Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to maintain than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Painful to install because of poor design.

If
you are installing this on an AWD Sienna, don't bother. Take it to a mechanic. They have a lift and all the necessary tools.

I work on everything on my own cars, the only thing I don't do is alignments, because I don't have a machine for that.

But this was an absurd installation. The components are low quality and the design could use some improvement.
The nut with the backing plate you see in the picture is full of paint. I've had 2 kits and they all had the same problem. You might think you can push through the paint with the bolt, but you can't, at least not safely. So you'll need a tap and die kit. Then you'll need a bench vise to hold the nut in.
There are tons of older reviews mentioning this, but the manufacturer must not read reviews because they haven't fixed the issue.

Then you'll need to buy or rent a spring compressor set because the rear axle won't let the suspension down low enough as in the video of the FWD Sienna.
You'll also need some large prybars or wrecking bar, but for one of my springs I had to use a ratchet strap to pull it out, and on another spring I had to use it to pull it back into place. You'll definitely want some solid jack stands if you don't have a lift, like the ones with the locking pin in them, and get some pinch weld pucks, and of course you'll need a floor jack, preferably 2.

But the stupidest part of the design is the thin backing plate on the nut. I can't believe how easy it is to bend as you tighten it. The used kit that was sent to me once was already bent so I know I'm not the only one that has seen this issue. The trick is to put your finger up behind to feel it while you tighten to make sure it doesn't bend. It also has no lip on it to hold it into the upper spring mount, so if it's not tight enough, it could just get in the right position and wiggle out and then your rubber piece would be flopping around in your spring. A simple lip and thicker metal would solve these problems.

Then you have the odd sized 5.5mm allen key for the lower piece. A lot of hex key kits don't come with 5.5mm

If you don't already have all of these tools mentioned, just take it to a mechanic. Even if you do have all of these tools, you might still want to take it to a mechanic, unless you actually like your mechanic. If you have a FWD Sienna, then maybe it's tolerable.

Tried to order part first time, rotten customer service. Called back spoke to manager, much better service received part very quickly. Unfortunately part had bad bolts and or nuts, would not work together. Manager said if I had any problems I could call her number directly and she would take care of it. Have tried to reach her for three days no response. Called regular etrailer number and they want pictures sent to them and then it would have to be reviewed and I was informed I they were behind schedule, so only could guess how long it would take. Sending parts back and demanding refund. Have been doing business with etrailer for many years and this is the thanks I get for being a long time customer. Will not be shopping with etrailer ever again

I just received it today, and asked the shop to install it for me:
1. The two plate washers were missing (NOT in the package)
2. The top 2 nut / plate weld is poor quality. The screws cannot go through the nuts easily
3. The rubble looks pretty cheap and not worth the $XXX I paid for
NOT RECOMMENDED

2008 Toyota Sienna

Very Poor and unsatisfactory. Box arrived unsealed with no attempt to tape box closed from shipper or manufacturer. Hardware is the worst quality control I have seen in 25 years of working with automotive parts. The 3/8 nut welded to the flat bar was painted inside 75% of the threads and the nut and bolt are stripping trying to clean up the threads. The welding and painting is very poor quality on all parts. Paint shows bare steel in many locations. The nuts and bolts are plain steel and not protected from corrosion at all except where they got paint from the flat bar inside the threaded nut!

My van never scraped my driveway, but comes very close. The steering was effected by power a wheelchair in the trunk. The kit gave me 1 more inch of clearance. Installation was was easy with a spring compressor. However I needed to tap the nut on the T nut plate insert for both sides. The nut was not threading on to retain the rubber spring until I tapped it.

2011 Toyota Sienna

I did not encounter any issues with the install on my 2011 Sienna awd. However, in order to do the install you need a spring compressor, which I did not feel comfortable with so I ended up taking my van to a 4x4 shop. I like the do nothing/maintenance free aspect of the kit over airbags.

by:
2007 Toyota Sienna

This did the trick. My 2007 Toyota Sienna rides higher when I tow my popup. I installed myself at my friends house. Do both sides at once to make it easier. When both wheels (hubs) are off the ground and both rear shocks are removed it makes taking the spring out alot easier. We struggled with the first spring because we didn't do this.

by:
2012 Toyota Sienna

Use my van for deliveries from time to time. It feels more stable with the Timbren system. There is less sway under heavy loads and the suspension doesn't drop as much. Would buy again if needed.

