Malone Crossbar Specs

Folding Carrier with Padded Arms and Base

Malone cradleMalone cradle front view

The Malone FoldAway-J holds your kayak on its side, leaving plenty of room on your crossbars for another kayak rack, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier. Padding on the arms and base protect your kayak from scratches and scuffs. The arms are adjustable to perfectly fit different size kayaks. They also fold down to increase overhead clearance for parking in your garage.

Load Straps and Bow/Stern Tie-Downs

J-Style Kayak Carrier Load Straps Installed

The carrier includes 2 cam-buckle straps and integrated strap holders to secure your kayak to the rack. The strap holders attach to the top of the carrier to keep the straps in place while loading your kayak. A set of bow/stern tie-downs are also included to secure the kayak to the front and back of your vehicle. If your vehicle doesn't have any tie-down points, you can get an anchor kit (sold separately) which will let you create anchor points in the creases of your vehicle's hood and hatch.

Tool-Free, Clamp-On Installation

Malone cradle folded down

The carrier clamps to most crossbars without the need for tools. Simply set the rack on your crossbars, slide the mounting brackets over the bolts, and secure them with the T-knobs.

Good burly racks. More substantial than most. I like that they have two crossbar attachments per rack. I was missing brackets for one of the two sets of racks I bought. Customer support (Joanne) did a terrific job to make sure I got replacements before I took off for some sea kayaking in BC.

by:

I have a 4 by 8 trailer that I carry 3 kayaks. The Malone fold away carrier folds down that makes loading the middle kayak easier. It is sturdy and well made

by:

Carrier works great for my two fishing kayaks. I have used a sharpie to mark where the typical spots are that I use because it can be a challenge to know the exact locations when you fold them up and down. If it had markings on them from the factory or numbering it would be much easier (minor thing). Durability seems to be good so far!

by:

Good product marred by a few unusable fasteners. etrailer did a great job getting me replacement parts right away.

by:

l am disappointed as the rubber cushioning has already worn away after one summer of usage

by:

The racks were easy to install and appear that they will work good, have not had the chance to use them yet.

by:

Kayak season won't start here until early June since all the lakes are frozen, so I won't know how the racks work until then. Thank you for your prompt shipping.

The carrier was easy enough to install. As my wife and I are in our 70s, even with a 2 step ladder it was difficult to get the kayaks onto the crossover SUV top. Even with both of us holding up the kayak we had trouble with the straps falling out of place while we were attempting to hold the kayak in place.

by:

I purchased this to transport kayaks. I used them for the first time, and all went well. Since all kayaks are built differently, you will need to tweek how you load your equipment. I will have to continue to work on this. But as I said everything went well and everything returned safely. The purchase process and delivery went well as always with etrailer. Great company to work with.

by:

Great product….e trailer has been excellent for all my orders

by:

Good quality, very easy to install. just got it yesterday, so haven't tried the kayak on it yet,but do not expect any problems. I would order from trailer again!

by:

easy install looks like they will work very well.

by:

Great customer service!

by:

easy piecy!

by:

Just put them together and am ready to go. They are great quality at a great price

by:

Omg what great service! Customer service person I talked with was excellent and shipping was really fast.

by:

  • Does Malone FoldAway Kayak Carrier Work With Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack
Hi Ken, Yep, I can verify for you the Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Carrier # MAL98FR is 100% compatible with the Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack # MPG215. The FoldAway will clamp right onto the AirFlow2 roof rack very easily, and the carrier even comes with tie-downs so you don't have to get those separately.

  • Trailer Hitch, Bike Rack & Roof Rack For 2023 Subaru Forester
We can get your 2023 Subaru Forester set up, and from how I'm reading this you want a trailer hitch receiver and hitch-mounted bike rack, along with a roof rack and kayak carrier. Since it sounds like the hitch and bike rack are top priorities, we'll start there: - etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e83ZR - Kuat Sherpa 2.0 Bike Rack - Black # SH22B, Pearl # SH22P, or Gray # SH22G The hitch is a fit for your '23 Forester and is a bolt-on installation that also has good bumper and ground...

  • Is There a Load Assist Option for Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Roof Rack
I do have an option for you but there's not much you can do load assist wise for the setup you have now, the Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Roof Rack part # MAL98FR. The Telos XL Load Assist for Malone Kayak Carriers part # MPG351XL is probably your best option but in order to use them you'd likely need a new set of j-style cradles, the Malone DownLoader Kayak Roof Rack part # MPG114MD. In a lot of cases, you can get away without new j-style cradles using the Universal Roof Rack Adapter Kit for...

  • Measurement Between Mounting Holes of Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Carrier
I reached out to the manufacturer, Malone, and was able to get the measurement you were looking for on the Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Carrier with Tie Downs # MAL98FR. According to Malone, the distance between the mounting holes on the photo you sent is 2-3/4 inches center to center. Another thing you'll want to keep in mind is that the FoldAway-J is designed to fit crossbars that are up to 3-1/2" wide x 1-1/2" tall. I have added a link below to a video review for you to check out as well...

