Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Mount and go!

The tire is a replacement for the original manufacturer's tire on a Hallmark Trailer.
Size was as expected, worked "out of the box" if you will, used the pair as soon as they were both installed.

etrailer was helpful in recovering from an incorrect order on my part and a subsequent partial incorrect shipment on theirs. After a lot of email back-and-forth and 1 phone call with support, I was sent a second 5 x 4 1/2 that was correct for the trailer. etrailer paid for the incorrect tire returns.

I purchased 4 mounted tires on rims. They arrived quickly, were exactly as advertised, and worked fine. These were to replace the 4 old original tires/rims that came with my trailer. I only use the trailer a few times per year, but I tow a Kubota tractor on the highway and wanted a good quality tire. Very satisfied with every purchase from

The tires and rims arrived in a timely fashion, no problems with installation. Really impressed with the way the tires were shipped. Hope to enjoy many miles of use with these tires!

Product came quicker than expected. Showed up, the right tire and rim size as well! Just like it should be

Great looking wheels and tires. etrailer delivered on time along with UPS. I will order again for my trailer needs.

Hope you don’t have to return anything to this company because their return shipping is outrageous!

So far so good. No issues.

They arrived much sooner than expected. This makes 10 tires and rims we have purchased from you and service has been great. I liked the price on the last four better but because of inflation I understand the increase. Maybe in four more years when I need more tires the price will be back to normal.

The dump trailer is used very little but the rims still look new as well as the tires. They hold air well.

Fast shipping, more competitive pricing than my local tractor supply store! Will continue to do business with etrailer!

It took me two try's to the get the right tire but have been happy with the tire for my trailer.

eTrailer typically provides good service and products. These were another addition to the products and service I have come to expect from this vendor.

You guys are the best ever. My grooming trailer is lookin fresh now!

bought as spare for motorcycle trailer. fortunately haven't had to use it.

Great tires, and wheels for the money. They hold air pressure great, and ware evenly.

Just came off the UPS TRUCK! OUT the box fully pumped up. Currently waiting on tire mount (from Amazon) to come in.

This is an excellent company. I got exactly the tire and wheel I needed for a great price. The order was packed and shipped on the Saturday afternoon I placed my order. Wow!* They met or exceeded all of my expectations.

Product was promised by a certain date and arrived by that date. The link to track my order was very helpful. Will definitely recommend to others.

Tires have performed like a champ,no problems at all. Definitely made the right decision to purchase these.

@Charles We're glad to hear that!

Ordered on Thursday, shipped same day arrived Saturday equals great service. Have not used tire and wheel as it’s main purpose is as a spare but it looks great and of good quality

I appreciate the fast delivery and reasonable pricing.

I am from Columbus, Ohio and was happy to deal with "etrailer" for out 20ft flatbed. The trailer has been great and the purchase went very smoothly.
Will for sure consider "etrailer" in the future for another when needed.

Exactly what I ordered on time

Arrived earlier than expected & was packaged very well.

The tire with wheel appears to be of excellent quality and is exactly as advertised. I am always impressed with etrailer's explanation of their products and their exceptional customer service. I will keep coming back.

The tirewheel combo went on my homemade tear camper. They carried the camper on a 6000 miles trek across the country and back without any issues. They provided a smooth ride on-road and performed flawlessly in off-road situations. I am very pleased.

Great tires and wheels! Great site to order from and fast free shipping!

Shipping was fast, tires are perfect, and the tread is wonderful! 100% satisfied with this purchase

  • Can I Use the AM3S640DX to Replace 7.75 x 15 Trailer Tires
Yes. The # AM3S640DX would be a good choice to replace the 7.75 x 15 tires on your 1976 Prowler trailer. This tire/wheel combo has an 1860-lbs per tire capacity, so you'll be well over the 4000-lbs GVWR of the trailer and for the 7.75 x15 tire size you mentioned, the ST205/75D15 tire is the closest modern tire size. Since this is a tire/wheel combo, I do recommend making sure that your trailer has hubs with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern so that the wheels are compatible. If you find that...

  • Does the Loadstar Tire and Wheel Combination # AM3S640DX Come Balanced?
All of our combination tire and wheels like the Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire w/ 15" White Spoke Wheel # AM3S640DX come ready to install. They are balanced in the way trailer tires are balanced which is different than the vehicle tire balancing process that includes adding weights. There is a high (heavy) spot and low (light) spot marked on the tire and then the manufacturer ensures the high/heavy spot of the tire is aligned with the wheel valve stem hole. This is all that is...

  • What Does the 75D Mean in a Trailer Tire Size ST205/75D15
In a tire size the second number is the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is the percentage of the sidewall height relative to the width of the tire. The width is the first number; in this case for # AM3S640DX the width is 205 mm. The sidewall is 75 percent of 205 mm. The D is indicating the tire is a bias ply tire as opposed to a radial tire. The difference is in the orientation of the plies or belts in the tires' construction. On a radial they run straight across the tire whereas in a...

The Dexter axle part # 35545I-ST-89 is a 3,500 lb trailer axle so for a leaf spring that would work well with that you'd want the # e45SR which is the same rating and is 25-1/8 inches long. Then for a tandem hanger kit you'd want the # AP233-H248 and the U-bolt kit part # CE23002.

  • Replacement Tire and Wheel for a 175/80/15 Size Tire With Wheel Bolt Pattern of 5 on 4-1/2
The least expensive tire/wheel combination to replace your ST175/80D15 Carlisle tires is the Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire w/ 15" White Spoke Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM3S640DX. This has a load range of C (1,820 lbs at 50 psi), has a max speed rating of 81 mph, and comes with a 5-year tire/1-year wheel limited warranty. While this is a cost-effective tire, you can still be confident that you're getting a quality product.

  • Availability of Trailer Tire Size 205/75-15 Mounted on White Mod Wheel
The small circles around the wheel like you described indicate that you have a mod style wheel. So for a wheel in that style that has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern with a bias-ply 205/75D15 mounted on it you'd want the part # TA47VR. The brand of tire on it is Taskmaster and it's a Load Range C like you need so it would work well.

  • Which Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System for On and Off Road Trailer?
Great question. The standard 2K system # ASR2KHDS01 is for standard highway driving only. The Heavy-Duty 2K system # ASR2KHDS02 will be compatible with wider tires for more of the combination use you are seeking. The # ASR1THDS01 listed for Off-Road Tires has suspension that is more robust for up to 2,200 lbs and has a longer arm for a smoother ride over a rougher terrain. For your application, I recommend # ASR2KHDS02. It will handle better for your fair bit of highway driving as...

  • Can Radial And Bias Ply Tires Be Mixed On A Trailer?
It is not recommended to mix bias ply and radial tires, so you would not want to use the Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire w/ 15" White Spoke Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM3S640DX to replace a flat ST205/75R15 tire. Bias ply and radial tires track and perform differently which can cause an unstable ride, and can wear tires quicker. This is a proven tire that is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.
