Video Transcript for Bargman 7-Way RV-Style Connector Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bargman 7-way RV style heavy duty connector. They're available in 3 different sizes, in 6 foot with part number 54006-057, in 8 foot, part number 54006-058, and then finally in 10 foot, part number 54006-059. This 7-way is excellent as a replacement or if you're wiring up a new trailer. It's a pre-wired, 7 blade style connector. The cable itself is flexible so it's easy to position, and the insulated jacket is ideal for cold weather. The easy to grip pads make it easy to disconnect from the vehicle end.Mike works with our customers.

Tell me Mike, what are customers wondering about a 7-way Mike: You can see here they're all different colors and they don't necessarily match up, so what the customers I work with want to know is, what does each of these wires do What Bargman did, they put this tag on all these, and a lot of companies do this, and it tells you the wire color and the function. Then, all you have to do is match it up to the right function on your trailer wiring or to the right function if you're adding new stuff. Speaker 1: Makes it way easier. Mike: It does. Another thing, with this one in particular, it's good for cold weather.

It has really good insulation in there. Another question we get is about the wire gauges on each of these wires, and the 2 larger ones are your power and ground. Blue here is for electric brakes, so these are all bigger, and then the smaller ones are for the lights. Speaker 1: Okay, cool. Well thanks for the information, Mike.

Mike: No problem. Speaker 1: Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. The jacket on our Bargman 7-way comes pre-stripped. To help us out with our installation, we're going to be using some ring terminals, part number 44-5310A.The first step is to strip back my wires. Now since I'm using a junction box, I'm going to want to stagger my wires for a cleaner look.

In my junction box, I know that my white wire is last, so I'm going to want to leave this one the longest. Every wire after that, I'm going to cut a half inch shorter, that way it gives me that clean look. You'll want to double check your junction box to find the order of your wires. To help me out, I took a picture of my junction box with my cell phone, that way I can just follow along. What I'm going to do now is strip back a 1/4 of an inch, clean out my wire, and then place it on my ring terminal. We want it to where we can see the wire just inside but not hanging out. Then I'll take my crimpers and crimp that tight. It's a good idea to check to make sure you've got it nice and crimped and we can go ahead and repeat the same process with the rest of the wires. When you're done, yours should look something like this, depending on the order of your wires. Now let's go to the trailer. Here underneath my trailer, I've gone ahead and removed the cover off my junction box. Now if you need a junction box, you can pick one up here at etrailer.com. Here you can see it's already wired up for my trailer wiring. We'll just be adding our 7-way for vehicle connectivity. Since the front of my trailer is this way, I'm going to be coming in my junction box here, so I'm going to put this over my wiring. Now with my grommet in place, as you can see here, this is where it's going to go, let's go ahead and start wiring up our junction box. We'll start off with our blue wire, which on the 7-way is our brake, put it here. After we get this one done, we'll just continue down the line. I've gone ahead and connected my blue wire to my brake, my brown wire to my right turn, my green wire to my tail lights, my red wire to my left turn, my yellow wire to my back up, my black wire to my battery, which is my power, and then finally my white is my ground. Now if you need help routing your 7-way to the front of your trailer, it can be helpful to use some metal loom clamps, and you can pick those up with part number A0500. Before we button up our installation, we're going to test it out with our tester. The best way for you to test it out at home is with your vehicle. Here's our running lights, our brake lights, our right turn, and now here's our left turn. That's going to complete our look at the Bargman 7-way RV style heavy duty connector.

It is the eact same brand and same wire sizes but the wiring diagram list on the cord and what I see on my pj trailer dump trailer wiring control box do not coincide. Going to be a lot more difficult to make sure its right than just an easy swap unfortunately.

by:

Great product was more flexible than I imagined. Hopefully, I won’t repeat the damage caused when the original pulled out of the truck 7-pin when
Towing under cold ambient conditions. I include. A picture of the original connector I drug for 2 miles until I get safety pulled off the side of the road.

by:

The plug was wired up wrong inside and it’s molded shut so you can’t rewire it properly. Don’t waste your money on this more expensive version, just buy the wire and plug separately and do it yourself. I cut the plug off and wired it up right.

by:

Silicon rubber covering and wire insulation make the cable flexible and easy to install. Very good that etrailer offers the 10' version.

by:

looks good putting it on next week

Great

This cable worked out great for me. I have a Lance slide in camper. I bought a new truck which was wired for a 5th wheel. I used the cable to hard wire back to the camper and it was long enough to reach back to the wiring socket at the rear of the bed. Solved my problem, Thx

by:

A couple of the boxes were mangled and tore up pretty good. Did get it in a timely manner and I do appreciate that, just wish the items were handled with a bit more care.

by:

whilst the connectors and wiring appear to be of good quality, the blue outer sheathing is not durable. The outer sheathing has tore the 2nd day after installation when rubbed against the hitch.

by:

Product was just what I was looking for.
I would like to say something more about the etrailer.com customer service if I may.
I received a call from Molly with etrailer letting me know there was a slight shipping delay of one of my items in my order so if I did need it right away I could make necessary changes. I would like to personally thank Molly and the team at etrailer for going that extra mile!

by:

You guys are always awesome!

by:

Items came very quickly, exactly as described. Will install and see how it works, but appears to be good quality and it costs less than if you try and make yourself out of local wire and connectors - if you can find correct gauge wires.

by:

Remained pliable all winter and much higher quality than the cable it replaced. I will only buy this brand in the future.

  • Troubleshooting Dirty 7-Way Not Working with 2017 Ford F-150
The 7-way plug you sent in a picture of looks a bit rough and is most likely not working on your 2017 Ford F-150 because of corrosion preventing the circuits from being completed. You can try cleaning the pins with some sandpaper to see if that takes care of the issue or you could replace the 7-way with a new one like the # 54006-059 that you referenced.

  • Can 7-way Connector Be Replaced Without Replacing The Cord?
You can replace just the 7-way connector plug on your RV by using the Pollak Black Plastic, 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector - Trailer End # PK12706. I do recommend removing the wires from your current connector one at a time, and immediately connect them to the same location on the new connector to make sure everything gets installed correctly. The color of the wires on trailers are not standardized so you will not want to just install the connector based on the colors. I included...

If your 2003 Chevy Silverado has a 7-Way connector I recommend keeping the 7-Way that you have # 54006-059, and using it to replace the 6-Way on the trailer. A 6-Way is not nearly as common as a 7-Way blade style connector. You just have to determine the functions of the wires on the trailer and wire them to the new 7-Way accordingly. The functions on the 7-Way should be as follows: White Wire = Ground Red Wire = Left Turn and Brake Brown Wire = Right Turn and Brake Green Wire = Tail...

  • How to Determine Wiring Functions of 7-Way Wires on a Truck
I don't know the color codes for your trailer connector so you will need to use a circuit test like part # PTW2993 to determine the function of each wire, label them, and then wire to the 7-way. Or you can use the chart I attached to see where the functions of each pin on your 7-way should be and then use the previous wiring locations of the 7-way to determine the functions of each wire.

This is an interesting (frustrating) issue we've recently discovered with a lot of the new GM trucks, specific to the Bargman 7-Way # 54006-059 you mentioned. The problem is with the "fins" present on the factory 7-Way for these new models, which prevents the Bargman 7-Way from properly seating into the connector.
