Expert Answers about Chevrolet Trailer Breakaway Kit

  • Comparing Hopkins Trailer Breakaway Kits 20099 and 20400
  • Yes, both Hopkins trailer breakaway kits you referenced, parts # 20099 and # 20400, are complete and equivalent breakaway kits that differ only in the manner that they mount to the trailer. Part # 20099 mounts on the side of the trailer frame while part # 20400 can mount to the frame or to the trailer jack. I have linked in installation video for both kits as well as a helpful article.

  • Comparing Breakaway Kits for 2 Axle and 3 Axle Trailers
  • It honestly just boils down to what the manufacturer has tested and approved for each battery. For example, the Tekonsha Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 50-85-313 is rated for up to 3 axles while the Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 20099 is only rated for up to 2 axles. Breakaway kits are designed to stop your trailer in a worst-case scenario. Since this is something that is used for emergencies only I highly recommend swapping out your current system with one...

  • Comparing Trailer Breakaway Switch Kits
  • Some different brand names of trailer breakaway kits do originate from a common source, and this is also true for items like jacks, landing gear and steps. There really is not a lot to distinguish one from another, since their component parts are virtually identical: a battery, a box, a charger and a switch. The one part that can make a difference is the battery itself. A higher output battery can power brakes on more axles. Hopkins Engager Trailer BreakAway Kit # 20400 can handle 1 or...

  • Comparing Hopkins Engager Breakaway Kits 20400 and 20099
  • Pretty much the only difference between the Engager breakaway systems # 20099 and # 20400 are the designs of the battery boxes. Both function the same and have the same features. Engager # 20400 is meant to be mounted to the side of the trailer frame whereas # 20099 is designed more from the top of a frame. But ultimately you could install them anywhere there is space so I wouldn't say one is better than the other for you trailer.

  • Do Tekonsha Breakaway Kit with Charger, # 20020 and # 2028 Come with the Same Charger
  • Both the Tekonsha Breakaway Kit with Charger, # 20020, and the Tekonsha Breakaway Kit with Charger, Clamp On, # 2028, come with the same charger. The only difference is how each system mounts to the trailer. Break away batteries require a special charger because they are smaller than a regular 12 volt battery. Trying to charge it just through the 12 volt circuit from a trailer connector can overcharge the battery. The charger prevents that from happening after the battery has been charged...

  • What is the Difference Between the Hopkins Engager Breakaway Kit # 20099 and # HM20119
  • The difference is the length of the lead wire. Both part # 20099 and (discontinued) part # HM20119 use the same Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit w/ Built-In Charger but the part 20099 only has a 7" long lead wire while part 20119 has a 44" long lead wire.

  • Comparing Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Systems
  • Tekonsha breakaway kit # 50-85-313 is an all-in-one type of set up in which the charger is integrated into the lid of the battery box. Kits # 2028 and # 20020 both have a separate external charger that is, to put it bluntly, better than the one integrated into the lid of the other kit. They are all good options though and I am certain you would be happy with any of the 3. I have included links to videos for all 3 kits for you.

  • Converting Military Trailer Air Over Hydraulic Drum Brakes to Electric Over Hydraulic
  • You are correct, there are 4 electric over hydraulic braking systems, from 3 manufacturers, that can be used to eliminate the air over hydraulic actuator on your M200A1 trailer. These systems all require a breakaway system to meet DOT safety standards. I will detail each system for you so you can select the one that will work best for your truck and trailer setup. First, the Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, # K71-650, would be a good choice because it will work with the OEM...

  • Differences Between Second Breakaway Kits for the Roadmaster BrakePro and BrakeMaster
  • The two second vehicle kits you referenced, the Second Vehicle Brakeaway Kit for Roadmaster BrakePro # RM-98162 and the Second Vehicle Kit with BreakAway for BrakeMaster Systems # RM-98160 are for two different supplemental braking systems. The # RM-98162 is for a discontinued supplemental braking system called the Roadmaster BrakePro. This system does not use air at all so an air reservoir is not needed. The # RM-98160 is used with the Roadmaster BrakeMaster # RM-9160 which is used on...

  • What is the Difference in Hopkins Engager Breakaway Systems 20099 and 20400
  • Hopkins Engager breakaway systems # 20099 and # 20400 function the same way and have the same features. The main difference is in how they mount. Engager # 20099 is meant to be mounted on top of the frame with the LED indicator and test button facing up. Engager # 20400 was meant to be mounted to the side of the trailer frame so that its LED indicator and test button are also facing up. You will want to make sure the battery in the system you use is protected. That is why breakaway systems...