2008 Toyota Sienna

I installed these on a customers Toyota Sienna and to be truthful I didn't think he would be happy with them. The next day he had seven adults in the van to go on their weekly hike and when I asked him how he likes them he couldn't be happier. So apparently they do what they are supposed to.

I purchased the Timbren suspension booster to reduce the sag when pulling our pop up trailer behind our 2010 Sienna. It works well for that. The Sienna rides quite firm however even when we are not pulling the trailer.

by:
2006 Toyota Sienna

This is a great product. I installed it on my 2006 Toyota Sienna with new shocks. We tow a pop-up camper and would bottom out sometimes. It also improved the way the van drove with a load attached to it. Well worth the money.

by:

Out of the box I was not impressed with this product. I had the spring removed from the van upon their arrival. After looking at the manufactures instructions, which were minimal. And a size up, holding the parts in place. There was no way the springs were going back in after this thing was installed, even after compression.
Go for the air bags, which for me have worked well in the past on other vehicles. There adjustable, and have longevety and installed without spring removal. Sorry I tried something different.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I used this on my Isuzu tow truck. The blocks in and of themselves are fine, they support the weight. Here's the problem: They are pre-loaded, meaning that they always touch between the frame and the rear axle. As you load the vehicle this puts more pressure on the frame in this 5" area where the blocks are. The springs have not yet taken as much weight as they normally would. Now, all this upward pinpoint pressure bends the frame. This is what happened to me on my rollback tow truck. After many hours and now double plating the frame all is well again, but a tremendous amount of work. Yes, the blocks are fine, but the result of installing this product resulted in a bent frame. The vehicle was not overloaded and was within the GVWR.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I really like these Timbren bump stops. I think the best thing about them is the simplicity, both how they work and how easy the install was. I bought these when I added a dump insert (similar to a salt spreader) into my 2019 F-250. I have loaded this truck heavy before with dirt and the truck sagged tremendously and had a lot of body roll. To prevent this with the now added dump insert, I installed these. Super easy to install! Took maybe 30 min. It reduces body roll and seems to improve the ride depending on how loaded the truck is.

One unfortunate consequence to the install is that the Timbrens brought to light that I have a weak leaf spring on my passenger side, which was suspect previously.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase and would buy again!

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Product is high quality, all parts fit well and I didn’t have to force anything. High strength thick steel, and the jounce bumpers are seriously heavy duty. I haven’t had a load on the truck (98 Ram 3500) since install a few days ago, so they haven’t touched the base plates yet.

One thing I’m concerned with is the jounce bumpers are touching and are right up against the lift blocks and U bolts. I’m unsure of the longevity these bumpers will have after a heavy load is on them and they are constantly rubbing on the hardware. Also, as the load gets heavier they expand outward as they flatten out so I’m also concerned with if that will push my lift blocks outward and mess with the suspension.

I’m prepping for a slide in camper and when I get it I will have to take a look and see what effects that weight has on the suspension, the bumpers, and ride quality.

Comments
I am not sure when I will be able to have a load on it to confirm, as I do not have a camper just yet. I am currently working on upgrading the suspension in preparation for one. Is there an alternative similar solution, other than airbags - as I dont want those, that can be run? With a similar weight capacity? Kind of interesting Timbren hasnt run into this issue before with the older Ram 3500s. Wonder if this is somehow unique to my truck? All the rear components are original OEM, so it seems kind of strange.

