Overload Spring vs. Leaf Spring

Note: This kit is designed to fit a vehicle with factory top overload springs. As shown in the picture above, a top overload spring sits above the factory leaf spring pack.

SuperSprings diagram of roller and shackle system for extra leaf spring

These additional leaf springs add support and sway control to your existing OEM suspension. Just bolt on SuperSprings over your existing factory springs, and they automatically work when you need them. As the factory spring flexes, a roller at each end of the beefy helper spring reacts to engage the helper spring and to provide extra support. The springs help to better distribute cargo weight throughout your existing suspension, channeling that weight to the points on the frame that are designed to support heavy loads.

SuperSprings leaf spring installed on a vehicle

Placing these leaf springs above your factory springs helps to keep your OEM springs from twisting, so the SuperSprings act like a sway bar, reducing the body roll that makes driving more difficult and dangerous. With these helper springs, driving is safer and easier when it's windy, when your vehicle is rocked by a passing semi, and when you are cornering. The springs help to reduce sway by up to 30 percent. SuperSprings also allow more wheel travel in the rear suspension when they are under load, so they maintain traction and ride comfort better than rubber or polyurethane bumpers. That means they're great for drivers who frequently tow.

Truck before SuperSpringsTruck after SuperSprings

You can also customize the level of support provided by SuperSprings. For most models, the shackles that attach the helper leaf springs to your existing leaf springs have several installation options:

  • For greater support and ride height when your suspension is under a constant load or if you have an older automobile with some spring fatigue, install the helper springs using the upper bolt holes
  • To maintain the factory ride and reduce the effect on your ride height, install using the lower bolt holes
  • To balance support, height, and ride comfort, install using the upper hole on one end and the lower hole on the other

SuperSprings are a maintenance-free, low-cost alternative to air spring systems, which require constant monitoring and air pressure adjustment. These helper leaf springs respond automatically to the load you carry, so there is no crawling under your truck to adjust them. You'll also reduce wear and tear on your suspension, brakes, and tires, which saves you money. The bolt-on installation means that they are easy to fit - no drilling required.

Video Transcript for SuperSprings Custom Suspension Stabilizer and Sway Control Kit Feature Review

Ellen: Hey everybody. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com and we're going to be taking a quick look at the SuperSprings custom sway control and stabilizer kit. This relieves a lot of issues that come up whenever you're putting some extra weight in the back end of your vehicle. Maybe you're putting in some big toolboxes, converting your truck into a work truck, or any time you're just putting a constant load into your vehicle that you're going to have all the time. It affects the overall handling of your vehicle. It doesn't stop as effectively, it can cause the vehicle to bottom out more, and just makes the overall ride experience more uncomfortable.

So by putting these in there, this is basically going to just stiffen up our suspension. It's pretty much just adding an extra leaf spring to your suspension already. If you compare this to other suspension enhancement systems, I think this is a pretty nice way to go, if you have a constant load, again, in your vehicle. If you are going to be varying the load, maybe you're carrying a fifth wheel camper or something like that, where you're going to be putting weight in and taking it back out, something that's adjustable, like air springs would be better. The downside to air springs is that they take a lot of maintenance. You've got to worry about your air lines and keeping air in the bags and worrying about if those air lines are going to get messed up or anything if you're going to be a little bit rougher with your truck or anything like that.

So they can be kind of tedious. A lot of times, it's a good idea to get compressor. Compressors are expensive. So that's something to think about there. If you compare this to other systems that are static, like a solid spring, like a jounce bumper style enhancement, these are nice because they're not going to have that sort of rough engagement like a lot of jounce style springs will. There's usually a gap in between the frame or the axle and the spring itself or the bumper itself.

So whenever it finally hits, you really feel that smack and it can really feel bumpy and uncomfortable. If that spring is constantly engaged, it's usually better, but if you're just putting weight in this all the time, this is a really good solution for you. So, great idea for work trucks or anything else that's going to be under a constant load.So let's take a closer look, talk a little bit more about how this is going to install. Basically, these just go right over the top of your spring pack. So again, there's no cutting or drilling required with these.

