The competition between full-size trucks is tighter than ever. So what common threads can you expect to see in 2019?

The Super-Powered Powertrains: Ford is the first to offer up a diesel engine for the half-ton market with the Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel, which features an impressive 22 city/30 highway mpg.

Ram has also brought its new toys to the playground this year with its High Output Cummins® Turbo Diesel engine for Ram 2500 and 3500 models. The new engine boasts a record-setting 1,000 lb-ft of torque and 400 horsepower. And though Ram has not yet joined Ford in the world of diesel, the Ram 1500 has received a new eTorque mild hybrid engine for 2019.

A truck is still a truck, mind you—these are not vehicles known for their fuel efficiency. However, you'll enjoy the power and relative efficiency of these new engines when towing.

The Innovative Tailgates: Ford's integrated tailgate step has been around for a while, and it's no longer alone in the world of tailgate upgrades. Chevy has claim to the first power-up/-down tailgate. Meanwhile, Ram has released its Multifunction Tailgate (featuring a step and split doors). And perhaps most impressively of all, GMC's new MultiPro Tailgate has a 6-function design, including a tailgate, step, work station, and load stop.

The New Normal in Technology: We are moving into a time when safety and entertainment technology are becoming expected options in our vehicles, and it seems most manufacturers recognize this.

Although 2018's Ram lineup lacked much in the way of modern tech, the 2019 model has brought its A-game with trailer detection, blind spot monitoring, and more. Plus, Ram now offers the industry's first 12-inch touch screen with split-screen capabilities for multitasking (such as accessing the GPS and audio controls at once).

Although Ram's transformation was the most dramatic, it's not the only brand that saw upgrades for the 2019 model year. The GMC Sierra features an available upgraded touchscreen, and Nissan made their own touchscreen standard on all trim levels.

Finally, Toyota is back with its standard trademark Toyota Safety Sense™ on every trim level. Safety Sense™ features a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning System, Automatic High Beams, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Ford F-350 Super Duty

PROS:

If you have a job that needs doing, chances are the F-350 is up for the task. With an incredible 27,500-lb. 5th-wheel capacity, the F-350 is more than capable of hauling whatever you throw at it. But don't mistake the F-350 as a simple workhorse— there are any number of comfort, convenience, and safety customizations options. When equipped, this truck can feel as luxurious as your camper.

CONS:

The Super Duty's various trims and options get super pricey, super fast.

Ram 3500

PROS: There's pretty much nothing the Ram 3500 can't handle. What's more, you can haul your load in luxury with a handsome, comfortable interior and plenty of technology available (hello, beautiful 12-inch screen). Ram is also the first to surpass 4-digit torque ratings with their High Output Cummins® Turbo Diesel (a staggering 1,000 lb-ft of torque). All in all, the Ram 3500 is both powerful and polished, an excellent choice for any road adventure.

CONS:

Perhaps expectedly, you'll pay for all your favorite features—the most powerful truck on the market doesn't come cheap.

Chevrolet Silverado 3500

PROS:

Due to the pending redesign in 2020, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 received only minor updates from 2018. However, the Silverado 3500 features a powerful diesel engine and a quiet, comfortable ride. Chevrolet also offers the expected modern safety and crash-avoidance technology.

CONS:

Although it comes to a narrow margin in specs, GM's Duramax® falls short of others in the class. We look forward to the Chevy's redesign in 2020, which Chevy has announced will have a tow capacity of 35,500 lbs. For now, though, Ram has the lead.

GMC Sierra 3500

PROS:

Expectedly, the GMC Sierra 3500 is packed with power and capability. The truck is equipped with a powerful engine, hefty towing capabilities, and plenty of modern tech, including an available Trailering Camera. Not to mention, you can upgrade to the trademark Denali's standard heated seats, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and driver safety systems.

CONS:

Like the Chevy Silverado, the Sierra is due for a redesign in 2020. It isn't quite up to par when it comes to towing capacity when compared to Ford and Ram. Not to mention, for its hefty price tag, the popular Denali trim sports an unimpressive interior.

