Today in our 2007 Nissan Murano, we'll be installing the Hopkins adapter, four pole to five pole trailer wired adapter, part number 47515. Our vehicle already has a four pole installed on it, so we'll start there. What this does is it makes your four pole, that comes on your vehicle, into a five pole. To start out, we'll just go ahead and plug these two together. These are removable if you don't want to keep them constantly connected. And you see you just unplug this quick connector here that holds the reverse light wire together. For this application, since they will be pulling a boat with this vehicle, we're just going to go ahead and keep these together, and if you want to, you can just go ahead and un-tape them and separate them. I'm just going to go ahead and stop right now, here at our quick connector, and we can go ahead and tape the rest of it up once we make our connection. Now with this application, we are going to have to probably extend our blue wire. Since you can see the four pole that comes in our vehicle is pretty long, so we'll just extend it here underneath our paneling and run it to our reverse light circuit on our vehicle. Next we need to go a head a remove some of these panels back here so we can get to the wiring.
Go ahead and lift this compartment up, get out of the way. Remove our spare tire cover. In this compartment there are two 10 millimeter bolts you need to loosen up, and then that's just going to let you lift this compartment up so you can pull your carpet back. Right here there's two push fasteners that hold this cover for your handle in place. So we'll go ahead and pop that out. If you have a trim panel tool that will make it a little bit easier.
And then we need to go ahead and remove our tie down hook here so we can pull this panel back. There's a little cover here, just pop it loose, and it'll expose the 10 millimeter nut here. Just set that aside. Next you can go ahead and take your trim panel tool, get underneath the edge of our panel back here, pop it loose, and that'll allow us to pull this back a little bit. And then you can go ahead take that compartment out of the way, and it'll allow you to pull this back even more. So now I'm going to go down to the end of our four pole with our blue wire that comes with our kit. Just tape it off so it stays bundled together and it doesn't come apart. If you follow it down you can peek underneath here, underneath the headliner. You can see that the wiring follows this paneling here on the side, and eventually comes all the way down here into a bundle and goes all the way across. Right here, there are a couple of factory zip ties that are holding a bundle of wires together.
If you undo a couple of those zip ties, there's a couple of green wires with white stripes. These will be your reverse light circuits. One of them will be hot when you put your reverse lights on, and when you put in it park or drive, it'll go off. The only time this wire is hot is when the reverse lights are on which triggers the reverse back out on your trailer. Then we need to go ahead and connect our blue wire too. So we'll go ahead and take our quick splice connector that comes with our kit, feed it over our wire, a little snap on.
And then we can go ahead and take our blue wire here, feed it into our connector, and crimp it down. Once that's crimped together, we can go ahead and close it. Now we'll go ahead and take a couple of zip ties, zip tie our wires back together, and then we can install our interior panels again. And then I'm going to go ahead and take a little electrical tape just to wrap that connection up to protect it. Now we can go ahead and trim off our zip ties to clean up our install look and reinstall our interior panels. And we're ready to hook up to our trailer and test out our new wiring. Now we can go ahead and put our new five flat wiring right in our storage compartment and when we're not using it, it'll just go right here underneath our hatch. When you need to use it, go ahead and lift it up, bring out your wiring, and go ahead and hook your five pole up to your boat trailer and hit the road. Now when you need to use your new five pole, go ahead and just shut the door. The weather stripping will protect your wires from getting crushed. You do want to make sure you keep the quick connector here out of that though, so you keep it on the inside or the outside. Now go ahead and test out our new five pole. We'll take our ground here, put it on an open terminal. That'll be our ground circuit. Turn on our running lights. CCI signal there, our left turn signal, our right turn signal, our break light circuit, and this fifth terminal here will be our reverse lock out circuit that we just installed. So we'll put our reverse lights on, and then we'll go ahead and turn them off. As you can see when our vehicle is in reverse we get a signal, so when we're backing up our boat trailer the reverse lock out comes on, and the breaks don't stay on. And that'll do it for the Hopkins four pole to five pole wiring adapter part number 47525 on our 2007 Nissan Murano. .

I had a 2 inch trailer hitch and 4 pole flat wire harness professionally installed on my 2001 Dodge Ram Pickup. When I bought my boat the trailer was wired for a 5 pole flat harness. Took my truck back to the installer to have the harness exchanged and was told that there was no 5 pole flat harness made for my 2001 truck. I asked about splicing a 5 pole flat harness to the 4 pole flat harness and was told by the installer that they don't do splicing and because the 4 pole harness was already installed I couldn't get a refund. So the search was on to fix this problem. Stumbled upon the etrailer E-commerce site and found what I was looking for. A 4 pole flat to 5 pole flat adapter. The price was right, the service was 5 Star and I received the adapter in 4 days which was perfect. I had time to install it, and get my boat on the water that weekend. Thanks George J. I will be using etrailer for all my trailer needs.
This item was bought for another individual and has worked out immensely! Kudos to the folks at eTrailer for having exactly what was needed and getting it to us so quickly. I have and will continue to sing their praises for any of your trailring needs!!!