You mentioned that the jounce bumpers were touching up against the lift blocks without a load in the truck and I wondered if you could send a picture of the installation?
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 01/05/2022
Comments
I do have additional questions for you. Is the top picture showing how the springs look with a loaded weight? Have you already installed your slide in camper? I wanted to see if the top bracket were touching as well? The manufacturer is trying to determine if a smaller diameter spring would help or not
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 01/05/2022
Comments
Both pictures are right after installation with a completely unloaded bed. Since installation, I have not had weight in the bed, so I can not 100 say if the top brackets would touch the U bolts or leaf springs. But from looking at it just now, it appears the top bracket would just barely touch the U bolts with a loaded bed, and would definitely touch if there was side to side movement with a loaded bed like going over a speed bump, pot holes, or uneven terrain.
-- comment by: Jimmy - 01/05/2022
Comments
I did hear back from Timbren. Currently there is not a bracket that would be narrower that they can offer. When loaded if the brackets interfere with the smaller spring, then it may be advisable to return the kit.

I was researching if I had an alternative and I realized that I needed to confirm your set up. Do you have the 3500 cab and chassis - if yes was it always a cab and chassis - or do you have the 3500 pickup? I am under the impression that you have the pick up since you want to use a slide in camper however, I wanted to be sure.
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 01/05/2022
Comments
It is the 3500 pickup. Thanks!
-- Etrailer Expert Jimmy - 01/05/2022
Comments
I believe I now know what happened and I should have asked about the truck before now. The TDRTT3500 that was ordered is used for the cab and chassis model versus the pickup and this is leading to the fitment issues you have seen. I do have two options to offer for the 1998 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup including a different Timbren application. They are part # TDR3500
Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System
$373.07
and part # SSA25

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Highly recommend for anyone towing. Leaf springs were flattened out prior to install. Swapped the bump stops out for Timbrens in a campground before making a 1000+ mile trip home. They work amazing leveled the truck out while towing and absorb the bad bumps.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Installed on 98 Ram 3500 pickup. Haven't put a load on it yet, but it installed very easily and fits well. Driver's side spring brackets were a bit harder to install than the passenger side, but still overall easy.

One con was the powder coat finish was worn off in spots right after opening the box. Not sure if the packaging is to blame or what, but in general the packaging never seems to be that great on the etrailer products I've ordered (just brown packing paper).

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I have a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 pick up truck (elevation package) in which I added a 3.5 inch ROUGH COUNTRY KNUCKLE LIFT KIT with Front Struts. The rear distance between the bump stop's metal cup just under the frame and the the rear axle is 8.25 inches with an empty truck bed and a quarter tank of gas. I gave the professional this information on my truck and what I needed; they e mailed back the kit with only 1.5 additional spacers on each side of the truck, Ok. I still came up with 2.25 inch space with an empty truck bed on both sides. I feel More TIMBREN PRODUCTS WOULD be SOLD if websites carried information All together for the average people to buy at their finger tips. It would have been easier for me if the following were all grouped together for my truck :
TIMBREN Rear Suspension Enhancement System
TGMRCK15S (that has 3/8 bushing) which is actual about 4.5 inches not 5inches in
height.
FOR TRUCKS with LIFT KITS spacers are required with the same 3/8 bushings

1 inch spacer (that has 3/8 bushing) A25723-90AHOO
1/2 inch spacer (that has a 3/8 bushing) TA25722-90POO
I required an additional 1 inch spacer on both sides than I was e mailed. It would also be easier if I could buy the additional bolts grouped with my additional 2.5 spacing on both sides of my truck on the web site, than going to the hardware store. I would pay the additional cost. So all together for my 3.5 ROUGH COUNTRY LIFT, I required 2.5 inch spacers on both sides with the 4.5 height kit which = 7 inches . I haul my 4 wheeler in the bed and broke a level spring years ago. On other occasions I place fire wood in the truck bed. TIMBREN is the way to go, it will be there when I put weight in the bed of truck; be it a 4 wheeler or wood. Friends of mine have air bag systems that leak over time and are much more in price. You can not go wrong with TIMBREN. When installing, remove salt and sand near top of original bump stop bolt, apply PB blast wait 10 minutes use a breaker bar with easy removal. Go to the hardware store to get longer bolts. When installing have to jack up the back of the truck under the towing package to get space to use tools to add new TIMBREN PRODUCTS.

