Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Nice looking tires and wheels.

by:

Mike was super helpful about guiding me the correct tire/wheel size a making sure I had the correct hub size to match.

by:

They are on my trailer but have not used it yet looking forward though

by:

They processed and shipped the order lightening fast and on a Sunday evening! Check them out if you have any trailer or camper needs.

by:

I ordered these for my 1997 Jayco 1207 KB popup camper. I ordered item K71-723-01 to provide extra clearance for the tires. Everything shipped quickly! I ordered three of these tires and wheels. They are all great and fit perfectly.

by:

Fit and finish were excellent. I couldn't find this ture and wheel size with this bolt pattern anywhere else. Shipping was one day faster that predicted and the item arrived boxed and in perfect condition.

by:

Nice tires

by:

These wheels and tires still look new after a year. The trailer does not get moved often, but just the same, I am confident all will be well when I do move it.

by:

A great business to order parts from. Melissa T is fantastic as well

by:

Order arrived on time and was exactly what I wanted.

by:

Incredibly good product and price. Excellent service.

by:

Went up from 12" to 13" wheels and decided on these because of their speed rating (M 81 mph). Perfect fit onto existing hubs. 2500 miles from Florida to Nova Scotia, Canada at mostly 65 mph. No problems. Tires did not get excessively hot, could always touch with full palm.
Fast delivery from e-trailer.

by:

They have great tires for our small trailer. So good have not gives them a second thought.

by:

I bought this for a spare for my trailer, I haven’t used it yet and I hope that I never will. The pilot diameter hole is 1/8” bigger than I wanted, but it was the closest one that I could find. Thank you for waiting one year before asking me for a review, this makes much more sense. For above reasons, I can’t give you an excellent rating, but for the price, I think it’s great!

by:

Seem great so far! Bought them for a camper I built. Was planning on going from Indiana to Yellowstone last summer with them. But then COVID hit and National Parks closed. We have done some more local trips of 25-100 miles and worked great so far.

by:

Doing a DIY lift on my ancient Jayco pop up trailer to accommodate larger tires with a higher speed rating. Tires arrived very well packed and in perfect condition, very happy with them!

Its a year later and these tires are still going strong. Multiple camping trips with the now lifted popup under our belt and these tires have made pulling the trailer at highway speeds a breeze. The larger diameter combined with the axle lift also means getting the trailer into the back country is easier. Highly recommend these tires if youre doing a lift on your popup!

by:

I was very pleased with the tire ordering process, it was easy to understand. The tires were shipped and received in a timely manner. My only concern is with the age of the tires. The tires were mfg. 51 of 17 since it is now 5 of 19 the tires are already 17 months old. Your website recommends a life expectancy of trailer tires to be 7 years that would be 84 months. So the tires I got have already gone through 20% of their life expectancy. My reference number is107755102

Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or more before we received them. These tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they can sit in a warehouse for months until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can take a month or even more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years, assuming theyre not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The product warranty begins at the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture.

by:

These tires are fantastic after 1 year and 2600 miles the tires still look brand new. I believe that these tires will last another year and 2600 more miles. For the last 15 years I have been getting around 1200 miles out of a set of tires, I love to fish so my trailer goes everywhere. yes I will buy these again.

the tires still look new and have 4100 miles on them fantastic

by:

Put LoadStar tires and wheels on my 32 foot sailplane trailer last year. Currently have about 1600 miles of combined highway and off-road on them with no problems. So far they have held up better than other tires I have tried in the past., Stable trailer handling. negligible air loss, and no sidewall checking in desert conditions. I'm happy

  • Availability of Wheel and Tire to Replace B78-13 that Has 4 Bolt Mounting Pattern
B78-13 is an old tire size designation that isn't used much anymore. The modern trailer tire equivalent size is ST175/80-13. For that tire size mounted on a 4 bolt wheel you would want the part # AM3S120.

Yes, the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel - 4 on 4 # AM3S120 has an 81 mph speed rating and will work well for highway use. In regards to the bearings, you'll need to inspect them and if they are in good condtion they do not need to be replaced.

  • Can you Replace 15 Inch Trailer Wheels and Tires With Smaller 13 Inch Wheels and Tires?
There are still a couple issues to consider when moving from a 15" wheel to a 13" wheel on your trailer. First you will need to ensure the smaller wheels will fit on your hub. If you know what hub you have you can verify it is rated for your size wheels. Otherwise you will need to measure the pilot hole size for the hub and if it is a braking hub you will need to measure to ensure the diameter of the brake drum will fit inside the smaller wheel. Also you will need to verify your trailer...

  • Why Are Wheel Pilot Hole Measurements Taken in Decimals and Not Fractions.
The wheel pilot hole will only matter if A) the wheel centers on the hub and uses wheel bolts, nut lug nuts, to secure to the hub or B) if the hole is too small on a hub that uses lug nuts. If your wheels secure to the hub using lug nuts then the pilot hole can be larger than the part of the hub it fits on. Why we use decimals and not fractions is because when a wheel does install with wheel bolts, the pilot hole has to be exact. Fractions are not accurate enough and someone can easily...

  • Wheel Bolts and Lug Centric Wheel Installation
If the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel # AM3S120 is most commonly centered on the hub using the lug studs and lug nuts then there is no issue with the pilot hole diameter as long as it fits over the hub. The wheel will fit the hub and won't wander because it is held firmly in place at the 4 hole locations. It is very similar for the wheel bolts you referenced. The wheel bolts when started and tightened evenly will also allow you center the wheel using the...

  • How to Determine if a Trailer has a 13 inch Rim with a 4 on 4 inch Bolt Pattern
It sounds like you have a bolt pattern of 4 on 4 inch, but the dimension you listed is slightly off from what this bolt pattern is. What you will want to do is measure from one hole center straight across to the hole center opposite of it. If this dimension is right at 4 inches then you do have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern and all of the rims at the attached link will fit.

We don't carry the specific brand rim and tire you are looking for. • Largest Wheel/Tire For a Trailer Hub with 4 on 4 Inch Bolt Pattern
The largest tire/wheel combo you can use on a trailer hub with 4 on 4" bolt pattern is a 175/80-13 like the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel part # AM3S120 you were looking at. The reason for this is because the hub face on a trailer hub with 4 on 4" bolt pattern is not large enough to properly support a wheel larger than 13" diameter. We do carry 13 inch wheels with a 4 hole bolt pattern, but there are a few other factors that we will need to look at to make sure we can get you a wheel that will work with your trailer. First, we carry two different 4 hole bolt patterns for a 13 inch wheel. The bolt patterns are 4 on 4 inches and 4 on 9.44. This tire will be slightly larger at 5/8" taller and 5/16" wider, but this is close enough that you should have no fitment issues. • Is Going to a Bigger Trailer Tire Than Stock Recommended
If you arent overloading your current wheel/tire combo then I wouldnt necessarily recommend going with a different setup. If you have the clearance for a larger setup then it technically would work, as long as the motives for going to a different setup is not to try and carry more weight than the trailer is rated for. A larger tire might build less heat, but if you are within capacity for the wheels and tires this shouldnt be an issue. Higher rated wheels and tires will not increase the...

Since your current trailer tire size starts with the letter P that means it's a vehicle tire and shouldn't be used on a trailer. You'd want a trailer tire size that starts with ST like the # AM3S120 which is a tire size ST175/80D13. There isn't a larger size with a 4 lug bolt pattern so this would be your best option.
