Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

L-Brackets vs. Add-On Friction Sway Bars

  • L-brackets that hold spring bars in place provide a tried-and-true method of sway control
    • Provides weight distribution and sway control in one system
    • Ensures steady towing, but can be noisy
  • Friction sway bars can be added to a standard weight distribution hitch to force your trailer back in line
    • Has to be removed at times (e.g. in the rain or when you're backing up), but its adjustable tension is a plus
    • Doesn't work with surge-type actuators

A close-up image shows weight distribution L-brackets

If you need a durable, affordable option that will give you weight distribution and sway control in one, the Reese Pro Round Bar might be just what you're after. It creates a rigid system that holds your trailer in line behind your vehicle, helping keep your trailer from getting off track. And it uses friction to force your trailer back in line if a strong crosswind or passing truck is a bit too much for the rigid hold to handle on its own.

A close-up image shows where the spring bar grinds on the steel bracket

Because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway.

Fun Fact: Steel-on-steel friction is what locomotives use to keep multi-ton railcars from swaying.

Adjusting the Head Tilt

  • Adding washers adds tension, but it's not a case of "the more the merrier"
  • Stacking washers can be a pain, but you only need to do it once, or if your tongue weight changes

A close-up image of the Reese Pro Round Bar hitch head shows the rivet and washers during installation

To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert it into the head assembly. Once the spacer is in place, tighten the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank. To check if your truck and trailer are level, you'll need to hookup and release your tongue jack. If you find that the rear of your truck is still sagging, add washers to increase leverage. If it looks like too much weight has been taken off your truck's rear axle and is sitting on your front axle, try removing a few washers.

While the washer-stacking method allows you to fine-tune the setup at the time of installation, it's going to require some patience. It can be time consuming because, if you don't get everything right the first time (which, you probably won't), you'll have to take the head unit apart to adjust the washers. You might have to raise or lower the L-brackets too to get the tension just right, and that's a bit of a pain also. Not to mention that you might have to repeat this process if your tongue weight changes or if you swap out your tow vehicle.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

Oh my goodness! Looks like that box had a rough trip. I will have our Customer Service team reach out.

by:

Hitch has worked well. Initially it made noise when towing. Ive since lubed the spring arms where they attach and lock in place.

by:

Packaging was terrible. Hitch was loose inside box causing box to open. Not sure if all parts are there. Will be returning the hitch.

I have a 2022 Titan Pro4x with a 6-inch lift and 35-inch tires. We purchased a 2024 Grand Design Imagine 2800BH travel trailer. I knew I needed a weight distribution hitch with sway bars, and I knew I was not going with the chain-style WDH. We used the chain style with our previous travel trailer and I was white-knuckled everywhere I drove.

This hitch reduced the sway, 18-wheeler suction when they passed me, and the front end of my truck was only 1/2 inch different than when it was unloaded.

My complaints are minor but should be noted. The trailer frame brackets bent inward at the bottom bolt when tightening to 80 lbs as the instructions advised to do. Also, the bottom silver bolt of the trailer frame bracket is too long and pushes out on the L bracket where the arms rest.

The shank is designed to fit a 2-inch receiver. It is not a snug fit and was able to move up and down, plus side to side. Not only does this cause instability but it also creates noise. While it wasn't much movement, it was noticeable. I was required to purchase a hitch tightener to create a snug fit and limit movement. As much as this product costs, adding a hitch tightener (normally $12) to the package would have been appropriate.

Overall, I'd buy the product again as it does its job, but I would have first gone to a home improvement store and purchased shorter bolts for the bottom frame bracket to avoid bending the steel frame brackets.

by:

Great overall system. I had a bit of some sag and when wind would hit trailer felt very uneasy but after this using this had no issues at all, glad I made the purchase!

by:

etrailer carries a great selection of “all things trailers”. Having built several trailers previously I wish I had known about this company earlier. The explanation for each item was thorough and helpful. The order and delivery were were expedited quickly. Communication was fantastic. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this company to anyone looking for trailer parts and for construction of same.

Thank you etrailer!

by:

Would advise a plastic wrap around the box, the hitch is so heavy the cardboard broke and some parts came out. It appears all is there but a bit of plastic will save a customer service call :)

The box arrived severely damaged. You could tell it had been damaged from the company and all taped up before shipping. Went through the parts list and was missing a part also

Complete fiasco ordering from this site. Save your precious time and buy local or from another site. Product was received at my local distribution office and just sent back to etrailer…no explanation. I was counting on my product to arrive on a certain date in order to start our family vacation. Didn’t happen and had to cancel…paying cancellation fees. Again, no explanation, just that they would deliver a new package. It arrived today, but 7 days too late. Not pleased.

Easy to install. Works great

by:

Just bought a new travel trailer and the dealer hooked this up to my truck/trailer. 60 mile ride home and it went very smooth. I haven't taken the truck/trailer off road yet but when I do I'll have extra peace of mind know the trailer weight is properly distributed and I have the anti-sway control. The dealer wanted to sell me one of their units that was exactly the same design but over twice as much money. Reese makes good quality towing products and I'm sure I'll be happy with this equipment.

More pleased than ever to have this weight distribution hitch. Lat month we took our trailer to Bryce Canyon and the wind on the way down was blowing very hard. Semi-tractor trailers were swerving into adjacent lanes when a hard gust would hit. It was unnerving. Have the hitch didnt make the wind go away but it made it much easier to handle the wind gusts. Ive also been more conscious of other trucks pulling trailers and their trailers are swaying. Glad I made the investment of a good quality Reese hitch.

Worked great for me. It really helped on my camper. This was the first time I installed one my self and I was done in a couple of hours.

by:

All equipment and hardware arrived in good packaging and all components and clear install instructions were included. My rig is stored for the winter one hour away, so installation will have to wait until Spring.

by:

Heavy duty product
Instructions are
vague

by:

The hitch is heavy. The packaging didn’t stand up to the delivery.

by:

Josh was very helpful when I discovered that UPS had done something that made my hitch undeliverable. He expedited the process to get a new one shipped out once UPS had done their investigation. It's a very solid construction, and I am looking forward to our inaugural trip with the new camper this weekend.

by:

Box was all beat up. And a part fell out. The ups driver made sure it stayed with it.

by:

Great product, super fast shipping, great service. Did not disappoint. Made pulling my 32' trailer a breeze.

I can help you determine the best weight distribution system to use, but you will need to confirm the GVWR and tongue weight of your trailer on the spec plate or sticker on the trailer. The best way to select a weight distribution hitch is with the tongue weight and GVWR of your trailer and the tongue weight should typically be 10-15% of the loaded weight of your trailer. Not to worry, the added weight of a weight distribution hitch such as the Reese Pro Round Bar Weight Distribution # RE44FR for your 4,500 lb Evergreen camper does NOT count as added towing weight or tongue weight. There is an issue though, in that the Reese # RE44FR is likely overrated for your camper.