  • What Are The Differences Between The HydraStar # HS381-9067 and HS481-8067?
  • The HydraStar Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator w/ Breakaway and 7-Way RV Harness # HS381-9067 is designed to work with an aftermarket electric over hydraulic brake controller. This kit will require you to wire in the components using the wire connectors that are included with the kit. I recommend using this kit if your trailer doesn't already have a 7-way trailer connection as you will get the junction box that allows you to wire up the trailer correctly. The HydraStar Vented Marine...

  • How Long Is the Warranty On An Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes
  • The HydraStar Vented Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes part # HS381-8067 which is what comes with the HydraStar Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator w/ Breakaway and 7-Way RV Harness part # HS381-9067 has a two year warranty. This is actually one of the highest warranty periods that is offered for an electric over hydraulic actuator. There are a few other options for disc brakes which I have attached for you below along with the warranty period. Dexter DX Series...

  • Comparing Uni-Servo and Free Backing Hydraulic Drum Trailer Brakes
  • If you replace the current brakes on your trailer with the same uni-servo drum brakes and no lockout actuator (like # T2351000), the brakes will deliver 20 percent braking when traveling in reverse. However, the more pressure you apply going backwards against the coupler, the more the brakes will engage so backing up the driveway will prove difficult. The Titan Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly, # T4489600, will allow you to brake in reverse using a coupler with no lockout...

  • Comparing Blue Ox Patriot and Roadmaster Even Brake Towed Car Braking Systems
  • The main difference between the Blue Ox Patriot and the Roadmaster Even Brake systems is that the Roadmaster # RM-9400 uses compressed air to actuate the brakes in the towed vehicle, while the Blue Ox Patriot II uses an electrically-operated actuator to engage the brake pedal. As a result the Blue Ox system uses less power (since it does not incorporate an air compressor) and is a bit simpler to install. The Even Brake can only be used with vehicles that have power brakes. Roadmaster suggests...

  • Titan 7000 lb Hydraulic Actuator Versus Atwood Model
  • Your assumption about the Titan versus the Atwood coupler is correct. When the tow vehicle comes to a stop, the front of the coupler portion will swivel downward which compresses the actuator. The Titan simply slides directly rearward, with no pivot involved. Although either coupler would serve you well, I prefer the simpler Titan design. The Titan actuator you referenced, part # T43397007K would be ideal for you if your trailer uses drum brakes. Your brake assemblies will not be needed...

  • Comparing Portable And Fixed Supplemental Braking Systems For A 2010 Jeep Wrangler
  • There's going to be two main styles of supplemental braking systems; fixed or portable. If you want a system that's going to permanently install in your Wrangler and will be ready to go with no setup after the initial installation then you'd want to go with a fixed system. If you don't want to have a permanent installation and would rather have something you'd install each time then you'd want to go with a portable system. Fixed systems tend to be quite a bit more work upfront since they're...

  • Comparing Free Backing and Duo Servo Hydraulic Brake Assemblies
  • Good questions. The difference between free backing brakes like the # AKFBBRK-35-D and regular hydraulic drum brakes like # DMSB18794M-93M (referred to as duo or duel servo) is that the wheel brake cylinder has pistons on both sides of the regular/duo servo brakes instead of just the one side on the single servo free backing assemblies. The amount of braking doesn't change much between them, they just function differently yet under the same amount of hydraulic pressure. The duo servo...

  • Comparing Different Hanger Kits ffor Single Axle Trailer with Double Eye Leaf Spring
  • Hi Barney! Any of the single axle kits you listed will work just fine for your single axle trailer. The main differences between the kits you listed is their height and how they install so I'll list out the differences below and you can decide from there which option is best for your trailer. - 1-1/2" Front, 7/8" Rear (4-1/4" or 4-1/2" clearance between trailer frame and axle) - Kit # APS1 - 1-1/2" Front, 1-1/4" Rear (4" or 4-1/2" clearance between trailer frame and axle) - Kit #...

  • What is the Difference Between the Correct Track Trailer Alignment Kit LC87120 and RR23QX
  • The difference between the Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit # LC87120 and the Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit # RR23QX is that the # LC87120 is for a single axle trailer and the # RR23QX is for a tandem axle trailer. Since your 2018 Jayco Eagle is a tandem axle trailer you would want to use the # RR23QX tandem axle kit. The # RR23QX will contain all the additional parts needed for a tandem axle application.
