Standard Trailer Tire Tread

Contender Tire Tread

The standard tread on these tires has solid, continuous ribs, and it has very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. These tires are designed for use on trailers, so they don't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Contender radials have double polyester cords and double steel belts. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

One word, Great!!!
Sal J - 02/16/2018

tires were delivered in sturdy cardboard boxes. i was concerned with loosing trailer height from the road because the original tires were P235 75R 15 . Installing these
ST 225 75R 15 load range D it appears the trailer is at the same height. tires look
excellent and have more clearance to the trailer frame than original tires.

by:

i installed four of these tires on my 6 X 12 landscape trailer.
i had a load of wet compost on board approximately 2300 lbs.
the tires did great , u could not even notice a bulge in the sidewalls where the tire
met the road. have not traveled far with these tires yet.
so far they appear to be very good

by:

I recently ordered two idler hubs a rim and tire to repair an older trailer I'm trying to make road worthy again. The hubs were for a #3500 Lb Dexter axle. I went with the cheaper hubs and while they are most likely imported the hubs were machined well and fit with no issues. the E-Trailer website was easy to use and really helpful when I was trying to determine what type of bolt pattern I had.

Thanks!

I havent used the trailer much, but I havent had any issues with any of the products I purchased.

I was able to call etrailer to help me find the right tires, the customer service was great. I bought the tires, and I received them really fast. i was really impressed with the packaging. each tire was in its own box and no damage. i would definitely continue to do business with etrailer

by:

So far, the tires look good. The only thing I was a bit worried about is the date code on the tires are from almost a year ago. I understand that etrailer keeps them out of the elements, but I have also been warned about reaching the 5 year life expectancy of tires.

by:

These tires were a perfect replacement for our travel trailer and had a recent DOT manufacture date. I also like the fact that they were shipped in heavy-duty boxes to protect the tires which also made it easier for me to take them to the installer for mounting. Excellent quality tires for a good price, great job etrailer, thank you!

by:

Ordered the tires and they showed up the next day with free shipping! What an awesome company to do business with. Thanks Etrailer!

by:

Great product came in on time tracking on the order was perfect came in right when it said it would will be ordering two more tires from them soon for my tandem trailer

by:

Ordered them yesterday and they came the next day, faster than I expected. The tires are on the rims now and plan to put them back on the flat bed trailer this week end. They look to be just what I wanted in a tread pattern, more solid , without all the small groves that the last set had. (Goodyear) Driving on gravel roads just are them up.

by:

great bang for the buck

by:

I purchased 4 tires and am very happy with how quickly I received these. I feel good knowing that I have new tires on my horsetrailer.

by:

Rating is on etrailer.com. Tire purchased as a spare that I hope I never need. However, I am a repeat customer and will continue to be. Products and service are always spot on and above!

by:

Good quality tires for great price service was fast and prompt would hesitate to buy tires or anything else for my trailer from etrailer.com

by:

Good tires. Thought they didn’t have the best tread; but actually work out great in off road terrain. They also do very well on the highway.

by:

Great service. Have used etrailer.com before and will continue to use them for all my trailer needs.

by:

Seems to be a good quality product at a good price, they don’t have too many miles on them yet but if anything changes I’ll write another review

by:

etrailer is a pleasure to deal with. Tires have tread style I was looking for.

by:

They are good tires and are wearing very well. We use them often for hauling hay and equipment for our farm. Thank you George C

by:

WAS A MATCH TO MY SET

  • Trailer Tire Replacement for Size 8.55-15ST
From the research I did on your tire size of 8.55-15ST that would indicate that the modern tire size equivalent is ST225/75R15 which is a very common tire size. The Contender trailer tire part # C22515D is a great option for that size. It has a higher speed rating than most trailer tires at 81 MPH and is also priced great.

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for Size ST225/75-15 to Replace P235/75-15
No that would not be a good idea at all. You have to run the same size tires on all wheels of your trailer and you have to make sure those tires are rated for trailer use. Passenger vehicle tires cannot be used on a trailer. We have the Contender trailer tire part # C22515D which would work well for you as it is an ST225/75R15 like what your trailer has on the driver side.

  • Replacement Tires for Trailer with Size 255/75-15 Passenger Tires
You are on the right track getting rid of the car tires for trailer tires. Car tires aren't designed for the vertical load that trailer tires are and are more designed for vehicles with a steering axle. The closest tire size we have to what you currently have is 225/75-15 like the part # C22515D which would be a great option. The difference between the D and R in the tire size is the construction of it. D means bias-ply and R means radial which is the preferred construction. The main...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for Load Range D 225/75R15
There's no reason you couldn't go to a Load Range D 225/75R15 over a Load Range C. I'd go with the part # C22515D which has a weight capacity of 2,540-lb maximum load at 65 psi and has a speed rating of 81 mph. To get the full capacity of this tire you will need to be sure you keep the tire inflated to 65 psi at all times.

  • Operating Pressure and Temperature for Travel Trailer Tires
Trailer tires always indicate their rated psi-pressure on the sidewall. Trailer tires should ALWAYS be inflated to this COLD psi rating under all conditions. It is never appropriate to under- or over-inflate a trailer tire for any reason, such as to compensate for extremes of temperature. Any inflation pressure other than the rated maximum will tend to lead to the tire overheating, and overheating is the single most-common cause for trailer tire failure. The tire you referenced, part #...

