The 5-way flat connector is found on most newer boat trailers that have hydraulic brakes. The fifth wire in this model ties into the reverse lights on your vehicle so that a signal can be sent to your hydraulic brake actuator to disengage whenever the tow vehicle is put into reverse. To use this function, your actuator must have an electric reverse lockout with solenoid.

The 5-way design will also work with small utility trailers that have electric brakes. For this type of application, the fifth wire will need to be wired to correspond with your in-cab, electric brake controller.

I needed the extra wire to run for multi-led lights mounted underneath the steps at the rear of my trailer, when in reverse trailering. This connector seems heavier-duty compared to many on the market and so far is still working well after a year or more. As with most products from etrailer, I haven't been let down yet.

Here's a real special GOTCHA moment I had recently; My trailer jack stand, which I had purchased from my well-known and popular local trailer company to replace my original had rusted to pieces. I needed a replacement quickly and trusted I'd get a decent product and price as had been the norm over many years. Anyway, I purchased the new jack and wheel and brought them home to install myself. Upon taking the jack out of the bag it came in, I noticed a sticker from etrailer, yea. Before installing I went online, saw that my jack was less than half the cost I'd just paid, and realized I should have purchased the jack when I had originally shopped online at the start of this replacement process.

I could have returned my over-priced items but decided I didn't have the time due to procrastination. I decided they could keep their extra profit on this purchase but I won't get fooled again and my local shop has lost my trust.

The product arrived in a timely manner and undamaged. I have not used this 5 pole adapter yet, but the 4 pole adapter I previously bought from etrailer years ago is still working great. I have no reason to doubt that this adapter will function equally well. I appreciate the good products and customer service from Etrailer.

Good quality for the price. Product photos are a perfect representation of what to expect. Connector is a single, solid molded plastic piece.

Good quality! Easy to install! Ordering and shipping was easy and very quick!

Glad you were able to expedite shipping. I'm back on schedule. Thanks, Ray

I bought this to replace the 5 pin connector on my boat trailer after an electrical short melted the connector.

Connection is solid to the 7 to 5 pin adapter. Protective cover is nice to have as the boat trailer spends its time sitting outside.

Only complaint I had was one of the pigtails was a non-traditional color so visually it looks off when wired up to traditional trailer wiring. Can't recall which was off as I no longer own the trailer.

this item was inexpensive and did the job for which it was ordered perfectly. It was used to connect to a 5 pin wire coming from my RV in place of the typical exposed bulky receptacle found on the front of many towed cars. This was installed under the hood of my car and could be flipped out to connect to the RV coiled pigtail. The fifth wire, which is typically used for back up was instead used to provide power to keep the battery charged when connected to the RV with the RV engine running. This has proven to be sturdy and after a year of use has continued to perform as virtually new. The small whole in the sides allows me to connect the two plugs and use a "wire paperclip" to assure they wont unplug due to an excessive tug when towing. buy again and recommend YES.

Solid product, great service!
It was
a little confusing, du to my trailer had 7 wires and the current plug had 6 wires. I phoned a friend.. LOL

Glad you have a friend that could help you Mickster! Dont forget that customer service is available to help you if you should run into problems. Thanks for taking the time to write a review!!

by: was great. The plug arrived as expected and packaged well. It is well made and appears it will last for many years. The only thing is I wish the wires and the protective sleeve was longer. I would have liked to spliced it back where it entered the trailer but ended up using butt connectors with shrink wrap that show in the middle of my wiring. Had to use the old rubber tube protector half way and the new mesh protector on the plug the other half with butt connectors between two types of cover. I covered those with black tape, not very pretty but works well.

I just got my order in on Monday the delivery was a fast turn around. I am in the the process of converting my boat trailer lights to all submersible LED lights. The five flat wires are clearly marked which will make splicing a snap. I am converting from a four flat plug to a five as I also am installing reverse LED back up lights on my trailer. The five flat to a seven round adapter allowed me to do that. The quality of the product on a scale of 1-10 in my opinion is a 10. The 7 round to five flat adapter is also a 10 in my opinion. Very happy customer thanks etrailer I will continue to do business with you again.

speedy, excellent, courteous service

The trailer pigtail ordering process was quick and easy, delivery was fast and the product was very high quality. Good experience all the way through.

That what we love to hear Larry!!! Hopkins appreciates your business and we are grateful you purchased our Trailer Connector. Thank you !

Worked as intended. Stress relief off the plug is a plus as well as the dust cap. Used it to power an LED light bar from the trailer circuit. Light bar is temporarily mounted on the swim deck of my boat when towing.

Hitch fit great. Installed it myself. Wiring was plug and play. Was a little difficult to get to the wires behind the panels. I do recommend this hitch.

Great product for a fair price...looking for a 50mm hitch ball but was not a stock item so etrailer ordered it from the manufacturing co. Ashley is great to work with...if she doesn't have an answer for a question she will find someone who does. Highly reccomend this vender.

