Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.



Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.


To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.


The flat spring bars of this system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. These bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer.


Integrated Dependent Sway Control

The Steadi-Flex weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved in 2 ways. First, the system head is designed to firmly hold the spring bars in place to provide tight resistance and help ensure that your trailer tracks behind your vehicle. Second, the spring bar brackets that mount on your trailer's frame produce friction with the bars whenever any side-to-side motion occurs. This keeps the bars from moving, also helping to hold your trailer in a straight line.


System Head with Steel-on-Steel Friction

System Head

The head of the Steadi-Flex system firmly holds the spring bars in place at the hitch point. This tight hold helps to keep the bars from moving, which in turn helps to ensure that the trailer is held firmly in place behind your vehicle. If any sway or side-to-side movement does occur, the spring bars will move only slightly inside of the system's head. This steel-on-steel contact produces frictional resistance to limit further side-to-side motion of the bars, limiting the motion of your trailer in the process. The Steadi-Flex head is wider than most weight distribution heads. This design allows for greater surface area for the spring bars to move against. This makes it easier to produce the friction that resists sway.


Sway Control Brackets with Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Friction Material Brackets

The spring bars attach to the trailer frame with fixed, sturdy steel brackets. They sit on top of the brackets instead of being suspended by chains like the bars that are on traditional weight distribution systems. Chain suspensions typically allow a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Because the Steadi-Flex has brackets in place of chains, that unwanted movement of the spring bars is eliminated. This helps to keep your trailer in line behind your vehicle. In addition, these brackets create friction to limit any side-to-side movement that may occur. When each spring bar on the Steadi-Flex system moves within the bracket, it rubs along the surface of the bracket, creating friction. This resistance limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.


Most systems with sway control brackets use bare steel brackets to create friction with the steel bars. Steel-on-steel friction typically causes a much louder ride, and it can result in wear and tear on the brackets themselves. The Steadi-Flex brackets, on the other hand, are lined with automotive-grade friction material. This material is more abrasive than bare steel, which allows more friction to build up faster and easier. The long-lasting friction material also reduces the banging noise created by the bars hitting the inside of the steel brackets. This provides a quieter ride while towing.


Fast, Easy Installation

The Steadi-Flex system is easy to install and set up. On the trailer side, simply clamp the spring bar brackets around your trailer's frame. Then prepare your vehicle by sliding the included shank into your 2" x 2" hitch receiver, and bolt on the head. The system head can be easily adjusted to achieve the proper angle and optimum leverage for your specific setup. No drilling is required to install this weight distribution system.


Head Tilt Adjustment

The Steadi-Flex system uses the traditional washer-style adjustment method to achieve the perfect tilt. Controlling the head tilt helps you to fine-tune the leverage and maximize the amount of tension in the whole system. To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the adjustment pin and insert the pin into the head assembly. To increase the angle, add a washer. To reduce the angle, remove a washer.

The spring bars of the Steadi-Flex system slide into the weight distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex to evenly distribute the weight between your tow vehicle and your trailer.


The bars easily pin into place inside the system head - no need to torque or re-torque any trunnion bolts to adjust the tension. With fewer parts to manage, installing and maintaining the Steadi-Flex is simple.

The spring bar brackets simply clamp around your trailer's frame - no drilling required. These brackets are designed to be positioned 27" to 32" back from your coupler and they can fit a wide range of frame sizes and can even be used on a trailer with a bottom-mounted coupler.


While other brackets use relatively thin L-pins to secure the spring bars in place on the brackets, the Steadi-Flex system uses steel pieces that are almost as wide as the brackets themselves to secure the bars. These retention brackets easily pin into place once wrapped around the spring bars. As a result, you can have greater piece of mind knowing that the spring bars are secure and less likely to rattle around inside of the brackets.

