Video Transcript for What to Know About the Hopkins Adapter 7-Pole to 6-Pole Universal with LED Tester

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number HM47535. This is the Hopkins adapter, 7-pole to 6-pole. It's going to have the LED tester right her on the front face so that's going to be a built-in trouble shooting system. It's going to let you know what's not connected correctly or it's going to signify when things are connected correctly. This adapter is going to convert your 7-pole plug on the back of the vehicle to the 6-pole plug to fit your trailer's connector. The center pin on the system is going to be set up as electric brake but that can easily be changed to work with trailers to have center pin wired as the hot lead. To change the functions all you have to do is remove the screws.

There's going to be 4 screws, one right here, one right here and then 2 back on this portion here. That's going to open up the housing, it's going to split in half. You need to remove the dust cap ring as well. Open it up and then you can change out or switch the black and blue wires. It does include the nice little dust cap here, that's going to cover up the connection point when you don't have anything connected. When installing this an important note to keep in mind is that you want to locate your wires and pin location by function only.

Color coding is not standard among all manufacturers. Here on the front fact it's going to have some indicators, this side says LTTM, this side says RT and EB. LT is going to stand for left turn, TM is going to stand for the taillights. RT is going to be right turn and then EB is going to be for electric brakes. That's going to do it for our review of the Hopkins adapter part number HM47535. .

We are a U-Haul Dealer and bought this for use as a test device only. We need to test many vehicles trailer connections to be sure there are no issues before renting a trailer. Some vehicles have the trailer lighting connection mounted in a way that makes it impossible to see the lights on the testers. Of all the testers that are on the market, NOBODY makes one with the test LED's on BOTH sides of the unit. With the test LED's on the end of this unit you can always see them, regardless of the position the trailer socket is mounted! We have the same problem with the 4 pin testers. We purchased 2 different brands where one tester has the LED's on the top, the other has them on the bottom.

Your website led me to believe that this product could tell me whether the electric brake control on the tow vehicle works, without actually connecting the tow vehicle to a trailer. That is not the case, so I spent $20 on something I don't need.

This adapter converts the 7-pole plug on the vehicle to a 6-pole plug. The LED tester lights is meant to show that the lights are working.

I ordered a 7- pole to 6- pole adapter as an emergency part should I need to connect a 6-pole universal trailer which some of the older trailers are equipped with. I haven't had occasion to use it yet but it looks like it will work well. It is a compact and appears well made unit. I'm sure I will have a need for it down the road and gives me peace of mind that I have it in my truck when the need does arise. The service was great and the price was right. Should I need any trailer supplies in the future, I know where to go.

  • Is There a Replacement Dust Cap for the Hopkins Trailer Connector Adapter
I checked with Hopkins but they do not offer a replacement dust cover for the Hopkins Trailer Connector Adapter part # HM47445. I don't think we have anything else that would work in its place as well so your only options are to replace the adapter completely or try to rig something up yourself. Please note, it might be worthwhile for you to upgrade the adapter to the Hopkins Adapter 7-Pole to 6-Pole Universal with LED Tester part # HM47535 which has built-in lights for easy troubleshooting.

  • Do You Have a 7 RV Blade to 6 Pole Round with LED Test Lights (Center Pin Electric Brake)
Yes, we do carry the Hopkins 7 RV Blade to 6 Pole Round w/LED Test Lights (center pin electric brake). It is part # HM47535. If your trailer lights are not functioning correctly, you can isolate the problem by simply looking at this adapter.

  • 7-Way Round Pin to 6-Way Round Pin Adapter
For a 7-Way round pin to a 6-Way round adapter you can use either # HM47445 or # HM47535. But if the 7-Way round you want to adapt is a big rig 7-Way then this adapter will not work properly because big rig trailer connectors have different functions. I have included a picture of the functions of an RV 7-Way Round pin connector.

  • Correct Pin Out for Truck and Trailer 7-Way Blade Connectors
Attached are some photos of the typical wiring functions for truck and trailer 7-Way blade connectors, like parts # PK11893 and # PK12706. If you typical pull a trailer that has a 7-Way connector then you want to follow the pin out diagrams I mentioned. If the chippers that you tow have a different configuration then the Hopkins Adapter # HM47535 will likely do the trick because you can change it so that the center pin is either related to the electric brakes or the 12V power.