  • Kayak Carrier Recommended for Old Town Heron Kayaks on Yakima Y08107 Rack and Roll Trailer
For a fairly economical way to transport your three kayaks on the # Y08107 Rack and Roll trailer, I'd recommend going with the Malone FoldAway # MAL38FR for two kayaks and the # MAL98FR for the third. I looked up your kayaks, and found that Old Town lists the weight of the solo as being about 40 lbs with a length of 9-1/2 feet and the tandems as being 60 lbs each with a length of 13-1/2 feet. The kayaks sizes and weights would be compatible with both the Rack and Roll trailer and the carriers...

  • Can I Use J-Style Carriers in Conjunction with the Rhino-Rack # RTL002 on My 2016 Subaru Outback?
Technically, this setup might work. However, there are some caveats. Firstly, the Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Carrier with Tie Downs - J-Style # MAL98FR is not confirmed to be large enough to clamp around the crossbars of the Rhino-Rack T-Load Hitch Mounted Load Assist and Support Bar for 2" Hitches # RTL002. For this reason, I recommend using one of the Rhino-Rack 2 Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs - J-Style - Folding # S512-S512X instead. This j-style carrier is confirmed to fit larger crossbars...

  • Can a Pelican Trailblazer 100NXT Kayak Use a Malone J-Style Kayak Carrier on a 2012 Subaru Forester
From what I could find on your Pelican Trailblazer 100NXT kayak, you should have no problem transporting it on your 2012 Subaru Forester using a Malone J-Style Kayak carrier like the Malone FoldAway # MAL98FR. The Pelican Trailblazer 100NXT kayak has a pretty standard shaped hull and weighs 36 lbs., therefore the Malone FoldAway Kayak Carrier # MAL98FR will work to carry your kayak. The # MAL98FR has a weight capacity of 75 lbs. You will need crossbars on your Forester to use the Malone...

  • Will the Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Roof Rack Fit the Factory Crossbars of a 2003 Ford Expedition?
Yes, it will. The Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Roof Rack w/ Tie-Downs item # MAL98FR fits crossbars up to 3-1/2" wide. You will have no problem using these on your Expedition's factory crossbars.

  • Can I Fit 2 Sets of Malone FoldAway 5 Kayak Carriers on My 58-Inch Crossbars?
Yes. Since the Malone FoldAway 5 # MAL38FR takes up only 19-1/2 inches of crossbars space when deployed or folded, you will be able to use 2 of these carriers on your 58-inch Malone AirFlow 2 # MPG216 crossbars. However, since you are only looking to transport 3 kayaks, I recommend using a single FoldAway 5 # MAL38FR with the FoldAway # MAL98FR. This will ultimately save crossbar space and is the more economical setup.

  • Does The Malone FoldAway J Kayak Carrier Fit Inno Aero Crossbars?

The Malone carrier fits crossbars up to 3-1/2" wide and up to 1-1/2" tall; since the Inno bars measure 3-1/8" tall and 1-1/8" wide, you will not have an issue with this setup. • Can I Carry Three Kayaks On My 2012 Kia Sorento With 54" Cross Bars
Yes, you should be able to carry 3 kayaks on the roof of your 2012 Kia Sorento, provided you do not exceed the weight limit of the roof. The Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Carrier with Tie Downs - J-Style - Folding - Side Loading, part # MAL98FR, and the Malone FoldAway-5 Kayak, SUP, and Canoe Carrier with Tie Downs - J-Style - Folding - Side Loading, part # MAL38FR, both have a 19-1/2" footprint. • Roof Rack Options For Hauling Two Kayaks On A 2022 Subaru Forester
Saddles/racks typically have some sort of cushion or rubber to help prevent sliding and offer multiple tie-down points so they are typically better than just laying the kayak onto the crossbar. The Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack # MPG215 has 50" crossbars. If you subtract 34" from that you're left with 16" which is a bit smaller that most J-Style kayak carriers so you'd likely not have enough room. Since the Malone # MAL98FR angles up you might be able to clear the fishing kayak, but this would...

  • Malone LowBed MicroSport Trailer MPG464-LB Ability To Carry Curvy Kayak On Their Side
The fenders on the Malone LowBed MicroSport Trailer # MPG464-LB are going to sit almost flush with crossbars. Do remember that the height of the Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Carrier # MAL98FR will give you over the top of the crossbars and the fact that the rear crossbar is so close to the fender will reduce the chance of your kayak hitting the fenders. The crossbar spread is also adjustable from 44" to 63" allowing you to be more on the center of the kayak so it will not sit as low on the trailer.

The Malone FoldAway-J # MAL98FR fits a maximum crossbar size of 3-1/2" x 1-1/2" so it will also fit with the rack. We do have some J-style kayak carriers that fit factory crossbars, like what you would have on your 2004 Ford Excursion. If you are trying to mount the Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Carrier # MAL98FR or the Malone J-Pro2 Kayak Carrier # MPG117MD past the feet of the Malone AirFlow 2 - 50" # MPG215, you will need at least about 4 inches of crossbar space after the feet in order to accommodate the bottom bracket of the carriers.