This product we purchased works great. Before I purchase this product my truck was not level or my trailer and it rode horribly and then we purchased this product and the truck is level and the trailer is level and rides nice and the trailer does not sway. I would suggest this product to anyone. Unfortunately I do not have any pictures because it’s winter where I live.

etrailer made shopping for weight transfer hitches easy. As usual I started by looking at prices and gravitated to the lower range. Once I started comparing features I kept narrowing my search until I bought this product which happens to be on the higher price category. The reason I bought this one?
1) the friction pads rather than sliding metal on the cheaper ones creates anti-sway that is built in and is quieter with no chatter like the metal ones.
2) The transfer arms are higher up and don't droop down giving more ground clearance.
3) The frame mounted pads create an anti-sway effect. Other systems use chains that do not have this anti-sway feature. They're cheaper but this is better engineering.
Overall quality is excellent. All the hardware is quality stuff. The instructions are clearly written and easy to follow.
I recommend this hitch over the others in this category. Spend the extra money, you won't regret it.

The weight distribution hitch works great. My rig is a Jeep Cherokee with R-pod which are well suited for each other. The hitch keeps the attitude of the truck level and it handles great. I would recommend this to others.

We like the end result of using this hitch with our travel trailer.
However, there are some quality issues. I have attached a photo that shows how the holes in two of the frame bracket assembly pieces did NOT line up. The holes in the other two pieces did align. Also, we had to replace the friction pads, after only one trip, and are still having a problem with one side having more tension on it than the other side. BUT, we are still very glad we are using the hitch, it has made such a difference in traveling with the trailer.

Yes, everything has worked out great! I attached a picture of the race car trailer hooked up to my 2011 Tahoe PPV. Made several trips this summer of at least 3 hours or more,fully loaded,
and it towed perfect. The only thing I ended up having to do, was modify the solid drop hitch. Had to shorten it by 2" because it would bottom out occasionally.
You guys have always given me great service, technical advice, and selection of products to work from.

The Reese 66447 is just right for my single axle 3500# GVWR utility trailer. My slope mower is right at the maximum allowed net weight and the trailer is maximum allowed width. So sway and wander on these twisty WV back roads is not acceptable. This hitch restored my tow vehicle front height to normal and there was no sway or wander in the mountains. The install was easy and removal/replacement was quick. Very well made for a light application like this. In slow maneuvers the friction pads are LOUD, but when cruising I did not notice them. The delivery and follow-up from etrailer.com was first rate too.

Using with 2003 Toyota Sequoia and a pop-up camper which is somewhere around 2,300lb and maybe 200-300lb tongue weight.

Used this for a couple long trips, and it has worked great! The longest trip was 4,300 miles, and I'm very happy that I bought it! (#66557 weight distribution and sway control system.)

It feels very stable towing at higher speeds. The truck doesn't bottom out over large bumps. The sway control works great - the camper stays right behind the truck and doesn't sway back and forth when changing lanes or in a strong wind. It feels much more stable at higher speeds than before.

I had to buy longer safety chains for my camper because this hitch head is longer than my old drawbar ball mount. I also upgraded the camper tires from load range C to load range D, because the weight distribution shifts more weight to the tires, and the higher load rating should help them run cooler. And don't forget to buy a ball since it doesn't come with it.
The initial Installation does take a while, so make sure you leave enough time before a trip to be able to take a test drive and re-do it if the heights and angles are not quite right.
After starting the long trip, I didn't re-grease the sway bar front pivot, so I can see some wear marks on the bars. So now I bought a tub of grease (Item # 58117) to keep in the trailer so I can apply grease regularly to the front pivot.

We are using this hitch on a 2019 Scamp 16’ Deluxe camper, and towing with a Toyota 4Runner. Just completed nearly 5000 mile trip with this hitch towing our camper, and it worked absolutely great.

We previously towed the Scamp with a standard hitch and a Ford Escape, and could not get above about 58 mph without experiencing uncomfortable trailer sway; even less in a cross wind. But with this Reese 66557 hitch we regularly cruise 65+ mph with ZERO trailer sway. It handles cross winds and passing semi’s with no problem. A very worthwhile, quality product.

