4-Way Trailer Connector Installation

Because the color/function of the wires on this connector may not match the color/function of those on your vehicle, be sure to use a tester (sold separately) to double check the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness before installing this connector. Once you've figured out the functions of your vehicle's wiring, use quick-splice or butt connectors (sold separately) to connect the corresponding wires on the trailer connector.

The number 1 reason trailer wiring comes up faulty is a bad ground, so make sure your ground wire has a solid and clean connection to metal. To make this connection, you'll need a self-tapping screw (sold separately) and the the included ring terminal.

Wiring Configuration

Wire Color Wire Function
Green Right turn and brake light
Brown Tail lights and running lights
White Ground
Yellow Left turn and brake light

Connector is Easy to Mount

This connector can be mounted on your bumper or attached to another bracket (sold separately) that mounts under your bumper. Simply run self-tapping screws (sold separately) the through molded-in holes on the connector housing.

Quick Tips:

We install a lot of wiring harness around here, so we thought we'd share a few tips we've picked up over the years:

  • Butt connectors - especially heat-shrink ones - provide the most secure, longest-lasting connection, so we'd recommend you grab a few and swap them out for the quick-splices in this kit.
  • Use a circuit tester on the plug terminals once the harness is installed to make sure everything's working. There's nothing worse than figuring out that you have a bad ground or a faulty connection right before you're about to hit the road.
  • Be sure to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the 4-way plug to protect the terminals from dirt, grime, and corrosion.

Hitch for 2018 EcoSport SES. Easy to install and looks good. Wire end with cover also looks good

by:

Your product works great that’s a Pit a great help. Thank you.

by:

Once again, if I'd bought the custom wiring harness, it would have saved me some time

by:

Product was awesome. My last two connectors have corroded so bad within a year that I constantly was having to take a wire brush and clean off the pins to get good contact. I'm waiting to see what the environmental cap does to eliminate me having to do this. Also bought the vehicle side. Would highly recommend this to anybody with a trailer hook-up. Only thing I would suggest is to make sure anybody purchasing also buys the splices since none come with the product. All in all, a great buy. Thanks!

Using dielectric grease in the trailer connectors can also help reduce corrosion of the contacts.

  • No Tail Lights On Boat Trailer When Parking or Headlights of 1995 Ford Truck Are On
It sounds like you have a common ground problem. When the headlights are on, the highest amperage draw is placed on the wiring system and if you have a bad or loose ground, you will have problems with lights. You will want to inspect to make sure all the light assemblies have a good ground connection to a clean, rust and paint-free metal surface. You will also want to make sure the trailer and vehicle side connector have a good ground connection. I would recommend unbolting the ground...

  • Replacement 4-Way Recommendation for Vehicle with 5 Wires Ran to 4-Way
For a very rugged replacement 4-way for you to use on your vehicle we have the part # HM48030 which would work well. Chances are you have two wires ran to the running light circuit of the 4-way. What you can do is run those wires together and then run them to the one running light wire of the # HM48030 and you would be just fine.

If you're instead looking for the vehicle side which is designed to be installed on the tow vehicle then you will need the Hopkins Endurance 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector part # HM48030. These harnesses both require splicing whether you are just replacing a trailer connector or wiring one for the first time.

  • My Trailer Lights are Very Dim what Could be the Issue
That's a tough one! You have already done everything I would recommend on the trailers side. It is definitely a ground issue and the only thing you have left is the plug end on your truck or the ground wire from the plug to the trucks frame. Check the ground connection to the frame of your 2005 Ford Ranger first then if that doesn't get it done put a new 4-way flat on the Ranger like the Hopkins Endurance 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector Socket part # HM48030. The ground wire on the trailer...

  • Parts Needed to Replace 7-Way of Motorcycle Trailer with 4-Way
To replace the 7-way of your trailer with a 4-way basically just requires you to install a 4-way like the # HM48030 in place of the 7-way. You really only need trailer lighting functions so what you would want to do is use a jumper wire to put 12 volts from a vehicle battery onto each of the wires of the trailer's wiring to determine which wires you need. The 4-way has white for ground, brown for running lights, yellow for left turn/stop, and green for right/turn stop. If you find that...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2012 Kia Sorento
Your 2012 Kia Sorento has a separate wiring system. This means that the brake lights and turn signals are on different circuits/bulbs. Trailers on the other hand have a combined system with the turn signals and brake lights on the same circuit/bulb. If you wanted to change the wiring on your trailer to match the 4-Flat on your van, that would be the simplest solution. All you would need to do is cut off the 6-Way, use a circuit tester # PTW2993 on the vehicle side to make sure you know each of the wire's functions and then install them in a 4-Way # HM48030. Keep in mind you will also need to use a separate 12V power source such as a battery in order to test the trailer's functions.

  • How to Stop an LED Accessory from Tripping the Towing Sensor on a 2019 Ford F-350
So this will sound odd, but sometimes these kinds of accessories that plug into the vehicle's trailer plugs can trick them into thinking a trailer is connected. That being said, the work around is equally odd. As most of these will utilize a 4 Flat harness for the power and signals, you simply need to install another 4 Flat harness, like the Hopkins Endurance # HM48030, directly to the corresponding wires behind the tail lights. This is a pretty common occurrence with the Ford F-Series trucks.

You basically have two choices at this point. You can either buy a different 4-way that will fit through the hole of the # 18144. Or you could cut off your # HM48030 and then run the wires through the front of the # 18144 and then reconnect the wires to the 4-way wiring of your vehicle. Check...