Product as advertised. Shipping slightly delayed but that should be expected with the driver shortage. Have always received quality products from Etrailer.
Etrailer is exceptional to work with
I've used this product before with good luck, yet the contacts on the last one I ordered corroded in less than a year, which was disappointing.
Works as advertised. Needed a 5 pole for by boat trailer and this did the job. Had it installed in 30 minutes
This is the perfect product for when you already have 4-pole trailer wiring but simply want to add a 5th wire for powering the reverse lockout on surge brake trailers or just the backup lights on a truck bed converted into a trailer. It plugged right into the factory connector on my 2011 Ford Ranger. Only ONE splice was needed: the reverse light wire in the taillight. You also have an additional location for wiring in an aftermarket backup camera IF the vehicle's electrical system allows for the extra current. Only complaint is that it didn't come with its own connector cover, but I was able to get that off of etrailer too!
Haven't had chance to use it yet, looks good though
This product is very well made. Instructions are a bit brief, but plenty of info online to get it installed. The reverse wire on my car was too small to work with the splice, but I connected them directly w/ a "T". Worked flawlessly with my trailer. The length of the wire on the adapter allows you to make the connection INSIDE the car which will surely extend the life of the connection. Overall great and simple design.
I put this on my 2016 Kia Sorento. Do yourself a favor and watch this instructional video "Hopkins Trailer Wiring Adapter Installation - 2014 GMC Acadia". Another great tip for my application is to buy an extra 20 feet of 16 guage wire. I ran the wire from the tailgate on the inside of the weather stripping and snaked the wire into the utility tray in under the back flip up compartment. When I need to hook up the adapter - I just run it out of the tailgate and hook it up. This keeps the adapter out of the elements when not in use.
I purchased this for my 2019 Subaru Outback, but I have not installed it yet because I have not had to pull the trailer that requires that adapter yet. However I did purchase one of these for my Toyota Highlander several years ago, and it worked perfectly. It takes the signal for the reverse light and uses it to deactivate the trailer brakes so that you can back up without physically going out to the trailer and locking out the brakes.
Great product! I have a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that only has a four pole flat connector. I have a boat thats needs a five pole because it has surge brakes. This was the perfect solution. I just had the fifth wire connected to the back up light and plugged this five to four pole adapter that was already on the vehicle. Problem solved. It came quickly. I accidently ordered two and I got a call from Etrailer questioning my order. I thanked them and said I only needed one. They saved me the cost of the second adapter when most companys would have just sent them both- and charged me for two.
easy instal, works great!
This is perfect! Instead of having other (longer) 4 to 5 pole adapters that hang and have to be tucked somewhere, this one simply disconnects and is stowed away until needed. Thank you for the great service!
been searching for a 4 to 5 flat adapter and yours is perfect. good instructions and follow up was great. I will check with y'all for any future trailer needs.
The five-to-four harness adapter was exactly what we needed to be able to tow our tent trailer with our car rather than our motorcycle. And it arrived so quickly! Thanks for helping us solve the problem so easily and economically.
Fits good, professional looking installation. I did it myself in the driveway with some help from my wife and a roller jack and some jack stands. Only thing I had to do that I don't think was mentioned in the video was to unhook the tailpipe from the bracket & lower the tailpipe as far as it would go to push the hitch in place to line up with the holes.
This adapter is wonderful! It continues to work like a charm, was easy to install, and the price was right. Needed it for hauling my boat trailer that has hydraulic brakes. It has made it through all kinds of Wisconsin and Minnesota weather on my Jeep Wrangler and will last like any other wiring part that is exposed to the elements. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to adapt 4 pole to 5 pole trailer wiring.
This adapter works great. I didn't know what I was going to do. I have a couple of boats and trailers, some of them have the lock up breaks that need to be plugged in to operate. With this little beauty installed I can now plug in all of my towable vehicles without rewiring for each. I looked at every auto and trailer shop around me for resolution but could not find anything. Thanks etrailer, you made my life a little easier.
The product's great the price was great and shipping over all is really great
Works as promised. Easy to install, easy to use. Allows me to use my 5-pin Boat Trailer plug with the vehicle's 4-pin set-up. Adds the extra Reverse Line to turn off trailer brakes when backing up, wouldn't be without it!
Arrived very quickly with the basic shipping. Adapeter seems to be made well. Just googled the diagram of the wiring harness to figure out which wire to spice into (white with the green stripe). Install only too about 5 minutes all said and done.
This product was everything that is says that it is. Suggestion for hatchback owners, though. See if your reverse lights are in the hatchback or on the fender panels before purchasing this product. If they are in the hatchback, as in the 2014 Escape, then you will need to purchase a longer adapter or additional wiring as the routing of the wires to the closest reverse wire is substantial.
Worked perfectly for our needs. Had a trailer hitch pro install it. Quick and simple for use on our Four Winns trailer.
The wiring harness worked great. It solved the problem of a 5 wire harness in a 4 wire plug.
