We have this winch attached to a round bale cart. We use it to lift 1200 lb round bales of hay onto the cart for transport and unrolling. So far it is holding up and working well. Just a month or two leeft of feeding hay.

Prior to buying this one I have had two others of lesser size, quality and lower price that didn't last one season.

Comments
Still working well. No issues. The two speed is very handy for us.

So far all is good. definitely heavy duty. way heavier and stronger than the one I replaced. hopefully it works as well as it looks.

I have a bunk trailer with carpet. My boat is a C-Dory 22’ cruiser. This winch is awesome! There are times I am at a shallow ramp so I have pull the boat more on bunks then float. Having a low gear makes this effortless. Only thing I really do not like it the removable handle. I always worry it could be stolen. I have been meaning to order a spare. Would be more awesome to have a socket attachment for electric drill.

Comments
It’s a great winch. I have a bunk trailer and low tide retrieval is much easier now.

Wind ripped one of my old wenches right off my dock leaving the bolts in place and the winch and cable to shore post in the water. I ordered two of these very heavy duty winches and replaced both the old ones and so far they are doing a great job and have no problem dealing with the high winds we get at the lake. I would have given it 5 stars except for one problem. The winch handle is removable and got knocked off during install and fell into the water. Had to order another handle. I now leave the handles in the dock closet rather than risk losing another one. I rarely need to attached the cables that keep my floating dock in place. If yours is going on a trailer I would recommend not leaving it attached.

Comments
Working great, no rust, no problems, two on dock with cables to shore as dock floats. High quality wenches.

Great American made product, I ordered this for my father's flatbed for him and he really likes it. It's rare that he does find products that impress him. To me, it is well worth the money.

Received the DL3200A winch with free shipping ahead of time due to Etrailer up grading the shipping for free. I have the winch installed on my boat trailer and it works great. I would recommend Etrailer because of their great service and expediting the winch to me without extra charge.

by:

I used the new winch and 10,000 lb strap for the first time this week-end. Worked like a charm pulling our cruiser onto the trailer.

Comments
The winch is absolutely fantastic! Works like a charm and pulls like a team of draft horses! I wish I would have purchased this product 15 years ago with my boat. Thanks for the follow-up.

by:

I have honestly not installed it yet but can see it is built much stronger than the winch currently on my boat trailer.

by:

Bought this 3200 lb winch to put on my boat trailer, it pulls my 11,000 lb boat up on the trailer with ease, the only issue i can see is the removable handle, looks like it could vibrate off on a rough road. Ill just keep in in the truck, shipping was quick and boxed well, ill order another one if i ever wear this one out.

Comments
It worked flawlessly for one year and then the locking brake tooth wore off, can I get that replacement part?

I have a bad back and recently was diagnosed with congestive heart failure so I have lost a good deal of my strength. My boat is a 16 1/2 Alumacraft with a 60 horse Mercury motor and in the past, I had no trouble loading it with my old single stage winch. My new winch is just what the doctor ordered. It makes reloading easy again. My only problem was that the handle fell off on the way to the lake first time out. I found it laying on the shoulder but it incurred some damage as the clip holder was gone and the rubber handle cover was flattened from being run over.

Comments
I lost 2 more handles because they just fell off. I now detach the handle and carry it in the boat. Otherwise, it works just fine.

Winch has performed well, I use it with a strap and winch a 7000 lbs. boat onto my trailer. The crank does change direction when you put it into the lower gear range and it can be a pain to operate in that direction when you are standing on a trailer tongue above the water. It does see a lot of salt water use and it hasn't corroded. I am not sure I like the detachable handle. I get worried about leaving it at home or forgetting it on the winch when I pull out of the launch, but I just keep track of it.

by:

When i recieved the winch the box was torn up and taped up i know it goes through a shipper but the box was missed handle correctly plus it made me feel that etrailer just wanted my money and that was it also the winch did not come with bolts or screw to mount it on my boat trailer the bolts and screws that on my other winch was all rusted now i got to go get bolts amd screws to mount it on my trailer and the winch did not come with a bolt and a lock nut for the boat strap it only came with the screws and nuts for the cable but if this it a cable and strape winch why not issue a bolt and lock nut for the winch now i have to buy a bolt and lock screw for the wonch so i can put my 10,000lbs sebbing breakable strap on this winch the good news is it look like a tough winch and will find out this weekend when i put it on my 25ft pontoon boat trailer would sent picture how it was ship to me but i will when i update how good the winchbdo

by:

This is the third Dutton-Lainson winch I have purchased- they are the best I’ve used yet. The 2 speeds come in very handy- fast for lighter loads and slow for heavy pulling. The spring loaded handle comes right off and stores so no one will steal it. This winch is the exact same as the DL3200A. Remember this winch does NOT come with a strap. I purchased BOAT BUCKLE 2 inch 25’ strap to put on this winch. The strap has an 8,000 lb rating. I would NOT recommend doing this- the strap is thick and really not designed for the winch. Stay with the same manufacturer (Dutton Lainson) and use one of their straps. This winch also does NOT come with the bolt needed to attach the strap. If you purchase a Dutton Lainson strap they include the needed bolt. Thanks to etrailer for contacting the manufacturer and assisting me with finding out which bolt I needed.
Great product- Great support. Etrailer goes the extra distance to help you with anything you need.

