Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

L-Brackets vs. Add-On Friction Sway Bars

  • L-brackets that hold spring bars in place provide a tried-and-true method of sway control
    • Provides weight distribution and sway control in one system
    • Ensures steady towing, but can be noisy
  • Friction sway bars can be added to a standard weight distribution hitch to force your trailer back in line
    • Has to be removed at times (e.g. in the rain or when you're backing up), but its adjustable tension is a plus
    • Doesn't work with surge-type actuators

A close-up image shows weight distribution L-brackets

If you need a durable, affordable option that will hold your trailer in line while providing sway control, the Reese Pro Round Bar might be just what you're after. It creates a rigid system that holds your trailer in line behind your vehicle, helping keep your trailer from getting off track. And it uses friction to force your trailer back in line if a strong crosswind or passing truck is a bit too much for the rigid hold to handle on its own.

A close-up image shows where the spring bar grinds on the steel bracket

Because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway.

Fun Fact: Steel-on-steel friction is what locomotives use to keep multi-ton railcars from swaying.

Adjusting the Head Tilt

  • Adding washers adds tension, but it's not a case of "the more the merrier"
  • Stacking washers can be a pain, but you only need to do it once, or if your tongue weight changes

A close-up image of the Reese Pro Round Bar hitch head shows the rivet and washers during installation

To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert it into the head assembly. Once the spacer is in place, tighten the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank. To check if your truck and trailer are level, you'll need to hookup and release your tongue jack. If you find that the rear of your truck is still sagging, add washers to increase leverage. If it looks like too much weight has been taken off your truck's rear axle and is sitting on your front axle, try removing a few washers.

While the washer-stacking method allows you to fine-tune the setup at the time of installation, it's going to require some patience. It can be time consuming because, if you don't get everything right the first time (which, you probably won't), you'll have to take the head unit apart to adjust the washers. You might have to raise or lower the L-brackets too to get the tension just right, and that's a bit of a pain also. Not to mention that you might have to repeat this process if your tongue weight changes or if you swap out your tow vehicle.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

When I received my Weight Distribution Hitch the box was damaged, open tears heavily taped corners. The box contained only the ball mount, hitch bar, both spring bars and the lifting handle. No hardware and no brackets. I called customer service and reported what I received. The rep, Alex or Adam Without issue made arrangements to ship the missing parts to me immediately. I understand that a package weighing over 100 pounds can be mishandled during shipping but it may worthwhile to reconsider the packaging. I am looking forward to receiving all the parts so the hitch can be installed and used.

by:

I installed it today. Still rather windy day after hurricane. Nice smooth ride, very little sway. Noticeable difference in handling. The only thing I don't like is that I cant let my tailgate down with the hitch in place. No big issue, I'll take it off. Great product. I highly recommend this hitch.

by:

Just don’t. Ordered 6/5. It is now 6/23 and I don’t have a complete hitch. Three attempts at shipping have produced two hitches that were reboxed by UPS enroute and missing parts and documentation, and the third shipment (hardware) was in perfect shape, yet failed to include all of the missing hardware that was invoiced. CS absolutely ignored comment about reimbursement for multiple trips to UPS hub to deal with damaged packages and missing parts.
Added pic of attempt #2. Evidently, if it’s got no staples, it’s not the etrailer box.

I am very sorry that this order for the weight distribution system has been so difficult. I will have our Customer Service team reach out again to make sure that you have everything that you need.

by:

Hitch works well with my single axle 19' camping trailer. Easy to install the weight distribution bars.

by:

Received this Reese Weight Distribution Sway Control very soon after I ordered it. Unfortunately the box was damaged and some small parts were missing. I contacted etrailer and the parts were immediately shipped to me. This in now installed and it works great with our travel trailer.

by:

I love the WD Hitch. Installation was extremely easy but would have been easier with a second person. Fits nicely on the Jeep Gladiator Sport w/o having to remove any of the reinforced bumper. Setup and removal is probably the hardest part, just because of its weigh. The receiver must weigh 60 pounds or so. Towing is amazing and had made long travel much more enjoyable and less stressful. the squat and raise in the front end was terrible until I mounted this hitch. I know my trailer isn't that heavy and only have about 500 pounds tongue weight, but this has made all the difference and I feel much safer when traveling with my family.

