The 5-way flat connector is found on most newer boat trailers that have hydraulic brakes. The fifth wire in this model ties into the reverse lights on your vehicle so that a signal can be sent to your hydraulic brake actuator to disengage whenever the tow vehicle is put into reverse. To use this function, your actuator must have an electric reverse lockout with solenoid.

The 5-way design will also work with small utility trailers that have electric brakes. For this type of application, the fifth wire will need to be wired to correspond with your in-cab, electric brake controller.

The female connector is attached to the swing arm of a motorcycle to provide lighting lighting for a trailer pulled by the motorcycle. This means that there is likely much more movement in the harness than for an automotive application. I've never had a problem with any part of the harness. I found this product to be exactly what I wanted, well made and easy to install. The protective cap functions well as it remains pliable (flexible) after a year of use, and while it has never fallen off in use, it is easy enough to remove before making the connection. It has done the perfect job of keeping mud and other detritus out of the contacts. The recessed nut holders also function well and is one of the reasons I chose this wiring kit. This wiring kit gets high regard and recommendation from me. All of my purchases from etrailer have been solid products delivered at reasonable cost.

It works, still. Does the job I need it to do. Not much more to say. In general, I tend to like the stuff that Hopkins makes.

The quality of this connector is great. I installed ea one end to the hitch platform on the motorcycle and bolted it down then did the same on the trailer. I used the old connectors to make a jumper between them. Works great and I don’t have to worry about wires getting damaged. Love it

One year after installing the conversion of drum to disk brakes on my single axle EZ Loader boat trailer, the brakes continue to work perfectly. I've had no reason to seek assistance on service or warranty.

With the help of Crystal I ordered this connector and a matching wiring harness for my motorcycle and trailer. I was unsure if these were the correct parts, but Crystal was able to locate the exact ones and ship them the same day.
I was very pleased with the fast service and knowledgeable staff. Even with standard shipping, my order arrived 4 days sooner than was projected.

To say I'm happy with etrailer is an understatement. They are great.

Have not had opportunity to put products to use yet. Products look like they should do the intended job well. Etrailer.com does have really fair pricing and shipping time is outstanding! Received complete order within 3 days of placing order. Will definitely use again.

by:

Replaced a round connector that was unreliable and would loose connection over the road. This flat 5 pin makes 100% connection every time and stays connected. The boot is also weather tite when connected or not so there's no corrosion. Great product.

by:

Order was shipped promptly and the product was of great quality.

  • How to Wire 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector for Hydraulic Surge Coupler
The vehicle end of the Hopkins # HM47890 would install on the vehicle by tapping the green striped wire into the right turn, the yellow striped wire into the left turn and the brown striped wire into the running lamp circuit. The remaining blue striped wire would tap into the reverse lamp circuit. The white striped wire would ground to the vehicle frame. On the trailer end, the connector would install the same way, with the extra blue stripe wire connecting to the reverse lockout solenoid...

  • Would the Connectors of the Quick Fix (TM) 4 Pole Flat Car and Trailer Ends Attach to a 5-Way
The connectors that come with the part # 48195 are 4-way connectors. A 5-way would mate right up to this connector but the fifth circuit would get dropped off. If you are looking for a replacement set of 5-ways for both your trailer and tow vehicle you would want the part # HM47890.

  • Installing Trailer Brake Wiring to Existing 4-Way Trailer Wiring
Since you already have the 4-way trailer connector like # 18004, to add your electric brakes you simply will use the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit - Vehicle and Trailer Ends - Ergonomic Design # HM47890 and match color for color with your existing 4-way. The 5th pin will be used for your trailer brakes instead of a reverse light which is the other typical application for 5-way wiring using that blue wire on the trailer side. The same will be done on the vehicle side...

  • Replacing 7-Way Trailer Connector with Smaller Connector to Tow a Trailer with Brakes
A 6-way round trailer connector, like # HM48420, once it's mounted isn't going to be much smaller than a 7-way. If you don't need any functions other than running, brake, and turn lights along with the brake circuit I suggest going with a 5-way flat connector like # HM47900. To put a 5-way on both your tow vehicle and trailer you can use the kit # HM47890 that includes both connectors.

It sounds like you have a trailer with separate tail lights from the brake light circuit and you are looking to convert the 4-way from your motorcycle to a 5-way. First thing you will need to do is convert your combined tail light circuits to a separate tail light circuit. So like you said you would need another converter box. This will give you a clean connection of both sides to run to your battery terminals.

The Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator part # 099-175-20 has both an electric lockout as well as a manual. The electric one is a single wire on the back of the actuator that will be hooked up to the reverse light circuit on the vehicle. The manual one is engaged by placing the safety pin in the hole on the side of the actuator housing. Instead, I recommend you use the Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connectors # DW05744-5 and the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit - Vehicle and Trailer Ends # HM47890. If the lights at the middle of your trailer are connected to the turn signal circuit then they will go solid when the brake lights are activated since trailers are wired with a two wire system. There really is no easy fix for this problem that I am aware of. • Why Does Surge Brake Actuator With Electric Lockout Work on One Truck But Not the Other
What is happening here is that your surge brake actuator with an electric lockout uses the reverse light circuit to activate the electric lockout. • Does Electric Lockout on Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator Have to be Connected to Backup Lights
If you only have an aftermarket backup camera tied into your OEM wiring then I'd be surprised if the electric lockout on the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # 8608611 blew any fuses. I suppose you could technically wires it to any 12V power source as long as you made sure it sent power back when you are backing up, but then you run the risk of damaging trailer and tow vehicle components so I don't really recommend doing that. It would be best to connect it directly to the reverse light circuit. If...

The pin furthest from the ground pin (on the vehicle side 5-Way) will be the one that is not used. If the two connectors will not fit together, you can use Wiring Kit, # HM47890. • Can 5-Way Trailer Connector Be Used for 12V Trailer Power
I'd be happy to help you out with this! The 5-Way connectors are designed for smaller gauge wire that we see with light circuits as opposed to the larger wire used for 12V power. Because of this you'll need to install a 7-Way connector on your trailer as it will be able to handle that larger wire and the power coming through it. To accomplish this you can use a simple 7-Way connector like the Pollak # PK12706 or a junction box setup like what we have with the etrailer Kit # e99011 which...

What you're looking for is the Reverse Lockout Solenoid # DM11993. When the vehicle is placed in reverse it powers the solenoid and does not allow fluid to go back to the trailer brakes. It is actually easy to add a 5-Way flat to the vehicle and the trailer.
