Video Transcript for What to Know About the Hopkins Endurance 7-Way Blade Trailer Connector w/ Holder

Today we'll be reviewing part number HM48500, this is the Hopkins Endurance 7 way trailer connector for the trailer end with an ergonomic design. It's going to feature the ergonomic pistol grip, which is going to be very easy to use when it comes to plugging in or detaching. It's also going to feature corrosion resistant terminals. The really neat thing about this is that it has a mounting bracket that it comes with, so it's just going to fit over the top. It also has the mounting hardware that you need to secure the bracket, and it's going to hold the 7 way connector up out of the way and it's going to keep it off the ground when not in use. So this is the 7 way round trailer connector.

It's going to come with the hardware, a zip tie, and some terminal grease. That way it's going to provide a nice, quick, easy install and it's going to provide a nice clean look using that mounting bracket. It's got the little rubber spout here on the end that allows all your wires to feed out, youve got a screw here that you can undo for quick access to make all the connections that you need. And again, that pistol grip is really handy when it comes to plugging this in, or unplugging from the connection. That's going to do it for today's review of part number HM48500, this is the Hopkins Endurance 7 way trailer connector.

I loved the concept of a robust RV style plug with holder. Unfortunately the design is flawed to three different failure modes.
My trailer has the heavy duty, 7 conductor wire used in larger trucks.
1) The first failure occurred by using a too small a screw to hold the sides together. It's design is split down the middle with only the center screw to hold it together. Rain easily gets inside the connector as the split shell design is too thin and opens up at the slightest change of cable angle.
2) The screw strips easily as well.
3) The blade connectors inside the plug are not well retained and can slip back into the connector. This is especially exciting with the ground wire, as trailer brakes are important going down hill.
I would not recommend this product and replaced mine with a cheaper, more robust design that I have used over the years.

I really wanted to like this item 48500, but after using only once, I decided to replace with model 48510 (Metal). I obviously like the product and ergonomic designed since I brought another (better) one. Night and day difference.

The cons on this product is 1. I'm using on a boat trailer. The housing felt like putting together a cheap plastic toy. When wired and assembled the plug would still move a little and was not completing snug within the unit. I can see no way it could keep out rain, no less work on a boat trailer. 2. There is only one screw and it's very easy to strip when trying to tighten to a snug fit. I would attribute this to the quality and the very short screw supplied. My unit stripped on the second try, hence the other model.

Personally I found model 48510 to be a much better product. For one, it has two screws (the other screw actually secures the plug to the METAL housing within the unit). As a result, no movement in plug, and thus no movement in wire connections. More metal means less plastic. It also comes with a longer and bigger screw for a completely snug application that I now feel comfortable using in a marine environment. Unit 48510 feels solid - like professional equipment.

My opinion is spend the few dollars and spring for the better model.

Don't buy this product if you wiring cord covering the seven wires going to your traileris heavy duty. You will have a VERY difficult time terminating the wires in the plug and then getting everything back together. The plastic handle on the back of the plug and the metal frame that it mounts to leave almost no room for the wiring.

I think Bob H. is referring to the size of the wire bundle he has on his trailer that he needed to fit into the connector. If you have a full 7-wire bundle, particularly that uses heavier gauge wires, it could be problematic fitting it into the connector. I've emailed Bob H. to let him know about your question and he can come back and add anything he might have.

Im not sure what gauge wire the OP was using but my insulated cord of 3 12 ga. and 4 14 ga. wires fit perfectly!

I was pleased with the delivery time and the simplicity of the product. However, when I removed the old plug, I was unable to trace the original connections. There were no instructions using the color coded wires coming from the trailer. However, after some time on the internet, I was able to find a diagram that matched the same color of wires and eventually got the wiring connected correctly.

Second time using e-trailer and I can't be happier. Fast shipping, exactly what I ordered and received in perfect condition. Keep up the great work!!!!!

by:

Well built product. Easy wiring instructions. Purchased the truck side of this Hoppy product also (HM48480). These are replacements for old wiring connectors and these are a much better product than what I orginally had on both the truck and trailer.

by:

Arrived fast! Using this connector for a camper hookup. I was glad to find one exactly like the one I broke. Easy to plug in and unplug in a tight space. The mounting bracket keeps the connector out of the way when the camper is off my truck. Thank you!

by:

Great connector for the price. It's only plastic, but it feels plenty sturdy for most applications.

The product is holding up well. About what can be expected from plastic in the elements. It is an acceptable product for the price.

I like the design of tnis connector. It is plastic but seems like it will hold up. Perfect match for the multi-tow vehicle end connector. The directions are clear also. Had no problems installing it.