Tow Vehicle: 2020 Jeep Gladiator Sport (No tow package)
Trailer: 2022 Forest River Rockwood 2318 esp Tent Trailer

by:

Instillation took a few hours and I had to buy a socket to change the ball to the 2 inch I needed. That aside, this unit works beautifully, no squat, no sway, and easy hook up.

It has been great. So easy to hook-up and disconnect. Pulling 5,000lbs with a Traverse at 55 to 65 mph and no problems. On long trips bring a little grease gun.

by:

Package was received on time and UPS delivered it intact and box was in good shape even though it was very heavy. It took a couple days until I got to open it for install on my truck and trailer. I was disappointed to find that the fasteners were missing for installation of brackets on trailer frame.

by:

The hitch arrived on time, the box had some damage but everything was there. It went together easily and is doing the job.

by:

Exactly as advertised. My trailer runs very smooth and no swaying at all. Even in top speed of 70mph. Easy to install and store.

by:

works great on my 2021 Frontier, towing a 3500-4000 lb camper. Have run 2300 miles this season, sometimes in really windy conditions, and the hitch makes all the drama go away. Wish I'd had a similar hitch on my previous larger truck.

by:

So far so good. I need to give them a workout to see how well they work.

by:

The drop is way too long on this item. It works fine but wish it wasn’t a long drop

by:

The packaging container was delivered damaged. The contents needs to be inspected and verified against the bill of materials

Customer Service will reach out to you. I have emailed the parts list to you.

by:

My order was delivered in a dilapidated box that looked like it had been used several times. It was taped together to keep it from falling apart. Negative 5 stars for delivery.

by:

Parts were missing not sure if this was an oversight by etrailier or Reese. etrailer ordered the the missing part and is shipping priority delivery.

I haven’t assembled or installed yet. etrailier customer service is EXCELLENT. They help me find the best WDSC for my needs. Amy was was very helpful, professional and personable on ordering and shipping the missing parts.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ETRAILIER!

by:

Worked better than I expected it to. Leveled camper and caravan nicely. Pulls level and smooth at low and high speed. One warning though be very careful with the spring arms. The first time I disconnected it the van was at an angle to the camper. The first side came off easy. I didn't expect (and should have) the other side to be different, but it was apparently under a lot of pre-load and when it snapped off the bracket it slammed to the side and broke my shin bone. My stupid so don't blame the hitch.

by:

Worked great a bit noisy overall great product

by:

I'm pulling a 21 foot camper trailer with a 1/2 ton pickup and it does help reduce sway and rocking motions. The instructions could be better written and easier to understand. The box it was shipped in was destroyed and it was repackaged in ups boxes before I received it and no parts were missing.

by:

When I went to the front door the cardboard box the hitch was in was really squished and broke open. All the parts were there I guess as there was no instruction or parts listed was there, it makes it really hard for me to figure out how to install it properly. So I guess I will have to find a camper trailer store n order to install it.

Hope it won't cost to much to properly install it. Any help would be greatly appreciate it very much.

Arrived not even in a box. Etrailer was not helpful in getting replacement parts. Took days to even hear back. Ended up just having to ship it back, now my trip is delayed trying to find a weight distribution hitch local

by:

I will let you know,when I Tow

by:

Installed easily, trailer traveled real tight behind vehicle. I was more than impressed. However, package was very beat up upon arrival.

by:

Thank you very much for all the help. I received the shank today. You people are the best.

by:

Missing all hardware. Box taped to hell and arrived open
