Is this right for you? Product Expert Lindsey S says:

Yes, if you:

  • Have a trailer with an underslung coupler and 350 lbs – 550 lbs of tongue weight
  • Only experience relatively minor trailer sway
  • Hate the loud scraping and popping of other hitches with built-in sway control

No, if you:

  • Have a trailer with a C-channel frame or a crossmember that could interfere with the clamp-on brackets
Shank fits 2" hitches and offers up to an 8" rise and a 2" drop. Clamp-on system uses optimal points of tension to help prevent sway while it balances your trailer's load for a more level ride. n/an/a

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Unique Features of Blue Ox SwayPro

Blue Ox SwayPro Rotating Latch Brackets

Other weight distribution systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. With the SwayPro, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Another feature of the SwayPro is the easy-to-use head. The required pitch is already built into the head, so the only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height. No additional, fine-tune adjustment is needed, which means no hard-to-access washers or difficult-to-use thumbscrew.

Built-In Tension Stops Sway

Blue Ox SwayPro System with Built-In Sway Control Hooked Up

The SwayPro offers four points of built-in sway control. Within the head assembly, the trunnions are designed to hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly force your trailer in line. At the other end of this weight distribution system, the rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible. In addition, the basic design of the brackets keeps much of the length of the lift chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. So each chain is held more stable than in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed. This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from shifting side to side. Furthermore, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage the system.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

This is a good system, though it can require some tinkering when hitching up. Sometimes it's super easy (connect the bars to the receiver, loop the links to the clamps, and rotate until it clicks into place, done!) while occasionally as the ground varies one bar may resist getting loaded and you have to find a level spot to adjust it. We have found the need to change frequently which link its cranked to. In fact, a couple times I've gone to our standard setting but later had to pull over and crank a couple extra links tighter to keep the sway down. That said, it fit all the criteria for the weight range, frame mount points, etc. and has worked over multiple trips and several hundred miles so far.

I would say the powder coating has been pretty durable, there is a bit of rust developing on the clamps where there's been contact with the chains for one year. But the bars, links, and receiver are looking fine overall.

Overall, it wasn't the first model we had our eye on but it fit the situation and we are fairly happy with how it all turned out.

Shipped as promised. Came with everything. Installed per excellent instructions.
Works very well on 21 chevy tahoe towing 6000lb 25 ft travel trailer.
Works as advertised. Havnt been in crosswinds, but trucks passing and meeting, hitch has good control. Load leveling works excellent.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I have used my Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW Item #BXW1000 now for the past year towing our Airstream 27FB with a Ford F150 over 5000 miles and six weeks of road trips.

For comparison, I had used Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control hitches on three prior travel trailers over eight years - including a prior 27FB.

For comparable levels of weight distribution, I have found:
1. The sway control with the Blue Ox is more of a dampening of sway - making it tolerable, while the Reese seemed to eliminate the sway from starting in the first place. A noticeable difference with crosswinds and passing semis at highway speeds.
2. Tightening and loosening the torsion bars with the supplied wrench and rotating cam of the Blue Ox is more stressful and unpredictable than using the lever pipe and lift bracket for the cam of the Reese. I bought a longer torsion bar and socket to replace the supplied wrench which helps (see photo).
3. While the Reese torsion bars and cams require routine topical application of grease, the Blue Ox torsion bar swivel attachments (see photo) require a grease gun to keep lubricated which is a nuisance.
4. Routine wear on the paint of the Blue Ox cam (see photo) adds rust as a maintenance problem that I didn't have with the Reese systems.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

The blue ox pro weight distribution looks extremely well built. However, When I ordered the kit, I believe it said it did not come with a ball. So I ordered a ball. I now have an extra ball that I don't need. UPS delivered the box and the box was crushed, two holes punctured into the box. Fortunately for me, all the pieces were still in the box. Past that, I'm excited to pull my trailer and see how it does.

After a year, the hitch assembly is incredible. You dont know how well it is constructed until you see other hitches and the thin material used. I would buy again in a heart beat.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I bought the blue ox weight distribution hitch as an upgrade from my original weight distribution hitch that I purchased from Harbor freight. What a difference!