Our Scamp has dual LP tanks and battery on the front, but there was ample room to install the brackets on the trailer A-frame well within the required distance from the ball socket. I did need to remove the LP tanks and get a torque wrench and a larger socket to complete that part of the assembly. You will also need a torque wrench and larger sockets to assemble the vehicle end of things, too. I am not a mechanic, but was able to complete the assembly per the instructions with no problems. Everything has remained tight and secure after all those miles on all sorts of roads.

When hooking up the trailer we do use the special tool that comes with the hitch to lift the torsion bars up onto the friction pads. Then it just takes a few seconds to put on the small brackets and clip pins to keep the torsion bars in place and you are ready to go. Unhooking is just as easy. And removing the entire draw bar assembly from the vehicle for a day trip without the trailer takes all of a minute.

Backing and tight turns in the campground are no problem with this hitch. You do not need to remove anything to maneuver. The hitch does creak and groan a little in those maneuvering situations due to the torsion bars rubbing on the friction pads. But driving down the highway there is no noise from the hitch.

A quality product, well designed and manufactured, with good assembly instructions. It has enabled us to travel safely and securely at highway speeds. After nearly 5000 miles we can highly recommend this product.

I have used it several times to pull a 3000 lb travel trailer and it has worked very well. My tow vehicle stays level and swaying is damped. The setup is straight forward but takes a little time. I did it in a flat paved parking lot. I added an electric jack on the trailer tongue. This makes attaching and detaching much easier. The only issue I have is that the pads the springs rest on have pieces broken off. I ordered a new set but one side chipped off the first time I used them.

I bought the 4,000 lb Reese weight
distribution system for my 3,500 lb GVWR pull behind trailer. I did install it myself and it works just like it says it does. It does make a loud noise when turning that is annoying. So I would recommend getting the chain type and not the friction one. But then you need the sway control arm.
I did have the same problem another writer posted about that the brackets that hold the tension arms were the wrong ones and the holes did not line up but etrailer sent replacements right away that where the correct one. The hitch does not come with a ball so I brought it to a local trailer company that installed my trailer brakes and bought a ball from them for $11 and they installed it for free. It takes a thin wall socket and 140 foot lbs of torque! Otherwise it was simple to install myself. As long as you have a 3/4 in socket 1/2 in drive.
Also, be aware that the trailer tongue arms dimensions must be no more than
1 1/2 in wide and at least 3 1/2 in tall or it will not fit.
I would recommend calling the company to insure to get the correct weight distribution system so if you have a problem later they will have to honor it.

Works great. I tow a 3,500 lb bayside pop up camper with my 2009 Nissan Pathfinder. Without the weight distribution and sway bars the system would be unsafe to tow at freeway speeds. With the system it is solid and I have felt comfortable even on winding mountain roads.

Installation was straight forward and took 1-2 hours. I would absolutely get a system like this that is backup capable. The brake pad material is holding up well after 1 year.

Haven't had a chance to tow our R-pod180 with our 2015 Jeep JKU Wrangler yet, but the installation went smoothly. Read and understand the directions first, and you shouldn't have any issues. You'll need a BIG torque wrench (or a BIG breaker bar) to properly tighten the hitch bolts. Take the time to set everything up according to the directions. Overall, this appears to be a quality product. I'll update the review after we've put a few hundred tow miles on it.

I'm very happy with this weight distribution/antisway hitch. Hopefully I will be able to find some new friction pads when they wear out. It was very noisy at first, but now that it is broken in the friction pads don't make so much noise.

I've used this for about 20,000 miles with my 3000 lb camper trailer and found it to work well. I use an electric trailer jack to hook and unhook. I am able to pull at higher speeds, e.g. 70 MPH and with crosswinds. Made my pulling experience much more pleasant!

Quick shipping. Clear directions. etrailer is a well organized seller. As with other Reese products, top quality. If your level trailer has a top-of-the-ball height of 13" or so, be aware that the weight distribution system may put the hitch pretty close to the road (perhaps a clearance of 6"). OK for us on the Interstates, but would be a problem if you are hauling over uneven terrain.

A better way to think of this is that the weight distribution system is actually adding upward pressure to the trailer tongue. As the spring bars are tightened, they will pull downward on the trailer tongue and force the head of the weight distribution system upward.
