Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Tires arrived on time. Rims have a fairly rough finish to them with some marks from machining. However, I guess for the price point they’re not terrible. First time I took the boat out of the garage with the new tires on, I had a problem. On the way back home on the freeway I had a blow out with one of these tires. I put the spare on, and it seems fine, along with the tire that didn’t blow out. I guess things happen, but that’s not the reason for my low rating. When tire shopping, I saw lots of talk about great customer service from etrailer. When my tires were delivered, I received a welcome email. However, when I emailed them using the address they provided asking them if there was any kind of road hazard warranty on their tires as these were brand new, no response. If the answer is no, it’s no. Or if there’s some type of discount when replacing a new tire in these situations that they offer, but to receive no response, that’s simply not anything but 1 star customer service.

The tires/arrived on time and looked great. I was a little disappointed to discover the max weight capability of the wheel was slightly less than Load Range D which was the main reason I bought the tires to replace the Load Range C tires/wheels on my boat trailer. Minor issue though, thanks for your help!

Ive pulled my boat trailer with these wheels about 500 miles with no problems, they held pressure well while in storage over the winter. still very pleased with them.

I needed to replace the wheels and tires on my Karavan trailer. These are exactly what I needed. Fairly priced and shipped quickly. Packaged in heavy duty cardboard boxes.

by:

Delivery was quick and the tire and wheel matched exactly the ones on my Karavan boat trailer. Second time using etrailer, both positive.

Gosh, thats frustrating. I am sorry to hear that. I will see what i can do about getting a replacement sent to you!

by:

Tires and rims arrived a couple days earlier than expected. I am very happy with the products and pleased with the appearance of the galvanized rims.
I also made a separate order on plastic fenders of which I'm very happy with.

Both orders were packaged well and had no damage upon arrival.

The 13” Loadstar galvanized wheels and tires fit my 2004 Fisher Prohawk trailer perfect. I’m very happy with my purchase.

by:

Excellent fit on my 2012 Venture boat trailer. Time will tell how tires perform, so far so good.

by:

I recieved two of these tires yesterday. Grrat looking tires and wheels. I have a reatively new galvanized spare on the trailer but these new wheels have a much better shine to them. They were delivered very fast

by:

Ordered the tires on a Sunday night and even with regular shipping they were at my house Tuesday. I bought them to replace a pair of trailer tires purchased locally- nearly identical price, but both the tires and the wheels are of MUCH higher quality materials. I was emailed the next day to make sure the order had arrived and that I was satisfied with everything. Customer service has been great- will definitely use etrailer again!

by:

Exactly what I wanted. 2 new tires and rims for my 2014 Yamaha SX190 boat trailer. Had the tires balanced at the local tire shop we use for our cars real cheap ??. One was "typical" out of balance the other was more so. I won't complain. They are now balanced. I'm using the old ones as spares since this trailer doesn't have spares. Good to know my F150 jack and wrench work perfectly on the trailer so no extras needed. I will definitely use etrailer again if the need arises. They are great.

by:

I thought the tire was great, just have as a spare. However the rim I received was a used rim with damage and was clearly spray painted

by:

Over $100 cheaper than les shwab for the same tire and rim combo..fast shipping. Excellent transaction all around!

by:

Great price, quality tire and rim with fast shipping from etrailer. After internet search at many sites, etrailer offered the best price and tire I needed as a spare for my boat trailer. Also received a very nice sturdy Fulton tire mount. Received order extremely fast within 2 days. Very pleased and would definitely order again.

by:

fast shipping well packaged only took 30 minutes to take the old tires off and put the new one on Bingo so easy

by:

Perfect fit for my trailer.

by:

I have to say the customer service and inventory selection is great. But with my last order of this trailer wheel and tire the finish on this wheel is less than to be desired . It looks like what ever process went into galvanizing the rim the Quality control was lacking . Other than that I have no issues with etrailer and for sure will order more in the future when need be

by:

Fast turn around time and easy process the entire way.

It's been a year since these tires and rims have been installed. They've held up great with just under 7k miles. Thank you etrailer!

by:

This is the perfect replacement for my boat trailer tires. I was very pleased with the customer service help with my order.

by:

Tires and rims were exactly what I ordered, rims look nice, chrome finish. Tires are good quality. Will work great on pontoon boat trailer. Arrived earlier than described. Took 3 days from order to arrive at my home. Thank you

by:

Could not be more pleased. Needed a basic spare tire set up for a jet ski trailer and received the items in less than a week. GREAT on- line experience and will now be shopping here for all future trailer needs.

by:

etrailer popped up on my searcj for a 13 inch load range D tire and also a galvanized wheel. The wheel tire combo was a great deal and free shipping. i received it in about three days and it was exactly what I was looking for. i haven;t tried it out yet but have no reason to doubt it will meet my needs.

After a year I still think it was a good product and a good deal. Very satisfied.

by:

Tires with rims arrived today and look great. PSI was even correct right out of the box. Won’t be using the boat/trailer until this weekend but I have a lot more confidence now that I won’t have a blowout.

by:

Quick delivery and looks like a good product ( haven’t driven on them yet) thank you!

  • Replacement Tire and Wheel Recommendation for 185/80-13 Tires on a Dual Axle Boat Trailer
The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM31994 will work if the 1,610 lbs at 65 psi weight rating (per tire) is enough for your boat and trailer. This gives you a total weight capacity of 6,440 lbs. If you need a bit more then we actually do have 185/80-13 size tires so something like the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM3S334 would give you a slightly higher weight capacity at 1,710 lbs at 65 psi (for a total of 6,840...

If your tires weren't inflated to 65 psi cold prior to the trip that would also have an impact. This is a great tire and wheel so 7 years likely has taken a toll as well. The tire has a width of 7.2 inches and an outer diameter of 24.4 inches so if looking to upgrade size you will want...

Thanks for all of the information! The products you were looking at are all compatible. Superior heat management and heat dissipation. 3. Excellent tire flexibility and road surface interaction. 4. Superior handling. 5. Lower rolling resistance. Compared to some bias ply tires benefits: 1. Less complicated tire construction and, therefore, typically lower cost. 2. The stiffer sidewall can be...

The 185/80-13 is a great trailer tire option. It measures 24.4" diameter x 7.2" wide so as long as you have clearance for this new size it will work well. We recommend at least 3" from the fender and 1" from the frame. • Why Do Bias Ply and Radial Trailer Tires of the Same Size have Different Measurements
It is not recommended to tow a trailer that has two different tire types on it. It will affect the handling and ride of the trailer since radial tires track better. Any two tires of the same size from different manufacturers will have slightly different measurements. This is do to differences in manufacturing processes, tread type and wear, and amount of air pressure in the tires. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. Yes, as long as the spare tire is the same size, load range (weight rating) and has the matching wheel bolt pattern you can use a bias ply spare to replace a radial main tire for the short distance you'll travel to get the radial repaired or replaced. For example, the 5-on-4-1/2 bias ply # AM31233 can be used as a spare to replace radial # AM31994. You do not want to run the trailer with mixed tires for any substantial distance but to get you to a repair shop it is fine.