PROS:

As the middle child in Ford's lineup, the F-250 is often overlooked in favor of its more capable big brother and more popular younger sibling. However, with an incredible 18,000-lb. 5th-wheel towing capacity, the 2019 Ford F-250 is brawny enough to handle a considerable load, and it's as versatile as any Ford truck. Ford also offers top-notch safety tech, including a high-mount stop lamp camera perfect for hooking up your 5th wheel, not to mention Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), and Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning.

CONS:

The F-250 drives (as expected) like a truck. While Ford's technological, comfort, and convenience offerings are impressive, they are also exorbitantly expensive in some cases.

PROS: Much like its larger sibling, the Ram 3500, the Ram 2500 offers everything most truck-lovers could want. A quiet, comfortable ride, due in large part to the 2500's unique five-link coil rear suspension system. A powerful Cummins® engine. A class-leading tow capacity. An array of modern technology (including that Ram-exclusive 12-inch screen). Ram has also caught up to its competitors in terms of available safety tech, including Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Parksense® Park Assist.

CONS: Like most modern HD trucks, the Ram 2500 will hit where it hurts—your wallet. Also like most trucks, it drives better with a load than without. And unlike other brands, Ram does not offer its premium diesel engine on its 3/4-ton model.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500

PROS:

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500 is a refined contribution to the 2019 model year. The truck offers a spacious, comfortable interior and a quiet ride. The Duramax® Turbo-Diesel provides plenty of power, and you can find all the safety tech you'd expect in your 2019 truck, including available Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and Front Pedestrian Braking.

CONS:

Fuel economy is predictably lackluster. Some drivers report discomfort with the steering system, although a quick test drive should indicate whether this is an issue for you. The Silverado also lags behind Ford and Ram in towing capacity and engine power.

PROS: With a powerful engine, roomy interior, and plenty of features, you'll enjoy the ride offered by the 2019 Sierra 2500. The Sierra has plenty of available safety tech, including Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, and Front and Rear Park Assist. Not to mention, the Denali comes with comfort features like ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel.

CONS:

The Sierra will cost a pretty penny, especially the popular Denali trim, the price point of which begins where most others end. Despite the sky-high price tag, the Sierra falls short of Ram's leading tow capacity and Ford's leading engine power.

Nissan Titan XD

PROS:

Popularly termed the "Goldilocks" truck, the Nissan Titan XD falls somewhere between half-ton trucks and 3/4-ton trucks in terms of its capability, comfort, and performance. For those that need more towing power than the half-ton trucks can offer but can do without the bulk of the 1-ton or 3/4-ton trucks, the Nissan XD is not too big, not too small, but just right. 2019 brings available updates for the Titan XD: a standard 7" touchscreen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Fender® Premium Audio System, and an integrated gooseneck hitch with cargo-bed plug.

CONS:

The downside of a "Goldilocks" truck is that it's forever in-between—not as capable as the larger 3/4-ton trucks, but not as comfortable as the half-ton class.

PROS:

A truck-fan favorite, the Ford F-150 has brought its A-game to 2019. With its endless variety of customizable options, Ford acknowledges that the perfect truck is unique to each driver and offers everything from a basic workhorse to a high-end luxury machine. Ford offers 6 engine options for the 2019 model year, including the 3.0L Duramax Turbo Diesel, which provides a best-in-class EPA-estimated 30 highway mpg. The F-150 also offers no shortage of comfort, including heating/cooling/massaging leather seats, and technology to upgrade your drive, including a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®), a Lane-Keeping System, and Cross-Traffic Alert.

CONS:

Certain safety features are limited to the higher-end trims, including the Lane-Keeping System and BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert. The interior also feels somewhat dated compared to the competition.

PROS:

The word that comes to mind when you see the 2019 Ram 1500 pickup: luxury. The posh, spacious interior. The tablet-like 12-inch Uconnect infotainment system. The coil suspension (or available Active-Level™ Four Corner Air Suspension, both of which make for a smooth ride). The Ram 1500 also offers over 100 standard and available safety features, such as Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path, Smart Cruising, and a 360-degree Surround View Camera to ease 5th-wheel hookup. The All-New Ram is also lighter, longer, and more fuel efficient than its Classic counterpart. 2019 also brings the first mild-hybrid Ram 1500, which features the 5.7L Hemi® V8 Engine with eTorque.

CONS:

Safety comes at a price—the 100+ advertised advanced safety features are only available on upper trim levels. That big beautiful infotainment system can also be buggy at times.

