Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I ordered tire and wheels for my trailer. The wheels existing on the trailer were 4 bolt patter from a 1965 Ford Falcon. The tires and wheels were fine except the bolt pattern did not line up. I can not use these and was told by someone at Your company to measure the bolt pattern which I can do. I certainly don’t need 4 tires, the tires are fine. It’s the wheels that don’t fit. I should not have to send measurements if your company had sent wheel for the specific car I mentioned. I know these to be correct because I took them off that car that had been in the family since new. I did measure as well as I could centerline to center line and measured 3 and 1/4 inches. I don’t think that’s the best way to order wheels because there are so many iteration close but just off a bit. But I’d like to have wheels that fit. Right now I have a nice set of wheels and tires from you which I can’t use.

I have attached a help article with the easiest way to measure bolt pattern. I do want to point out that etrailer only sells trailer tires and wheels. These are not recommended for vehicles of any kind.

Thanks for your follow-up. Attached is a photo of the new wheels/tires mounted on my trailer. The 35+ year old girl hasn't looked that good in a long time. Can't wait to tow something and not have to pump air in the leaking rims before hitting the road. Thanks for the excellent product line and fast service.

The Kenda tires are not working out as expected. One has developed a slow leak, with no obvious damage to the tire, such as nail or puncture. I havent had a chance to water tank test it to see if the problem is the valve, bead, wheel, or tire.Have you had any other similar problems reported with Kenda tires that would indicate where to focus?
Rick R - 06/24/2015

Thanks for the follow up Rick, we have not heard of any issues specific to these tires. I think the water tank test sounds like the best way to figure out where the slow leak is. Thanks for your feedback.

I've order from [online resale] and [online vendor] exstensivly, but etrailer continues to beat them both! Great products and ultra fast delivery on my orders. A winning combanation and if you have an issue, you are dealing direct with "the company" that cares.

- AM3S130

Everything was great from start to finish. The only exception was the rim is bent on the tire I received. It appears this was done in mounting. It is going on my fishing boat trailer so no big deal to me. Might be for someone else. Will need to order another one soon and will definitely purchase from etrailer.

Product is exactly what I needed and ordered. They are honest and true about there products and shipping . I will most definitely refer them to a friend .

- AM3S130

Wheels and tires look great. Too soon to tell whether the boat when fully loaded will bring the top of the tire too close to the bottom of the fender, but there appears to be plenty of room to accommodate that as Conner L had predicted. The increased load rating on the tires should now be sufficient to carry the fully loaded boat and trailer. New issue (that I should have foreseen) is that with the increased height at the axle, the trailer is no longer level and I had to order a ball mount with a taller rise. If I had thought ahead and ordered it with the wheels, I could have saved the shipping costs. No big deal. The price for the ball mount was still competitive even with the shipping charge.

I live in a fairly rural community in IL. I have a little 4'×8' trailer I could not find tires for anywhere. Even my tire hoarding contacts didn't have any. The obsolete tire was a 155 R13 78S. I went to 4 local stores and only 1 had a 13 inch tire and only 1 in stock. Because there would have been a size difference I was going to need 2 tires. The price without tax was 79.00 for each tire. They had one 13 inch tire on a rim in stock, however it was a 5 bolt and I needed a 4 bolt. My store couldn't even order them. So I turned to the internet and found etrailer. I found these AM3S130 tires on rims with a 4 bolt pattern. I was hoping they'd fit under my fenders, but they were my only option I found in my hunt. I figured if they were too tall I'd just have the fenders removed and welded back on at a higher height. I was ecstatic to see free shipping for my order over $100. Shipping was fast and the tires were perfect fit! I'm ready to mow yards and hit the auctions again. Well, if the State of IL ever opens up again. Thank you etrailer!

- AM3S130

I purchased these tires for my boat trailer. I trailer my boat approx. 1200 miles to Canada to go fishing. The shipping was quick, communications were good and the product was as described. They were easy to order using the instructions and diagrams provided on their website for the bolt pattern. They fit perfectly and I will order from etrailer again.

- AM3S130

Tires and wheels look and fit like a glove. That is after I lifted the trailer 3.5 inches.I knew I had to before ordering. Went from 8 inch wheels to 13 inch. Very happy with product.

- AM3S130

Fast delivery, easy to use website. Product is exactly what I was looking for.

- AM3S130

Thank you for the followup. I am a very satisfied customer! The tires and wheels fit perfectly on my two wheel tilt bed mower utility trailer. I know I can depend on the trailer to safely transport my zero turn mower. I am very pleased with the purchase.

- AM3S130

good products and nice people

- AM3S130

I needed rims and tires for a bunch of toilet trailers. I got these for what I would've paid for tires alone.

- AM3S130

Prompt delivery. Excellent tire and rim. Making a BBQ trailer and it looks good.

- AM3S130

Great Product....Fast Shipping...Well made !!

- AM3S130

Easy purchase and delivery to me. Only problem was one of the wheels is warped giving the tire a noticeable wobble. I didn't want to go through shipping it back so I live with it.

Sure, you can go from 12 inch to 13 inch wheels and tires on your boat trailer that has 4-bolt hubs.
