Winch is great quality and works for our purpose just fine even though it is seldom actually put to use. Needed a way for grandkids to raise/lower the heavy metal door on our “Turkey Palace”. As they virtually never actually do this, the adults raise and lower it by hand as it’s time consuming with the winches gearing. On the occasions when it is used, it does the job admirably and I would recommend it.

Comments
We’ll I’d have to say that the winch hasn’t been used at all after it’s initial trial. Not because of any fault of the winch, simply because no one wanted to take the effort to use this heavy ramp. I have opened it by hand the few times its been opened.

It is a great winch. We use it to lift firewood about 12 feet with a jib crane on to our deck. It easily and quickly lifts lifts 350 pounds of wood using either a corded or cordless drill. It does not require a ratchet but stays in place when the drill is not attached even under a load. We use Dyneema synthetic line(sailboat rigging) rather than steel cable as it is stronger and easier to work with. It’s a great winch. Nothing but good things to say about it. This is our second season using it and it looks and performs like new. It by far outperformed my expectations.

Comments
We are extremely happy with the winch after a year. Using an electric drill it can lift 700 or 800 pounds easily and quickly. It does not need to be locked into place. It holds its position. Everything I wanted in the winch and it’s holding up well. would recommend it to anybody.

It's performance is great. I've had to winch heavy items with ease ( Cabinet Table Saw, Chipper, Tote full of soil (90 gallon)). Used the Electric drill adapter with no problems. The winch is mounted on a Karavan Trailer ([home improvement store])... Made winch cover from a 5 gallon bucket.

Comments
The product has performed well. A great help to have.

This hand winch is awesome. It works perfectly for a DIY bow draw board that I made. The worm gear holds the bow at any position in the draw cycle allowing me to check cam timing, peak draw weight etc. It’s way overkill for this project but I don’t have to be concerned with the winch slipping or breaking.

by:

Great product. I used it to create a motorized hard top lift for my Mazda Miata. I just use a cordless drill fitted with a long extension and socket to power the winch. This is perfect because I can remove or replace my hardtop by myself with no assistance and the worm drive winch will hold position by simply stopping the drill. I can make very minute adjustments in height very easily. Way, way better than a pulley system.

by:

Not your normal use of a worm gear winch, but here it goes. The photo is of a Comet sailboat, built circa 1960. This boat is owned by my older sister, she will be 75 this year, she has lost some strenght in her hands and couldn't get the centerboard up , down is easy with gravity and all, found your product and applied to my problem.

Very easy to install and use, either manually or with a drill. Good solid construction. One DL winch replaced a 40-year old mast-raising electric winch that failed. The other DL winch replaced a rusty hand winch for tilting the mast over that was too difficult to turn. Both new winches make raising and tilting over my ham radio antenna simple. Highly recommended. Good experience with etrailer.

Winch arrived a few days after I ordered it. Very prompt delivery ahead of schedule. I am very happy with the winch. I used it to lift heavy meat carcasses in my walk in cooler. Works extremely well with little effort. I especially appreciate the opportunity to use a cordless drill to operate it. I highly recommend this winch and would definitely buy a second one if needed.

Comments
I have had this winch for a year now and it works great. I wouldnt hesitate to repeat this purchase. In my opinion it is still a 5 star purchase.

Very well-built!

by:

Excellent winch. Used an 18v drill with a 5/8" socket/drill socket adapter and 2 pulleys with the winch. Use these on the ranch and can easily winch a compact & mid series tractor onto a trailer as well as lifting game feeder barrels. I have purchased 5 of these winches from eTrailer for various uses which eliminated the manual effort and strain of hand crank winches and rope & pulley winches. I keep the worm gear cleaned & greased and apply a few drops of oil on the shaft bearings which should keep these winches working good for a very long time.

by:

A solid, simple, flexible winch that will work for me whether powered or with power. Bought it to use on the roof of the RV to pull up a very heavy kayak.

Used it today and the winch performed great but will have to rework the inclined plane constructed from 2" schedule 40 PVC pipe. There was too much deflection.

by:

Look, a worm gear winch is slow but powerful!! Don’t know if you know this but the physics of worm gear winches will not allow reversal, (in other words they won’t release unless you release them). I use this winch EVERY day! It’s an animal!! Get one and try it out with a snatch block. You will not be disappointed!!!

Far exceeded my expectations! Really impressed with the heavy frame and construction. I am a heavy equipment tech. by trade. I have used worm gear winches to pull heavy loads. The beauty of a worm gear winch is the anti-reversing effect. I am driving my winch with a cordless drill. I two part my system and pull logs up a hill. At 54 my arms are wearing out. I can't crank a regular style winch all day and or come along. I am every excited about using this unit for a long time. Sorry no photos.

One of my greatest purchases ever. My driveway is inclined and I'm getting old. I need to bring my boat in nose first so pushing it into the garage was getting difficult. I bolted this winch to the floor and now use my electric drill to winch it into the garage using just my trigger finger. The unit is well made, pretty fast with a drill - much faster than the d/c models, and plenty of room for lots of cable. Excellent tool and I highly recommend.

by:

Just got the winch mounted and cabled up..
Would
prefer the grease for the unit come in a self application pack.. I got the red stuff all over trying to thread the cable onto the drum....
Someone recommend hooking a drill up to the unit to load the cable and that is what I did.. Really helped out.
Will see how it works once I get the load attached to the hook...
well made and look forward to using it for years to come...

