Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Fastway e2 Sway Control

The two points of sway control within the e2 are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight-distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system.

The direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the e2 system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the e2 uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway-control system.

I bought this Trunnion hitch specifically for weight distribution as I have a lot of tongue weight on my trailer. It does a great job of putting some of that weight back on the trailer. You must check the tension bolt before every trip as it work’s loose and could ruin your day if it came out.

by:

Very happy with the product quality, instructions, and performance of the hitch system. I would highly recommend to anyone needing this type of hitch.

Great, no complaints, durable, and reliable, used my 3/4 drive socket set for installation

by:

etrailer service is great and the customer service is awesome. The only gripe is the packaging and is not really etrailers fault. UPS ans Fed Ex beat the living daylights out of thier shipments. I am lucky to have all the parts and the hitch was scratched up pretty bad from the abused shipping. Maybe if the boxes were shrink wrapped they would hold up better in shipment. Very fast shipping and I will be using etrailer in the future!

by:

Fantastic hitch but make sure you take some time to get it set up. I had to assemble/disassemble/reassemble it a few times to get it set up correctly. Also, I had to go to my local trailer shop to properly torque the hitch ball. Not only did I not have a 1 7/8" socket, but I couldn't torque it to 450ft lbs.
Now that it is installed and dialed it it works great.

by:

They work great. It took awhile to find a wrench big enough to install the 2 5/16in ball hitch and the parts associated with this system. I didn't have any sockets that size. But, after about two hours, everything was working great.

by:

I am very pleased with my Fastway Weight Distribution System. This order was delayed due to the supplier having problems delivering the product but Noahe kept me informed during the hole process. I will definitely purchase items from etrailer in the future.

by:

etrailer had always been great to work with. When the package tracking hadn’t updated in a few days the CS at etrailer assured me everything was good. Sure enough that same day the tracker showed that my package was only 3 hours away and would be here the next day.
The e2 hitch is really easy to set up and I’m very pleased with my purchase and would go through etrailer agin to purchase it.

by:

Love it! Easy to follow install instructions. Simple / quick hook up and removal.
Fortunately we recieved all parts as the box was completely blown out upon arrival with bolts, washers, and trunnion bars falling out across my driveway. UPS really does not care about the cargo they carry, but I know if parts were missing that etrailer would make it right!

by:

Excellent customer service and very helpful in making a decision about the correct hitch. Delivery was fast and followup by Madison was perfect. Pat R

Everything had gone very well till my box arrived damaged and most of the parts to my new equalizer system were missing from the box.

by:

I’ve been using the Fastway e2 for a year, now, and have found it to be reliable and super easy to use. The setup is logical and ongoing use involves just a few steps and I’m on the road with travel trailer in tow. I would highly recommend this particular distribution and sway control system.

by:

The solution to dangerous issues. This system resolved many of my towing issues. I tow a food trailer. The hitch sagged and the lowered hitch raised the front end of my SUV. I also experienced sway and buffeting when tractor-trailers passed. Windy, wet nights and big trucks were white-knuckle drives. NO MORE.
Nobody does it better than etrailer! They answer their phone! They are truly knowledgeable about their products and care about their clients. My first call directed me to my precise options. I ordered it on-line and it arrived a day ahead of schedule. I watched their exceptional installation video three times before attempting installation. This is what sets ET apart. They did not have one video - they had two - one for a truck and one for an SUV / VAN. What was not covered in the videos was only a call away. PAY ATTENTION HERE: The rig uses a set of stacked-washers to adjust the "angle" of the hitch ball. The more washers you use - the greater the angle and the higher the tension of the torsion bar. If you begin with too many washers, you may find that after you use the provided torsion bar installer (a variant on a crow-bar) to install your torsion/control-bars. YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET THE BARS BACK OFF! That was my case. And if you cannot get the bars off - you cannot remove the tow vehicle. I had no idea how to release all of that pressure without potentially hurting myself. Ugh. ONE CALL - THAT'S ALL! A quick call to ET. The rep understood my problem but he also understood that mine was a dangerous issue and sought additional help internally. He came back with "...this is going to sound odd but trust me. Chock your wheels. Raise your tow vehicle from the center of the tow bar until you raise your rear wheels off of the ground and until you can move the bars manually (a light tap with a hammer is a good indicator as to whether you have relieved enough pressure by raising the tow vehicle). When you can swing the bars manually - swing them out and away from the trailer and if you swing them far enough toward the tow vehicle, they will simply fall out of their socket. (There is also a release tab you can pull out - but I prefer this method.) It WORKED!
Adjusting this type of system can be an arduous task that is well worth the effort and no company does a better job of selling, educating and servicing than ET. My local tow shop wanted to install a "chain" system without sway control and when I asked him what he thought of the "bar" systems - he said, "...hmm, I've never seen those before". Go with the experts and your own mechanical expertise. ET has your back.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch For V-Nose Trailer
Thank you for providing that picture and measurement. Based on what you have there there is definitely enough room to install a weight distribution hitch. I recommend the Fastway e2 which will require placing the brackets 27-30" back along the frame, leaving you with room to spare. The correct system will depend on the tongue weight of your loaded setup. The best way to find this is to measure with a scale like the # e99044. I have also attached an article below which covers other ways...

I recommend using the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-1000 for your trailer with the 2 UTV's. This system is also rated for a trailer up to 10,000lbs but has a much wider spread tongue weight capacity of 600-1,000lbs. The Curt # C69JR you found requires 800-1,000lbs of tongue weight which is going to be higher than you are going to have on your trailer. Typically tongue weight should fall around 10-15% of the trailer total weight. With a total weight around 5,350lbs you should...

  • Solution to Fix Porpoising Fastway 1,000 lb Spring Bar Weight Distribution
If the trailer does not have enough weight on the tongue relative to the weight of the trailer (ideally between 10-15%) then you can experience issues with porpoising. A weight distribution system will generally fix most porpoising issues as it helps better distribute the load more evenly but if the springs bars are too weak they can flex more and give in to porpoising. The best solution would be to rearrange weight on the trailer but stiffer springs bars would also help to alleviate some...

  • Will Fastway e2 Bars Fit Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Head For Keystone Passport 229RK
That's an excellent question, but due to the differences in size of the bars for the two systems, the spring bars for the Fastway e2 are not compatible with the head of the Equal-i-zer, which is the four-point system like you mentioned. This has also been verified by the manufacturer for us, so if you do want that top-of-the line, four-point sway control, that would mean getting a new Equal-i-zer system. If your Shadow Cruiser loaded tongue weight is 849lbs you are good with these hitches. In the event this measurement is the dry tongue weight from the factory you will most likely need to move to a higher rated system since it does not account for the additional 40-60lbs of propane and a 50lb battery added by the dealer...