Ram 1500 Classic

PROS:

The Ram 1500 Classic is being sold alongside the redesigned "All-New" model in 2019. The aim was to target "entry and commercial buyers," according to Ram, and not alienate them with the abundant luxury of the all-new Ram 1500 (and its slightly heftier price tag). However, don't take the "classic" moniker to mean "outdated" in this case—the Ram 1500 is still a force to be reckoned with. The Classic model offers 3 cab/bed combinations (as opposed to the All-New model's 2) as well as competitive engine options, including a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 coming in 2019.

CONS:

You won't find as many trim options for the Classic as for the All-New (just 3 instead of 6). The Classic isn't quite as fuel efficient as its redesigned counterpart, and you won't find the latest eTorque engine or infotainment technology here. The Classic does come with a lighter price tag, and if you're in the market for a high-end work truck, the Classic certainly fits the bill. However, if you enjoy a bit of extra comfort on the road, the All-New Ram 1500 has more to offer with a just-slightly-higher entry point.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500

PROS:

Chevrolet fans are likely to find everything they need in a half-ton truck with the 2019 Silverado 1500. Technology? The Trailering Camera System package includes an optional center brake light camera to ease in 5th-wheel hookup. Safety? The Silverado offers optional Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian Braking, and Rear Park Assist, among other features. In addition, the Silverado also provides a comfortably controlled drive and spacious interior.

CONS:

You can expect modest upgrades from previous model years, but the truck somewhat lacks a "wow" factor—no revolutionary infotainment system, no hybrid technology, no class-leading fuel economy. The Silverado is impressively competent and comfortable and is certain to have everything you need, but maybe not everything you want.

GMC Sierra 1500

PROS:

In past years, descriptions of GMC vehicles were often along the lines of "just like the Chevy, but with the Denali trim and a bigger price tag." The 2019 Sierra 1500, however, makes a concerted effort to differentiate itself from its cousin, the Silverado, with a redesigned exterior and a host of GMC-specific features. These features include the durable CarbonPro Box (debuting April 2019); a rear-view mirror that can be used conventionally or with a camera for an obstruction-free view; and the MultiPro Tailgate, which is essentially a smaller tailgate within its parent and which acts as a step, a work table, and more. These features are in addition to those expected of today's high-end trucks, including a camera for viewing the truck bed (which is perfect for 5th-wheel hookup) and Driver Alert technologies. GMC is also set to receive a 3.0L Duramax Turbo Diesel engine. All in all, the 2019 Sierra 1500 stands out as a luxury truck in its own right.

CONS:

Despite all its bells and whistles, the Sierra 1500 can't quite beat the Ram in terms of ride comfort. Like most of its competitors, the Sierra limits its safety tech to its top trim levels. The popular Denali trim immediately adds more than 20k to the price tag. Also, despite the new engine with Dynamic Fuel Management, fuel economy is even more unimpressive than the 2018 model's.

Toyota Tundra

PROS:

One major area Toyota got right was its safety technology, which is mostly grouped into the Standard Toyota Safety Sense(TM) label and which is standard on all trim levels. Enjoy a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and more with the purchase of any 2019 Tundra. All in all, value and reliability are the Tundra's primary claim to fame in the half-ton class.

CONS:

Despite being a product of 2019, the Tundra holds onto characteristics of an earlier era. Certain notable technological features are lacking (the lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in a modern high-end truck is baffling). The interior is in need of a redesign, and it's a gas guzzler even by truck standards. All things considered, the Toyota Tundra is capable but lacks the flair of its competitors.

Nissan Titan

PROS:

The 2019 Nissan Titan offers several updates over previous model years. One such update is a 7-inch touchscreen in the cab, standard on all models. Unlike most other manufacturers, Nissan also offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard features. Every Titan comes with a bumper-to-bumper limited warranty for 5 years/100,000 miles (whichever comes first). A blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert system are both optional.

CONS:

Nissan has some catching up to do. The Titan falls behind in multiple categories, including powertrain options, transmissions, and safety technology. You won't find automatic emergency braking, lane control, or adaptive cruise control on a Titan this year. The Titan's fuel economy also can't compete with the diesels or hybrids offered by other manufacturers.