  • Matching Contender Trailer Tire in Size 225/75R15 with 108M and 8RR on Sidewall
The correct matching tire you are in need of is the Contender part # C22515D. This is an exact match to the numbers you mentioned so this would work great as a spare.

  • Replacement Tire For 8.25-15 or H-78 15 Trailer Tires
The suitable replacement for H-78 tires would be the tire size 225/75-15 which is 1.3 inches different in diameter from the 205/75-15 tires. I suppose you could get away with the 205/75-15 to get by in an emergency or temporary situation. However my recommendation of a tire such as Contender ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # C22515D will give you piece of mind. The maximum speed rating is 81 mph (speed rating M).

  • Why Choose Radial Tires Instead of Bias Ply Tires
For highway driving radials like the item # C22515D that you referenced are usually preferred because radials have more flex in the sidewalls which gives them excellent traction on paved roads. For off-road driving or driving on rough surfaces a bias ply tire is often preferred because it has stiffer sidewalls that will hold up better to the uneven surfaces. As far as the weight Load Range goes you can always select the appropriate size tire with a higher weight capacity if one is available....

For your 2012 Keystone Cougar, with that weight rating, I recommend a 6 or 8 ply tire. From what I can find online without the specific model, it looks like you have 15 inch wheels. If that is the case, I recommend the Contender ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # C22515D. These tires have an 8 ply rating and a load capacity rating of 2,540 lbs at 65 psi. They also are rated for up to 81 mph. This will be great tires for a tandem axle trailer with GVWR of 10,000 lbs.

  • Replacement Trailer Tire Recommendation for Trailer with P223/75R15
You should never run a P rated tire on a trailer. Whoever installed those tires on your trailer did so hopefully by mistake as that's not safe at all. A great tire to use as a replacement would be the part # C22515D which is an ST225/75R15 that would fit and work well. It also has a higher speed rating at 81 mph compared to most trailer tires that are only rated for 65.

  • Uneven Tire Wear Due To Tire Pressure Or Speed
On your travel trailer you have seen uneven tire wear because you were not running at max psi until the last 4,000 miles. Trailer tires are designed to run at their max psi when inflated cold (prior to your trip). They will heat up and build more pressure as you travel, but they are intended to run at that psi. When you lower the psi, you will cause the tires to overheat and the wear can be seen over time as you are experiencing. If the speed rating is exceeded on your tires this can...

  • How to Pick Out Trailer Tire that Has Higher than 65 MPH Speed Rating
You didn't give me a tire size that you are looking for but the Taskmaster radial trailer tires we carry are rated for up to 81 mph so that would be your best option. You would need to select your tire size from the filters at the link I attached and all of the tires listed there will be rated for 81 mph.

  • Can Passenger Vehicle Tires Be Used in Place of 225/75R15 Tires
We can not ever safely recommend using passenger tires on a trailer. They are not rated for the vertical load that trailers see. If there is any way you can save up till you can afford to use all trailer tires it will be the way to go. In the tire size of 225/75R15 we have the part # C22515D which is pretty cost effective and would also potentially save you money in the long run in the event of passenger tires failing on your trailer and causing damage!

  • Recommended 225/75-15 Tires for 11,000 Lb GVWR 5th Wheel Trailer
The Contender ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire part # C22515D is a great option, one of the best we offer in this size. They have a very high 81 mph speed rating and come with a two year warranty. In regards to weight, you will be just fine for an 11,000 GVWR. Please note, the total weight capacity of the tires will almost never meet the GVWR of the trailer due to the tongue being supported by the vehicle which is usually 10-15% of the total trailer's weight.

  • What PSI Should Trailer Tires Be Filled To When Tire and Info Tag On Trailer Are Different
Trailer tires such as the Contender ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire part # C22515D should be inflated to the max psi listed on the sidewall while the tire is cold. If a different set of tires have been installed on the trailer then this may contradict any info tags on the trailer but regardless, you'll need to fill the tires to the psi rating on the sidewall of the tire.

  • If You Upgrade Trailer Tire Load Ranges Should You Increase PSI
Trailers tires, regardless of load or application will need to be filled to the max psi listed on the sidewall while cold. This is to ensure the correct temperature remains inside the tire as well as the correct wear pattern. If you upgrade tire load ranges then this can sometimes lead to a harsher ride so your first thought is to reduce pressure but this will unfortunately create issues with temperature and wear. This is the reason that you really shouldn't upgrade load ranges unless absolutely...

  • Can Different Load Range Tires Be Used Together On a 5th Wheel Trailer
The tires on a trailer must all have the same load range rating as each load range requires a different psi rating. If you were to fill them all to the same psi then the weight capacity of said tire would be compromised. Therefore, you are going to need to choose a new tires that matches the load range of all other tires on the trailer. If you were to go against this then you would be at risk of a blowout due to increased heat buildup. If you can let me know what size tires you have on...

Trailer tires - of any size - do not have any type of average life span; how long they last depends on a number of factors. Doing this will give you the best performance, allowing the tire to wear more slowly and give you optimum gas mileage. Also be sure you have the correct load rating for your tire and follow the speed rating. In addition, radial tires are better for things such as...
