Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.
Determining the Bolt Pattern
The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.
To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)
On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)
Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

Today, we're gonna take a look at this Kenda Karrier ST205/75R14 radial trailer tire in a load range C, and it's mounted on this 14-inch Sendel Series T09 black machined aluminum trailer wheel, with the 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this tire wheel assembly is ideal for boat trailers, utility trailers, and campers. The wheel is a durable, corrosion-resistant Sendel Series T09 five-spoke aluminum wheel. You can see, it has a black finish, but then the machined finish on the face and the lip. The front and the back of the wheel are clear coated for excellent corrosion resistance.
A few dimensions on the wheel. The diameter is 14 inches. The width on just the wheel is 5 1/2 inches. The bolt pattern on this wheel is a 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. And if you wanna measure that on a wheel that's an odd number of lugs, what you need to do is pick any hole, let's say this lug hole, and then you're gonna measure across to either one of these lug holes.
But when you measure, it's from the center of the starting hole to the furthest edge of whatever hole you measure to. On this one, it'll measure four and a half inches. So that's a five-lug 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. If you notice, the wheel does not have a center cap. If you want a center cap, we do sell those separately.
You do wanna make sure to get a center cap that'll have the same diameter as this pilot hole. 'Cause when you install it, it'll go through this hole. The diameter on this pilot hole is 3.19 inches. The wheel does use a wheel lug size of a 1/2 inch by 20, and the weight capacity on just the wheel by itself is 2,200 pounds. Now, the tire that's mounted on it is a Kenda Karrier special trailer radial tire.
The special trailer tire design uses double steel belts, full nylon ply, which will combine for superior function and long life. They do use a silica-infused tread. And if you look on the blocks, they will have some cuts in them, and those are called sipes. That'll help reduce hydroplaning, gives you excellent handling off-pavement situations. The ST, which means it's a special trailer tire, has sturdy sidewalls so they can handle heavy loads. And it is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on other vehicles. The tire size, which will be stamped on the tire, ST for special trailer, 205/75R14. The R means that it is a radial tire. Section width on this is eight inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 26.3. And we mentioned the tire is a load range C, which means it's a six-ply-rated tire. The maximum load capacity on that is 1,925 pounds at 60 PSI. This assembly does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation, specifications. And the last thing I wanna mention is it does come with a speed rating on it, and they stamp it on the sidewall, and it's by a letter designation. So right after the tire size, we went over, you'll see two numbers for the load index, and then the letter M. Speed rating M will mean this has an 81 mile per hour speed rating.