They just sit right on top. You do get some of these polyurethane bushings, which kind of sit over that spring pack and make sure that there's no movement for your spring. It comes with two different kinds. It kind of depends on your install as far as which one you'll use, but it does come with instructions on how to do that. Also comes with a bracket that's going to go towards the front end of the spring, or towards the front end of your vehicle. There's a little bit of adjustability as far as how much engagement you get out of these springs. You can see we'll have our bolts for wrapping around our spring pack there, the bottom holes, for a little bit gentler support. So if you just need a little bit of help there, that bottom hole should work out fine. If you find that you need a bit more, you can put it into the top hole on either side. And then if you feel like you needed somewhere kind of in the middle, you can do one low one high or vice versa to kind of give that Goldilocks feel. So you have three different choices as far as how much these are going to provide support.Again, just wraps right over your suspension. You will need to lift the vehicle off the ground a little bit, just that back end, to let the axle hang a little. Nothing too bad. You do want to make sure that you're being safe with that. Do it on a level surface, using jacks, supporting everything, and staying safe while you're getting this installed. But pretty straightforward as far as that goes. And no maintenance, which is always nice. So you just put it in there and forget about it, once you get everything adjusted where you want it to be.This is a custom fit for the 2017 through the current year model of the Ford F-350. That's for the two wheel drive and the four wheel drive. And that's pretty much all there is to it for our look at the custom fit SuperSprings for sway control and stabilizing. As far as weight capacity, they do have a weight capacity of 1900 pounds. That doesn't increase the overall payload or towing capacity of your truck. You still want to go by all of the manufacturer's recommended weights. It's just kind of like having a brace there for helping to lift weight more effectively and safely, rather than helping you to max out at a higher level, if that makes sense. So I hope this has been helpful in deciding if this is the right kit for you. Again, I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. We've got all kinds of accessories for your trucks and trailers, so check them out. Thanks for watching.

2024 Ford F-350 Super Duty

Best product ever purchased

I used the SuperSprings to help support my Slide In Camper for my 2500 Chevy. They support good. I have Timbren installed also, but were bottomed out. After adding the SuperSprings with the Timbren the camper is supported good. The truck sits and rides level

by:

Installing these on a 2020 F250 was easier than I thought it would be. I was able to get the springs on whit the center piece and the front shackle bolted without jacking up the truck. I had to jack the frame up a few inches on each side to get the back shackle bolt through. I put the shackle bolts through the bottom holes since I only need the extra support when I tow. I recommend air / power tools for the shackle nuts and it doesn’t hurt using them for the center bracket u bolts. They are lock nuts and they have a long way to run on for each bolt. I did have to bend my parking brake cable hangar out a bit for one of the shackle bolts to clear the cable. The truck seems to sit a little higher in the back. Maybe an inch or so. The ride empty seemed the same except it felt like it didn’t roll quite as much when turning. Rolling over a lip at the end of our driveway the extra stiffness was noticeable, however. I won’t know how well they really work until I get my fifth wheel hooked up.

by:

This product did exactly what I needed. Lift the RV up to unloaded height. I have not exceeded the 12500 GCWR but the rear end was dragging like it was severely overloaded. It was a very tight fit because the mud flap framing and gas lines were almost in the way. An entire day later with a couple of clamps and sore wrists at max setting fixed the sag perfectly! I wish I had before and after pictures. I can almost fit my head in the wheel where I could not get my arm in before.

Had a problem with parts missing was taken care of and parts were sent right away I buy everything I need for my trucks and trailers from y’all quick shipping and great help

Thank Yoi

They increase the carrying capacity of the stock springs by adding an additional leaf. We drive our van with most of the load above the rear suspension and it was bottoming out on occasion. Works as advertised; no more bottoming out! It is a bit of a struggle to install, so a professional may be needed

by:

No issues with install on a 2023, E350 Class C motorhome.
After chalking the front wheels, I used two 3 ton floor jacks with 13” 6x6 blocks just behind the springs to lift the frame and rear tires off the ground to remove the wheels. For safety, 3 ton jack stands were put under the axles during spring installation
After installing the springs per manufacturer instructions, two 1/2” x 10” pieces of all thread with drilled flat bar were used to compress the front end spring.
With the least amount of preload it raised the back a good inch.
The 800# trailer tongue weight will be the next test to see if more preload is needed for a level ride height.

by:

The Super Springs work great! I pull a 8,500# trailer with a hitch weight of 950# with a 2004 GMC Sierra 1/2 Ton. The truck pulls fine but even with an equalizer hitch still had some sag. The Super Springs were easy to install and leveled the rig. After a year everything still works great.

by:

The install was pretty straightforward and so far they are doing exactly as they should. The packaging was less than desirable though. The box arrived, opened on one end and the springs hanging out of it. Both plastic bags with the smaller parts were ripped open as well. One nut was missing but fortunately I was able to match it up with what I had on hand.

by:

I have used the Superspring product on many Mercedes 2500 Sprinters.
The factory springs typically struggle to support the laden weight of the vehicle after it has been built out.
This helper spring is an excellent option to increase the capacity of the sprung weight in the rear of the vehicle.

by:

These worked great crossing the country last month.

by:

Installed on a 2016 Toyota Tundra. I pull a 28 foot aluminum frame utility trailer. Hauls like a 3/4 ton with super spring. Rides like 1/2 ton without load. I have put 1 ton load on truck with no trailer and the truck drove fine. The front of truck at tires rose 1/2 inch. Installation requires the frame to be lifted off the axel.at rear of vehicle. I like this system better than air shocks as there is no adjustment after installation. I would purchase again.

