  Blowing a fuse is usually the result of a direct short somewhere. Since you are not blowing the fuse after you plug in the trailer connector, it leads me to believe that you have a short that is making connection when you are plugging the connector in and is not shorted when the plug is not being pushed into the socket. I would try investigating both of the connectors and make sure that all of the wiring is secure and there are no wires bare inside the connectors that can be touched together...

• Trailer Side 6-Way Connector that Does Not Use Center Pin for Brake
  A 6-Pole round trailer connector like the Bargman # 50-61-104 can actually be wired one of two ways. The center pin on the connector can be used as either the 12 volt hot lead, or as the brake. Using the center pole as the 12 volt hot lead is actually the more common method. When the center pin is used in the manner, the top right pin location will be for the brake wire.   The general rule when adding brakes to a tandem axle trailer is that if the trailer has torsion axles then the brakes should go on the front axle.