Comments
The winch worked well for me. We are using it to raise and lower a 40 mirror ball through a chandelier opening when needed. The electric drill makes the installation of the mirror ball real smooth. Very pleased with its performance and not for sure if we could even use the mirror ball in the position it is in without this specific winch.

I use my Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Winch with Hex Drive and Fulton Winch Cable to raise and lower my Purple Martin Gourd Racks. They were an excellent choice and I just use a Cordless Drill to do all the work.! My old winches had cranks. They were jerky and hard to crank! These winches are so easy to use, no cranking, no straining, no sweat, they stop when you stop.!! Very Strong, Safe and Reliable Winches that work Great!! Wish I'd got them years ago!

by:

I use this Hex Drive DL Winch to raise and lower my Purple Martin Bird Racks. It's Great because all I have to do is use a 5/8" Socket and Drill to do all the work for me. No lifting, straining or cranking. As a Disabled Vietnam Vet it has made my life much easier - Wish I'd got them years ago!!

Comments
Its been a year now since I purchased my Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Winch with Hex Drive. It is a quality product and works impressively to raise and lower my Purple Martin Racks. Using a cordless drill expedites my Nest Check time. And a Worm Gear Winch is the best brake winch you can get when you stop raising or lowering it stops. One of the most efficient and reliable Winches on the market today.!

by:

I really like the functionality and ease of operation. I am using mine to raise/lower my deer feeder to 17 feet. With a full feeder of 300 lbs of corn this winch simplified the process using a battery drill to drive the worm gear. Installation was made easier using the adapter plate from the same mfg.

by:

We are using the 2 winches in place of a rope pull and cleat for 2- 20 foot wide commercial roll up curtains that are elevated. We did not want to risk the curtains dropping when being rolled up or down as it has a 50 lb weight bar in it. The worm gear adds the safety feature of locking the load at any point of use. It is operated with a battery drill and socket. Great quality, good option of this application.

by:

Works great! Use it to raise an lower my evaporator hood on 2.5x10 maple evaporator. No worries about slipping!

by:

awesome product we have 2 one to lift salt into our water softener, the other to list our canoe via rope hoists. We use a drill attachment rock solid winch!! Cant go wrong with this product!!

by:

These are great winches with the Hex Drive worm gear and made in the USA. The worm drive is superior to other winches and although slower, the ability to use a cordless drill more than makes up for the winch being slower. Been using the hand crank mesh gear winches to raise/lower 400 lb barrels and after seeing someone use one of these winches with a cordless drill, I decided to replace my old hand crank winches that will significantly reduce the effort and strain using a hand crank.

by:

Amazing product! I went with another brand first, and their worm gear winch is garbage! This one works just like the first day I got it. I use it as the lifting mechanism for a sit / stand workbench. Definitely need a drill unless you are okay with your arm falling off.

by:

The worm gear winch worked as well as I imagined it would. The hex drive allows me to use my electric drill to lift and lower the load. A two speed drill is mandatory. This winch is really well built.

by:

This was perfect for my purposes on a crank over amateur radio antenna tower. It is not a real tall tower about 34' of Rohn 25. The DL11011 folds it over and raises it back up with ease. Good for us old guys who don't want to climb to fix a problem with an antenna. The removable handle is an added safety feature, and a cordless drill will make the job MUCH easier and faster.

  • Does Dutton Lainson Worm Gear Winch DL11011 Require Cable Fastener
To secure a cable on the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Winch - 1,500 lbs, # DL11011, you will use a series of loops around the reel and gear. You will not need to use a cable fastener or cable keeper to do this. I have attached a diagram that shows how the cable should be fed through the reel and gear for you to check out. I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson and she assured me that a 3/16 inch diameter cable will work with this winch. I recommend using the Hand Winch Cable - 3/16 Inch...

  • Will Dutton Lainson Worm Gear Winch Lower Itself If Holding Something Suspended in the Air
Worm gear winches like the Dutton Lainson part # DL11011 that you referenced by design cannot lower themselves. They basically are the best "brake" winch you can get since it's essentially impossible to have the spool of the winch rotate without the handle being turned. These are the best style for any type of hoist where something is going to be lifted in the air for this reason as you don't have to worry about a brake mechanism releasing and dropping the load.

  • Is there a Separate Braking Mechanism Needed on the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL11011
Yes, you are correct that for the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL11011, once you stop turning the handle the load on the winch will be stopped due to the worm gear function of this hand winch. For this particular, and most worm gear winches, there is not a free spool mode. To extend the the line you would turn the handle one direction, and then to retract the line you would turn the handle the opposite direction. This is due to the interaction between the handle driven worm gear,...

  • Will The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish 900 lbs Work To Raise 70 lb 16 Foot Canoe?
The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish, Single Speed - 900 lbs., # DL15002, will meet and exceed your needs for lifting capacity. You can use a good quality synthetic rope instead of a wire cable if you like as long as it fits the manufacturers recommendation. In this case, the capacity of the winch is rated on using a 40 foot long 3/16 inch cable. • Hand Winch With Top Crank Handle for Loading 5 x 8 Utility Trailer
The only problem I can see with your choice is that worm gear winches take a lot of cranking before anything happens. The crank revolution to drum revolution ratio is 30:1, meaning you'd need to crank the handle 30 times to make the cable drum rotate once. You can lessen the pain by removing the handle and using a heavy duty 1/2 inch drill with a 5/8 inch socket to turn the winch at a less sedate pace. Due to the fact that you're wanting a top crank winch, your choices are pretty limited....