I got this to prevent bottoming out my truck when towing our travel trailer. Won't know for sure if this actually works until we load up. Having said that, the instructions provided with this are poor and talking with Supersprings tech support was frustrating. As mentioned elsewhere, you will need two "C" clamps to pre-load the spring and I wound up fabricating a 3" extension bracket for the brake lines; neither of which were mentioned in the instructions. I also removed the wheels to provide working space and air tools are definitely the way to go. On my '13 Tundra, the distance between the stock spring pack straps is 40" the same as the distance between the eyes on the Superspring. I was advised that the spring is mounted off-center to avoid conflict with the stock spring straps; however this in not mentioned in the instructions. This placed the Superspring about 4" forward of the center of the axel instead of centered on the axel. (see photos) This seems counterintuitive to me but we'll see. This added 1.5" in height to the rear of the truck. It took me 4 hours to install by my self, including time to fabricate the brake line extensions and dealing with Supersprings staff twice on the phone. During the second call, the tech mentioned that they get a lot of phone calls for Tundra installs, indicating to me that they already know there are issues with the product and instructions. In retrospect, I would look for a new spring pack if I was doing this again. Hopefully my suspicions are unfounded but I'm hanging on to the box just incase. Etrailer was great with the best price anywhere and quick shipping.

by:

This was by far the easiest mod I have made to my 2019 Ford Super Duty King Ranch! Only took 45 minutes start to finish. Didn't even take the wheels off. Took some pressure off of the springs by lifting the rear end a little using the trailer hitch. Used the bottom holes on both ends and only raised the rear of the body 1 inch. Great product!

by:

The kit looks really good but I can’t figure out how to install. Enclosed are two photos showing my van suspension and the parts your sent. The instructions do not show my van with only one spring. Can you advise?????????????? Thanks.

by:

Overall, the installation of the SuperSprings kit went pretty well. The instructions sent with the kit were not all that clear, but the info on etrailer's website saved the day. Can't wait to put the camper back on the truck and see how it rides!

by:

Great product, fast shipping. My only complaint is the package was delivered with both ends of the box ripped open. Luckily no missing components

by:

We purchased the product and it arrived on time, scheduled the mechanic to install the springs at the mechanics shop on step 1 of the instructions that we needed a special bolt kit for an additional $120.00 this was very miss leading. We ordered the additional bolt kit should be delivered on 11/18/24 we will see what is next. It would have been nice to have a pop up or some type of information warning us of the additional bolt kit when ordering the product stating we needed to purchase and additional kit. Im not to impressed with the purchasing part of the SuperSprings experience, hopefully they will be a superior product so I can forget about the bad experience. We will see

by:

Product worked as described. Shipping was quick (etrailer used "air" to my state, then on UPS truck)
Easy to install, not sure why they included 2 sets of polyurethane blocks (only one set fit my truck)
Don't notice any ride difference when set at lowest setting. Raised truck approximately 3/4". East to readjust for more preload if needed.
Combined these Super Springs with Timbren load handlers. So far so good.
Great improvement over stock while maintaining ride quality.

by:

E-trailer agent James helped find trailer tow package that fit my 2011 Ford Transit Connect and provided appropriate install video. You're a huge help James. The install went smoothly without a hitch (lol).

by:

Great product, very clear instructions. I really appreciated the stickers on each spring showing the correct orientation, that took all of the guess work out of it.

Thanks Supersprings for making a great kit and confirming the product would work with the airbags I had installed.

by:

Just put on super springs 2019 f150 for towing a camper that is awful in wind. The installation was easy. Hoping the springs help with a stable ride. I will update when I get the camper out of storage.

by:

2013 Toyota Tundra 4x4. Installation went well in my garage with a medium sized C-Clamp. The ride feels that same as stock. Lifted the rear 1.5" which helped off set the 2.5" lift in the front from Fox 2.0 shocks. I have not hauled a load yet.

by:

Added these springs to my 2500 Silverado to prepare for a slide in camper. They made quite a difference. I did it myself, but two people would be easier. The ride is naturally a little stiffer when empty, but that's the trade off.

by:

i have these on a couple of trucks and they work great.more reliable than air bags