Comments
Awesome for hauling four wheeler in bed and for hauling load of fire wood in the bed, no broken leaf springs and no sag

Sounds like your Sienna would benefit from some rear suspension like the Air Lift # AL60732 or the Timbren # TTORSEN04. The Draw-Tite hitch # 75237 on the 2009 Toyota Sienna model should sit at a height of 11-1/2 inches from the ground to top of the inside of the receiver with no cargo or passengers. On page 542 of your owner's manual, I was able to find a chart with your vehicle's weight capacity, this includes occupants and luggage. I have linked the page and weight capacities to this...

  • How to Reduce Sag On a 2013 Toyota Sienna When Pulling a Trailer
There are a few options to help reduce the sag on your 2013 Toyota Sienna when pulling a trailer. I recommend Air Lift AirLift 1000 Air Helper Springs for Coil Springs - Rear Item # AL60732. These are air bags that fit inside your factory coils. Instillation is fairly simple. The air spring can be adjusted to a maximum of 35 psi and a minimum of 5 psi with a load leveling capacity of 1000 lbs. You can adjust the air pressure in the bag depending on the weight to bring the back of the vehicle...

  • Helper Spring Recommendations for 2013 Toyota Sienna Being Used as Tow Vehicle and Camper
Because you'll be towing at times, it sounds like the load on the suspension will vary from trip to trip. Because of this, I'd recommend going with the AirLift # AL60732 air helper springs. The springs install inside your existing coil springs as shown in the linked video, and can inflate from 5 to 35 psi, offering up to 1000 lbs of additional support. The adjustability is a great feature if the weight of the loads you'll be carrying will vary. None of the available options will lift the...

  • Rear Axle Firestone Air Bag Suspension Enhancement Kit for 2014 Toyota Sienna 2WD
Van-style vehicles like the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey do sit fairly low in the rear end. By the time you add the presence of a trailer hitch, load some cargo and passengers, and apply the hitched trailer's tongue weight (TW) to the hitch ball you can absolutely find yourself looking for some extra support for the rear suspension. The linked page shows you the options for your 2014 Sienna 2WD and these include both air bag kits # AL60732 and # F4155 and a rubber jounce spring kit...

  • Transmission Cooler and Suspension Enhancement for a 2011 Toyota Sienna
The information on how much weight your 2011 Toyota Sienna can carry should be in the owners manual. From what I found the front wheel drive version can carry 1,325 pounds to 1,660 pounds inside the vehicle. The all wheel drive version can carry 1,190 pounds to 1,375 pounds inside the vehicle. A rough estimate based on the weights you have given is a total of around 1,400 pounds. If you have a front wheel drive model then you should be fine. But on an all wheel drive model you will have...

  • Should I Install Air Bags Or Jounce Stopper Springs On My 2014 Toyota Sienna?
In order to improve the towing experience with your 2014 Toyota Sienna, I recommend the Air Lift 1000 Air Helper Springs for Coil Springs - Rear # AL60732. With your vehicle you likely won't be towing all the time, and this system is perfect for that because you can adjust the bags according to your load and it will not affect your unloaded ride quality. On the other hand, jounce springs like Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TTORSEN04 could possibly affect your unloaded ride...

  • Parts Needed to Prevent Jerking Feeling When Towing Enclosed Trailer with a 2016 Toyota Sienna
To accommodate a rough ride in your 2016 Toyota Sienna you can use the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TTORSEN04 which helps to prevent body roll and absorb shock. Since you mentioned it occurs while towing I am wondering if the jerking feeling you are describing is because of trailer sway. In that case you would want a Weight Distribution (WD) system like the Equal-i-zer # EQ37060ET which is specifically designed to level your towing setup and prevent trailer sway from crosswinds...

  • Recommended Towing Setup and Rear Suspension Enhancement For 2006 Toyota Sienna AWD Towing 15' Boat
I would be happy to help! It sounds like you are adding 250lbs of weight to your 2006 Toyota Sienna AWD to convert it into a camper, and are wondering if that added weight plus the weight of your 15' boat trailer will cause too much sagging of the rear suspension. Since you mentioned only 125lbs of that will be over the rear axle of your Sienna, and the tongue weight of your boat trailer is 225lbs you will likely have some rear suspension sag. With that said the Timbren # TTORSEN04...