by:

But this as a replacement for a pontoon trailer. Shipping was very fast. We had purchased a replacement went last year that didn’t even last season. This is very well-made, got the boat out of the water with no issues. I’m extremely happy with this purchase and it appears this will hold up well. We couldn’t be happier that we found this site and made this purchase.

by:

I gave it 5 stars but can't get the star to highlight.
I love this winch. Looked at several winches at a boat storage facility and saw this winch over and over on big boat trailers. The older ones looked like they had held up well.
The drum is welded very well. Sides can't easily separate from the spool. The gears, though laminated, are thick tempered steel. The frame is the same thick steel not the flimsy crap at the farm store. If you mount it solid it will do a good job.
I welded a 6x6x1/4 x 20" length of tubing above tongue of utility trailer behind jack. Bolted winch to top of tubing and ran cable thru a roller fairlead mounted on front of trailer bed. The tubing adds height to winch to keep cable from dragging on bed and gives clearance between winch crank handle and trailer tongue frame. I added a door to end of tubing so I can use it for extra storage. Using a snatch block and 50' of 5/16" stainless cable I can drag pretty much anything up onto trailer bed.
Consider the same winch with brake if freewheeling / unspooling of cable is a concern. With proper lubrication this thing freewheels easily. I keep crank handle on winch for a little back pressure when unspooling cable and straighten any loose cable on drum before winching to prevent cable overlap.
Overall I am very happy with all purchases from etrailer. They have what I need and ship it quickly. Great to do business with.

by:

eTrailer was great, the pin for securing the strap to the winch was not included on there box from the manufacturer.

by:

Great product and excellent service from this company. Thank You!

by:

When I first installed it on my boat trailer, I had to make modifications to the mount by adding a plate to mount the winch on the boat trailer to keep it center. The spring in which it locks the fell out and was a pain to put back. I have since removed it from my boat and used the old winch until I can make this one work. Since it has been a year now, I do not think I will be using it. Waste of money for a winch that does not hold up and does not fit right.

by:

I have us this winch everyday since I put it on. It puts my 26'ft. boat on the trailer so easy that I have to check to make sure it is not slipping and it is not. Thanks for a great product. I will use etrailer again.

Comments
I just sold the trailer but the winch was working pretty at that time. Great product.
Marlin - 01/16/2018

by:

This is a strong winch with two gear ratios and a removable handle. The only problem is reverse is only free wheeling which is good at times but some other winches have reverse that holds as you crank. Not a problem for my boat but maybe a problem on a steep ramp and heavy boat. They do offer a model with a brake. The price is good though no hardware provided but replacement bolts were fine.

by:

Winch is heavy duty and the reduction gear makes it easy to snug up the boat to the roller on the trailer. What I don't like is the handle. It will not stay on while traveling. You have to remember to remove it each time. If you order the winch order extra handles cause your gonna need them.

by:

This was a direct replacement of a poorly cared for winch. It fit perfectly, operates as expected, and provided proper care should last a very long time!

Comments
The parts have held up well, with proper care. Our use is around salt water, typically parts can get abused by nature. Theyve performed well.

by:

very happy with the product - happier with etrailer and their customer service.....they were very helpful in making sure the product got to me BEFORE the weekend - without having me pay for express delivery.

Comments
Its been a year now.....all is great with the winch. Funny how once you have a winch go bad, you take note of the quality of other winches.....nothing Ive seen comes even close to the robustness of this beast. This thing is going to last.

Was replacing a Fulton winch which although only 2 years old had quit working had stripped gears etc. Not happy with Fulton quality or workmanship. Bought this DL winch same load rating and you could tell straight out of box it was beefier and better made. It uses better materials and design. Installation a breeze. Used the same day to trailer my boat. Worked like a charm. Couldn't be happier.

by:

Though this is a manual Winch, it functions much better and faster than the old electric one it replaced. It’s been great!

  • Can the Hanlde for the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15440 be Secured on Winch During Travel
The handle for the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15440 is designed so that you can easily move from one speed to the other which is why some people have experienced it falling off while they are heading down some rough roads. You can possibly use a thick rubber band or something of the sort, but the best way to keep from losing it during travel is to remove it.

It sounds like an upgrade is definitely in order. The Dutton-Lainson two speed winch you referenced, part # DL15440 would actually be an excellent choice for a heavier boat like your party barge. Dutton-Lainson winches offer a good balance between performance and cost. A two speed jack is ideal for getting a heavier boat up onto a trailer, the lower speed works well for getting the boat lined up and started onto the trailer, and the higher gear offers additional mechanical advantage to...

  • How to Determine the Model of My Trailer Winch
Some winch manufacturers will stamp a model number and brand name on the base of the winch, so you may be able to identify the winch that way. If you do not see a model number, but you know the brand, I may be able to identify the winch if you can send me a picture. If the winch is the original winch for the trailer, you may also be able to contact the trailer manufacturer with your trailers VIN and they should be able to tell you what winch they put on the trailer when it was built.

We have some very similar winches to the Shelby 5466 that you have but we do not carry Shelby winches any longer. Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks like what you currently have the ratio is 1 to 1. With good rollers and short winching distances, you could increase the ratio to 3 to 1. With wooden bunks and long winching distances, reduce the ratio to 1 to 1.
