Video Transcript for Review of Hopkins 7-Way Blade to 6-Way Round Pin Wiring Adapter - 47549

Jeff: Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at this Hopkins seven way blade to six way round adapter. Now this adapter will plug into your vehicle's side seven way blade socket, and it converts your connector format to a six way round pin type. You can see it has this nice tethered dust cap on it, then when it's not plugged in, you can protect the terminals. Now, one note on this adapter, the center pin is set up as the more common 12 volt hot lead, but it can easily be changed to work with trailers and will have the center pin wired as the brake. And to do that, what you'll first want to do is you'll need a circuit tester to test the pins in your six way connector. Basically just ground the alligator clip to the vehicle chassis, and then touch the test light to the center pin on your six way connector.

If the light and the tester lights up, then that means the center pin is hot so it's wired for 12 volts. So you can use it as-is.If the center pin is for the brakes, it'll only have power when your brake pedal is applied or when the manual brake lever on the brake controller is activated. So if it does work that way, you need to switch it. You can easily do that. What you'll want to do if you need to switch it, all you have to do is switch the blue and the black wires that are inside this adapter.

So what you'll do is basically just remove this tethered dust cap, and then if you'll notice right here, there's two screws here and then two right up here. If you just unscrew all four of those screws, this'll split in half, in the inside you'll be able to see where the black wire is attached to the center pin. And then you also see a blue wire, all you have to do is just switch the black and the blue wire, attach them back down, put your screws in. Go ahead and put your dust cap back on, and just like that you're ready to go. So it's pretty easy to switch between the two.But that should do it for the review on the Hopkins seven way blade to six way round adapter..

We had been having trouble with our other adapters, no brakes or intermittent brakes. This adapter fits better than any of the others ever have, great connection and is holding tight. I will be picking up some more of these. The only downside to me was they came on the value shipping which is rather delayed for us and I would rather pay to get it here more quickly. I was needing it and it was several days getting here. We ship a lot and I know shipping directly with USPS goes faster than that and is not expensive.

It works just like new! No complaints at all. I noticed another review stated theirs is not fitting, sometimes the pins can get a little distorted on the vehicle side and can be easily straightened.

Added the gooseneck trailer plug in bed and I wanted to be compatible with new and old style plugs. Adapor worked great.

Excellent

I unplugged the broken plug-in trailer part from my truck
and attached the new part that I bought from your company. It actually fit in the same holes which I bolted back on. Plugged it back in to my truck, hooked up my horse trailer and all my lights worked!!!! I didn’t replace the male end on the horse trailer and it all matched up perfectly. Very easy to install

by:

Bought this adapter to use pulling our horse trailer. It's worked great.
Cathy was very helpful when I called with questions prior to purchase.

The trailer light adapter has worked just fine. I only use it periodically, but when I have, done the job!!! Thanks for checking on it!

One year ago I called etrailer to order parts. The customer service rep was very knowledgeable and helpful. Thank goodness for knowledgeable people. Makes my life easier. I do think etrailer has a good system in place and a desire to excell and be good at what they do. The products still work fine. Thank goodness- since etrailer doesn't do the manufacturing.
Thanks etrailer.

by:

Very good product, fit both ends well. the 6 point side that is for a trailer was just a tad loose but alittle electrical tape for extra insurance works fine.

by:

Was easy to change 12v and electric brake wire internally for trailers with the two opposite of each other causing brakes to lock.

by:

This was just the adapter I was looking for but no one had enough information to determine the brake signal wiring for sure - except for etrailer. Their technical information is always way ahead of the others. The price was great as well. Delivery was outstanding. They will get all of my business for trailer supplies.

by:

Plug works great

by:

Works as designed. It's wired for the six pin round to have the center pin as the aux, and the electric brake on the outer ring, which is fine. I note the advertisement says these two pins can easily be swapped, but there was nothing in the instructions which indicated how that might be done.

by:

Great products, fast delivery and good prices. They had everything in stock including the Ford specific brake cable and 7 to 6 pole adapter. Ordered last Monday. Received on Thursday. Put every in this weeked and am using it today (one week after order placed.

by:

Works great. Does what its supposed to do - converts a 6 pin round plug on a trailer to a 7 pole jack on the truck.

by:

This product worked perfect to upgrade my trailer to my newer model wiring system on my tundra

by:

Love this cause, I just don’t have the time to re- wire the bucket truck so it’s nice to just plug this in an I can hook are chipper up !!!!

by:

Appears to work well adapting a 7 pin motor home to a 6 pin magnetic light system.

by:

Good quality product. Easy to change pin configuration. Great replacement for worn out adapter. Received product in just a few days.

by:

I needed another product that I couldn't find locally and also needed this so I ordered it from etrailer also. Postage cheaper than gas to go find one and etrailer price was very resonable. Nice people, great commication, and super fast shipping.

by:

The adapter arrive in record time and worked very well. The web site had useful information that helped in the selection.

by:

Worked great, all lights worked. Want to thank Diana for her help ordering this product and shipping it to us on time for us to go camping.

