactly what I wanted.

Everything it said it was. Pinstriping matched the other rim even though it was over20 years old

The tires that I needed were the fairest price that I could find for already being on the rim. I am quite pleased with the delivery time and for how smooth the transaction went. I plane to use etrailer next time I’m in need of tires.

I discovered etrailer on the internet and quickly found what I was searching for at a very attractive price. The ordering process is easy, quick and great shipping options and price. I was very pleased to be notified that my shipping option was upgraded at no additional cost and even better was that my order arrived 1 day sooner than expected. All around Great Experience and Value. Well Done etrailer corporation!!!!'

Product was exactly as advertised. It was very easy to navigate the website to determine which tires fit my trailers. I purchased 2 different tires. They shipped very quickly to my door. Great transaction. Thank you

Once again I'm so pleased with the service from etrailer. Delivery was a day early which made my weekend plans a lot less stressed! Tires look great.

Dont usually order via the internet. Pics on website helped to select the correct products. Placing order was very easy. etrailer emails you every step of the way with info on your shipping. Products came in good shape, on time with no issues. Was overall very pleased with the service. I would shop here again.

Website was very easy to navigate and find what you are looking for. Products competitively priced and my order was delivered on time. I will definitely buy from this website again for all my trailer needs.

Tire and wheel was as expected.

A very good tire and rim at a very good price...

  • Spare Wheel and Tire Recommendation for Trailer with Tire Size ST175/80R13
For a 5 lug wheel with the tire size ST175/80R13 what we know will work as a replacement is the part # AM3S050. This matches the tire size and also the 5 bolt pattern you have which would be 5 on 4-1/2 inch.

  • Can a B78-13ST Tire and an ST175/80-13 Tire be Used at the Same Time on a Trailer
Tire size ST175/80D13 is the metric equivalent of a B78-13ST so you technically could have both sizes on the trailer at the same time. However, if the tires have different load ranges that would mean they also have different ply ratings. The ply rating difference and the tread pattern difference can lead to uneven tire wear and tracking problems. Ideally you will want to have all tires on the trailer the same. I have included a link to the ST175/80-13 tires that we carry.

  • Recommended Trailer Tire/Wheel to Provide Smoothest Ride Quality for Delicate Cargo
There will not be much difference in ride smoothness between a fully-inflated 35-psi rated tire and a fully-inflated 90-psi rated tire, but typically a radial will give a slightly smoother ride than a bias ply tire since it has a more flexible sidewall. Any trailer tire, whether a bias ply or radial, and regardless of its load rating, will deliver its full rated weight carrying capacity only when inflated to the full tire pressure noted on its side wall. Since most customers are looking...

  • Will the ST175/80D13 Tire Replace B78-13ST Tires on a Coleman Pop-Up Camper
Yes, the Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13 tire is the equivalent to the B78-13 tires on your Coleman pop-up camper. To determine if the wheel will work, you will want to make sure the bolt pattern on this wheel matches the bolt pattern on your hub. This wheel has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. If you measure the distance between the center of one bolt on the hub or bolt hole on your current wheel to the center of the adjacent bolt (trailer) or bolt hole (wheel) and it measures 2-5/8 inches, then...

  • Replacing Existing 4.80x12 Tires with 175/80-13 Tires on Small Utility Trailer
You can certainly go with a larger wheel/tire combo, like the # AM3S050. This is a 175/80-13 tire on a white spoke wheel, which is about 3.5 inches taller and around 2 inches wider than your existing tires. Because we're talking a circular object, the tire will be moved about 1-3/4 inches closer to the fender and about 1 inch closer to the trailer frame. As long as you have enough clearance above for the fenders and to the inside to clear the trailer frame, they should work just fine for...
