Budget Bike Racks

What Type of Bike Rack Do I Need?

The safest way to carry your bike is with a hitch-mounted platform-style carrier. There are several reasons bike enthusiasts prefer hitch-mounted platform-style racks over other types.Hitch-mounted platform racks:
  • Carry bikes by wheels with little or no frame contact
  • Don't require overhead clearance (unlike roof racks)
  • Don't allow bikes to sway behind vehicle (unlike hanging racks)
  • Are more aerodynamic and fuel efficient than roof racks
  • Carry women's bikes with step-through frames without adapters
  • Can often carry kids' bikes without adapters
  • Are less likely to be destroyed by low garages

Best Budget Bike Racks (2022)

Saris Freedom ProsThe Saris Freedom provides a great fit for the whole family due to its independently adjustable wheel trays—just adjust the trays as needed to fit most men's, women's, and children's bikes, even those smaller than 20"! The tilting design and front-mounted push lever also make it easy to access your rear cargo area. Saris' patent-pending "Cuscinos" are designed to prevent any scuffing of your bike, so your gear makes it to your destination in the same condition in which it left. Plus, the lightweight rack is easy to install and remove.ConsLocks must be purchased separately. The Saris Freedom does make frame contact, although the cradles are cushioned with specially designed, patent-pending "Cuscinos." Bike space is tight, and if you switch between bikes often, adjustment can be time-consuming.

Customer Review: 5/5WOW WOW WOW That is what I just kept saying after installing this Saris bike rack . . . We are a family of 5 (3 kids and 2 grown-ups). I needed something that will help me load bikes fast, unload them and still be able to have access to the back of my Toyota Sequoia. Saris delivered in every way. Assemble of the item is straight forward. Instructions are clear and to the point. They even give you a yellow strip that helps you mark where the hitch needs to be in order to align hole openings for easier installation after you install it the first time ;) The back-up camera is still usable but not 100%. Tilting down the rack with the bikes on it is simple as 1-2-3. There is plenty of room left between the trunk door and the bike as you can see on the pictures. One HUGE benefit is that you do not need any extra parts for kids bikes. Not like with other brands. Saris delivers tremendously on this part too. No shaking, rattling, or anything that would make you notice that you have this amazing product on the back of your SUV/truck. I can't recommend it more. I am just surprised that this product has not been more advertised and represented compared to other products.

Curt Platform RackProsThe Curt Platform Rack uses adjustable wheel hoops to accomodate most bike lengths as well as independently adjustable frame hooks that secure your bike by the top tubes. The rack tilts down, even when loaded, to provide easy access to your rear cargo area. The rack also includes integrated locks to secure your bikes to the rack.ConsThe rack includes a bike lock, but a hitch lock must be purchased separately. This durable rack is also quite hefty; it may take an extra set of hands to help install or remove it.

Customer Review: 5/5Perfect bike rack for my Wife and Myself. My wife and I own both beach cruisers and mountain bikes. The frame geometries on them are very different and the rack accommodates both. What's more is my Wife's bike frame on both of her bikes is a mixte, which makes using a hanger rack impossible. This rack is easier on the bikes anyway. The rack itself is very well made and looks like it will last a long time. One of the best things was the price and no shipping charge. I saved more money on a better rack than what I could get at the bike shop. Actually, the hitch AND rack together were cheaper!

Hollywood Racks Trail Rider ProsThe Hollywood Racks Trail Rider secures your bikes via ratcheting frame hooks and sliding wheel cradles. Locks are included as a theft deterrent, so you can lock the rack to your vehicle and your bikes to the rack. The bike trays fold up for storage, and the center post folds down so you can easily load the back bike.ConsThe rack does not tilt down for trunk access with the bikes loaded.

Customer Review: 5/5Fabulous. Bike rack arrived a few days after order, and looks and works great. The best feature is that the center post folds down so I can load the back bike without snaking it around between the post and the car. Just lift up and on, and then raise the center post. I loaded 2 bikes in 2 minutes. Much better than the racks where the bikes hang. Good job Hollywood and etrailer.

Swagman XTC ProsThe Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack is a great choice for the casual cyclist. The adjustable wheel-mount design is easy to load and works great with most women's and kid's bikes (though an adapter may be required for some frames). The ratcheting bike hooks (complete with soft-frame coating) secure your bike in place.ConsThe Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack doesn't offer many additional features. Locks must be purchased separately. The rack does not tilt away for rear cargo access.

Customer Review: 5/5This bike rack came undamaged, complete, and was easy to install. Functionally, we very much like that the wheels sit into supports, and are easily secured with rubber straps. The bikes are firmly secured to the rack, so it soesn't bounce around while driving. We also like that the rack curves up some from the trailer hitch, as our previous Thule rack would scrape on the road as we backed out of our driveway due to the angle. This rack also folds pretty nicely out of the way for access to the trunk. All and all we like the materials and build quality, and think this is a very nice and convenient to use two bicycle rack with good adjust-ability for different sized bikes.

Lets Go Aero BikeWing ProsThis ultra-light bike rack is incredibly easy to lift, install, and remove. The unique V-shaped wheel-mount design allows you to easily transport women's, children's, and alternative bike frames without adapters and with no frame contact. The 2-bike model tilts to allow for trunk access even when the bikes are loaded. The 4-bike version separates into two independent 2-bike racks.ConsLocks must be purchased separately. The 4-bike model does not allow for rear cargo access when the bikes are loaded. If you have a spare tire or otherwise have little clearance between your vehicle and carrier, you may be limited in the number of bikes you can carry. Lets Go Aero offers only a 1-year warranty with the rack.

Customer Review: 5/5I was very pleasantly surprised by how well this rack works. I have a high-end mountain bike with an unconventional frame and 29" wheels, meaning it has always been either too big or too awkward for a traditional bike rack. On the off chance that I did find a rack that could support it, the bike's matte-finish would get scratched from a vertical clamp arm or some similar support. This rack has (as far as I can tell) solved all those problems. The way it allows the bike to hang from its wheels instead of its frame is a great idea (just make sure you use the included pads and bungee straps to keep your bikes from swaying, otherwise the movement could warp your rims). Plus, as an added bonus, it was also the most affordable rack I've found. My only concern is that it doesn't stick out very far from the tailgate of my truck (09 Tacoma with after-market hitch receiver) . I can put a bike on the backside and finagle the bungees in such a way so that no part of the bike rubs against the tailgate but it's difficult to get the bike on and off without scratching anything. I wouldn't say that's a flaw of the rack per se, just something to be aware of (a hitch extender would probably be a good idea if you plan on carrying two large bikes). Overall, I'm very please with this product and would highly recommend it. I wish I'd found it sooner - would've saved me a lot of headache.