Thanks again

by:

The product works fine but... what a great company. An informative website and great followup. All companies could learn something from eTrailer's example. They really care about what I think.

by:

Got a new truck and needed an adapter for our soon to be traded in trailer. This worker great. I have ordered several items form etrailer and their service is great.

by:

The product was good, however it doesn't fit into my 7-way plug. Something is not aligned right.

by:

Bought this in case I might need it one day. Have not used it yet. Seems to be of good quality.

  • Trailer Right Turn Signal and Brake Light Not Working
The right turn signal/brake light not working on a trailer could be the result of a bad ground, broken wire, corroded trailer connector or a blown fuse or relay on the tow vehicle's tow package wiring. Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. The light grounds should also be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces....

  • Troubleshooting Right Side Turn Signal Not Working On Trailer
This sounds like a ground problem on the right side. The turn signal not working makes sense because with the brake lights, there is a constant signal coming through which is enough to make the lights illuminate on both sides like they should. But the on/off of a turn signal does not offer enough consistent voltage and makes the problem apparent. On the vehicle, check to see if there is a turn signal fuse for the tow package wiring that may have blown. You can use your owners manual to...

  • Trailer Connected to 2012 Ram 2500 Causes Truck Reverse Lights to Come On
The center pin on your 2012 Ram 2500 is probably wired to the reverse lights. The center pin on the trailer is probably wired to a trailer mounted battery or breakaway system battery and it is back feeding to the trucks reverse lights. The trailer could have more than 1 battery on it. What you will need to do is figure out what is wired to that center pin on the trailer side. I have included a picture that shows the pin out functions of a vehicle side and trailer side 7-Way that should...

  • Problems Using 6 To 7-Way Trailer Connector Adapter
What you are experiencing is a common problem. There are two methods of wiring a 6 to 7-way trailer connector adapter. One method uses the center pin for the 12-volt accessory power feed, the other uses the center pin for the brake output. Most adapters can be opened, and the connections swapped back and forth so that the correct circuits match up. Using a car battery, you can determine which way the 6-way on this particular trailer is wired. Make sure the trailer is disconnected from...

  • Trailer Wiring Has 5-Wires White, Yellow, Green, and 2 Browns
If it was a 4-pin connector with 5 wires then it is called a wishbone harness and would have 2 wires attached to the running light pin so you have one wire for each side of the trailer. Typically, on a 4-Way, the white wire is ground, brown is running lights, yellow is left turn/brake lights, and green is right turn and brake lights. On a wishbone 4-Way you would have a ground wire and then you usually see a brown wire with yellow stripe for the left side running lights and a brown wire...

  • Troubleshooting Replacing Trailer 6-Way With 7-Way
Wiring the brakes to the 12 volt hot lead would make them lock up so you need to be sure you have the pins on both connectors wired in the same way. Use a circuit tester to make sure the pins on your vehicle connector match the pins on your trailer connector (see accompanying photo) and make any necessary adjustments. The other issues is that you may have a short somewhere in your brake wiring so you can go over the wires on your brakes to see if there are any broken, nicked or crimped...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring Replacement with 6-Way Where Trailer Brakes Lock Up After
With 6-way trailer wiring there is two very common wiring pin-outs used and the only difference is that the 12 volt accessory circuit and the brake output circuits are swapped. Whenever we hear about 6-way wiring and brakes locking up the issue is always related to the wiring being opposite. So what you need to do is swap the brake output and 12 volt accessory circuits and you'd be set.

  • Gooseneck Trailer Running Lights Stay On All the Time When Connected to Truck
The likely culprit is a dirty or corroded connector on either the trailer or the truck. Make sure each is clean and free of corrosion inside and out. Corrosion could be causing a short between the running light circuit and the 12 volt circuit in the trailer connector. If that does not solve the issue then make sure the circuit for running lights on the truck side is in the 11 oclock position if looking at the pins. And on the trailer side make sure the running light wire is in the 1 oclock...

  • How To Identify What Wire Goes To What On a 2005 Pop Up Camper
With trailer wiring the wire colors are only a guide and not everyone always uses the same color wires for every circuit. The best way to ensure that you have the correct wires is to either follow the wires to their connection or to test each wire to determine what it controls on your 2005 pop up camper. Often times the wiring is ran to a junction box. This may also help you to determine where the wiring is ran to. The ground wire is generally exposed and the easiest to identify. Once...

  • Trailer Brake Lights Not Working on a 5th Wheel Trailer
What it could be is the tow package fuse or relay for the brake lights is blown or otherwise not working properly. You will need to check the vehicle owners manual and/or check the power distribution box lid to find the tow package fuses/relays in question. Add or replace the offending part and test it again. If that was the problem and it blows again then there is a short somewhere, most likely a bad ground which could be where the two connectors come together or at the trailer tail lights.