Comments
Game Changer. I love my Blue Ox WDH. It has worked flawlessly since I purchased and installed it on my trailer. I have towed my 30 foot travel trailer in all kinds of weather including windy conditions and the hitch works great. I used to tow a 22 foot travel trailer with a Harbor Freight WDH, and that trailer would sway without an additional and noisy anti sway bar. The Blue Ox doesnt need one, and even though my new trailer is 8 feet longer, it does not sway much at all. Not only does it keep my 8500 lb trailer straight, it is easy to hook up. I dont dread hooking up like I used to.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I specifically asked what bars to buy and answered questions about dry weight, tongue weight and max trailer weight. I was steered to 1000 lb bars even though that was not even 10% of max trailer weight when 12-15% of max weight is the typical range for tongue weight. I ended up replacing with the next step which was 1500 lb bars. You gave me the wrong answer and it cot me another set of bars and left me no way of recovering what I spent for wrong bars. Bad advice=bad customer service. The only reaso I gave 2 stars is you delivered on time to my rv dealer as instructed.

Comments
Depending on the total tongue weight of the trailer you will want to a weight distribution system where your trailers loaded and unloaded weight will fall into the range of the bars. This system has a tongue weight range of 750 lbs - 1,000 lbs. The next system up will be part number part # BXW1500
Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - 15,000 lbs GTW, 1,500 lbs TW

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

After much research, I chose this Blue Ox. Liked this style over the others for it's simple use and less clips to lose. My issue was the rear of my KIA was sagging allowing the camper nose to drop. Which in turn made the camper sway. Very simple installation. The object is tweaking it to get both the tow vehicle and camper level and to line the chain up with the bracket mounted on the frame of the trailer/camper. We've taken it out on 1 short trip so far and it has definitely been an improvement. It is quite heavy, but just about all brands are. Read others that said the ball was not included..... mine was! Very pleased with my decision.

This W/D hitch does everything it is supposed to do. It was very easy to set up and my new trailer tows like a dream. Just a hint-- I mark the chains with some paint so I know where to set them.

After one year the hitch still is working great! I did some minor chain adjustments to my original setup and it works better now I went one link tighter

Towing a 29ft Keystone 7000lb trailer. A LOT quieter than the solid bar style hitch. Easier to set into place too. Takes a little getting use to when attaching the chains in the proper direction and releasing them. Great weight distribution. Fairly good sway control. Happy with the purchase.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

The performance of what it is supposed to do, Weight Distribution and Sway Control, is great.
The parameters which is will be able to be installed on your particular setup is cumbersome and usually involves buying alternate parts. V Nose Trailers also provide challenges (alternate parts). Recommend having a shop install it on both the trailer and vehicle so they work out the exact equipment needed.
The overall longevity of this product -- when left on the trailer -- is leaving me wanting. This equipment does not like to be left in the weather. You will want to uninstall it, clean it, lubricate it and store it in a controlled environment. Oxidation is strong with this equipment.

Comments
You will definitely want to grease the 2 grease zerks inside the head assembly often. As well as lubricate any moving part that is in the elements. For more rust prevention tips, see the attached help article:

Easy installation after purchasing a couple of specific tools: A big adjustable wrench, a Torque wrench and a 1 1/2 socket to be able to remove and reinstall the hitch ball.
Easy to follow instructions.
Plan to test it during a trip this weekend.

The hitch came very quickly and was well packaged. I was surprised to find an upgraded chain tool and 20k lbs ball already attached to the hitch. The reason I have four stars was there was not option to select a longer shank length. So, $[XX] dollars later I was able to get an extended shank for my 3/4 ton truck.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I had a question about a "used" version of the BXW1000, so I jumped on the chat with customer service and they were able to answer my questions about what "used" was considered (in this case, damaged packaging/cosmetic defects, nothing structural and the hitch was not used and returned used for resale).

I also asked if all the parts would be in the box, and of course the answer was yes.