Being a new boat owner I was quickly overwhelmed by what I didn't know. Re-wiring, re-lighting my trailer was my first project. etrailer has a wide range of products, but most important to me, was their added product information and instructional information which helped me make the right selections to get this done. Add to that is their very competitive prices. etrailer will be my go to source for my future trailer needs.

Excellent customer service!

Pretty straight forward product. Not sure how much I care about the 'ergonomic design', but the nylon sleeve and heat shrink saved me the trouble.
Good price, and fast shipping.
You can't go wrong with etrailer. I have bought many items from them, had an issue with one, and their customer service was excellent. They replaced it immediately. This is the first place I go to for trailer parts, and they have some other cool products they sell as well.

All the products I purchase from etrailer (most recently trailer bearing grease and five pin trailer plugs) are always high quality and do the job they are designed to do. The prices are reasonable also.

Easy to install.

Just what was needed to connect my new motorcycle trailer. Local trailer store didn't carry the one connector. Can always count on etrailer to have what I need.

Great quality product! Used this on my disc brake upgrade to my boat trailer. Needed the 5th pin for the backup lockout on the coupler. Works like a charm!

I re-wired my boat trailer and up-dated my lights with these things.. great products worked better than I thought !

Great quality, good materials, good wire gauge, covers built in. Just all around nice.

Thumbs up!

Have yet to install but it's Spears to bea quality product. The service from trailer was excellent! Always has been and have never disappointed.

Bill F.

Working out well! Harness carries all the electricity it needs to!

  • Could the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector # HM47910 be Used for a Reverse Lockout
The fifth circuit on the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector # HM47910 that you referenced can be ran to a reverse lockout solenoid like what you have on your trailer. You mentioned a video where this was used for a brake output circuit, but the more common use of a 5-way is for the solenoid like what you have. The install video I attached shows it being used for a reverse solenoid.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Tail Lights not Working when Tow Vehicle Head Lights are On, Toyota Tundra
This to me sounds like a ground problem. It sounds like your tail lights function until the additional load of having the head lights of your vehicle are turned on and then the lights cut out. The reason this manifested after the vehicle swap could be a lower voltage output of your latest vehicle. Either way I would check the grounds on the tail lights of your vehicle and make sure they are making a good connection to a clean metal surface. I attached an FAQ on trailer wiring for you...

  • Wiring In a New Trailer Side 5-Way Trailer Connector
Wiring by color can prove to be a bad idea since there technically isn't a standard for wire function and color. On Hopkins trailer side 5-Way, the white wire is the ground, brown is for running lights, yellow is left turn/brake lights, green is right turn/brake lights, and blue goes to the reverse lockout solenoid like you said. To determine the functions of the wires on the trailer you could either trace each one back to see where each goes. Or you could apply 12 volts of power to...

  • Adapter For 5-Flat Towing Plug to 4-Flat Trailer Light Plug
If you were wondering if you need to make the trailer a 5-way, technically a 4-way and 5-way can plug into each other, so you don't have to do anything. You don't even have to wire the vehicle side. But if you want the function of the 5th pin, then you will need to add a 5-way to the trailer and wire it with # HM47910.

  • Adding An LED Backup Light To A Trailer
Yes, you certainly can connect the backup light wire to the reverse light on your pickup. Just as you said the red wire to power and the black to a ground. The LED light being polarity sensitive will not be an issue. You wont damage them if you mistakenly wire them wrong, they just wont work.

  • Replacement 5-Way for Trailer that Has 5-Way with 8 Wires Ran to It
Your current 5-way has two wish boned circuits. One on the running lights and for the reverse light circuit which is why two wires run to each pin. All you'd have to do is run both of the trailer wires of each circuit to the single wire of the replacement 5-way like the part # HM47910 and you'd be set. It would function just fine as this is a very common situation.

It's pretty easy to wire up a 5-way flat with five wires in place of a 5-way flat with eight wires. There are multiple wires with the same function, you'd simply be combining these wires into one. I called Hopkins to double check the wire gauge on the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way flat trailer connector, # HM47910, and # HM47900. I also pulled the wiring harnesses to see for myself which wire size the harness is constructed with. Our technical representative at Hopkins checked their build data and said the wires for both harnesses are 16 gauge wires. So with all of the discrepancies, I decided to pull some wire and produce a short video detailing the size of the wire for you, see link....

Yes, a 5-way trailer connector can be used with trailer brakes. You'd have to make the 5th circuit of the 5-way the brake output circuit and you'd be set. For a replacement 5-way for your trailer the best option is the part # HM47910 which you'd need to wire by function to your trailer wiring keeping in mind that some of the circuits may be duplicates which would wire to the single wire of the 5-way. • Can a 4-Way Flat Connector on a Boar Trailer be Plugged into a 5-Way Float on a Tow Vehicle
You can just plug the 4-Way connector on the boat trailer into the 5-Way connector on the vehicle and it will work; just like you have described. There are some cases where some 4- and 5-Way connectors will not physically plug into one another. If that is the case with your set up you could splice in a 5-Way on the trailer using # HM47910 and just put a wire nut on the very last wire since it will not be used on that particular trailer.