I recieved the hitch in very short order (and I received order/shipping updates). The outer box had a good amount of clear packaging tape, but was intact. Upon inspection, the hitch looked (as it was) brand new, and the only blemish I noticed was some overspray from the paint in two of the threaded bolt holes, which was easily removed with a small screwdriver.

Thanks to etrailer for a very smooth ordering/shipping process and to your excellent customer service representatives!

This hitch is working well! This Blue Ox hitch was the ONLY one for my needs. It fit the Winnebago Hike camper without modification. The dealer wanted to modify the camper's tool box for their installation, with a labor charge of $800 bucks! The only thing I had to do is move the tool box up about an inch off the mount for installation only. Them it fit back in place as factory mounted. Great for controlling the weight distribution and sway of the single-axel camper. Thanks!

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

No matter what product you end up buying from etrailer your going to be impressed by their customer service. I purchased the SwayPro Blue Ox BXW1500 for towing a trailer with 1000lbs of tongue weight when empty using a 2018 Nissan Titan. I have never been able to actually level my pickup before with other hitches that I’ve used. I can now level the pickup and trailer to within 1/2”. The BXW1500 was very easy to install. Hookup is simple and easy. When towing the hitch works silently and offers very good vehicle control. The parts of the hitch that you handle have no grease on them. I would recommend theBXW1500 for anyone experiencing truck squat while towing or is tired of a noisy hitch system.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I have been using the Blue Ox SwayPro WD Hitch for 1,500 tongue weight on our 30' Arctic Fox travel trailer for one year now. No regrets as this hitch has been an easy to setup and use and it seems to do it's job nicely. Due to the height of our trailer's hitch I ordered a Reese Titan Weight Dist Shank to use with the SwayPro and the pair work great together.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I’m not very happy with my purchase. The weight distribution hitch I purchased does not fit on my trailer. There is a welded support bracket right where the hitch bracket is supposed to go 29 inches back on my trailer. Can the bracket go further back or does it need to go right above the chain? I’ve attached a photo of my issue.

Comments
Yes this blue ox weight distribution system part # BXW1006 does require the brackets to be positioned 29 inches from the hitch ball. Since you have a support bar where the bracket does need to be positioned this weight distribution system will not work for your trailer. I recommend the equalizer system part # EQ37100ET
Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW
$825.00
. The sway control brackets on the equalizer system can be positioned 27 inches to 32 inches back from the coupler. It handles tongue weight from 700 to 900 pounds and will still allow for backing up. It also includes the 2 5/16 inch ball and shank.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I had the unfortunate experience with having your new airstream 20' taken out by a hydroplaning car last month. The airstream rolled right and on to its side, and the hitch released keeping our Suburban from rolling. The stabilizer bars and chains maintained the trailer connection and eased the stop with the rear tires of ground. The hitch bent the receiver on the truck, and the only damage appeared to be one " sprung" spring bar. A good result from a bad experience!

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

Let's be honest, the Blue Ox is a bit expensive compared to other brands. I bought this because it was the only one with a 3,500 lb range.

I used it with a vehicle that was not rated for a weight distribution system (Subaru Outback), but this worked beautifully. Never a sway, and very sure-footed on the highway.

Connecting this is easier than just about any other brand. The cam system that simply clicks/ratchets the chains is so easy to use. It's also fast to disconnect at your campsite and drive away with just your vehicle. I found that in a pinch (timed myself), I could connect or disconnect everything in about 90 seconds.

This made a huge difference, with an ordinary hitch just getting the trailer home from the dealer was a not-so-fun drive. With this hitch the trailer tows straight and smooth at any speed. A sway control hitch is an important piece of safety equipment and I recommend this one highly.

  • Using Weight Distribution System on Trailer with Underslung Coupler
While we do not currently carry Tuff Tow weight distribution systems, from what I could find they do not appear that they are designed for use on trailers with an underslung coupler like what you have. Using longer chains may help to reach the extra distance required to attach to the brackets while also keeping the ball level, but this may in turn create a ground clearance problem. Typically an underslung coupler requires a specific weight distribution head designed for it or a system that...
