Power and Sensitivity Adjustment

Once the brake controller is installed, you can use the knob on the right side of the unit to adjust the gain (also known as output). Gain lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. You want to set it as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Typically, this setting is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa.

Tekonsha Voyager

You can fine-tune the gain by adjusting the sensitivity of the internal sensor using the knob on the left side. This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the maximum braking level. You can adjust this when you're towing heavy loads and you need more umph to bring your trailer to a stop. Your tow vehicle doesn't need that much power to brake in time, but your heavy trailer does. A high sensitivity level will get the braking power to your trailer brakes faster and with more intensity so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle forward.

LED Indicator

Keeping with its simple design, the Voyager will not overwhelm you with information. An LED indicator on the top of the unit lights up green to show that your trailer is securely connected to your tow vehicle. The LED indicator will change to red when the brakes on your trailer are activated.

During installation and setup, this light is also used to ensure that the Voyager will be able to function correctly. Proper leveling of the internal sensor is crucial to the operation of this brake controller. When the sensor is level, the LED will change to a shade of orange.

Simple Installation

The Voyager is designed to be mounted in your cab at a vertical angle that is between -20 degrees and 70 degrees. The brake controller needs to be horizontally level and parallel to the direction of travel in order to function properly.

Correct Voyager mounting90-Degree Voyager mounting

To connect the Voyager, hardwire the included harness to your vehicle. For a plug-and-play installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter is available for select vehicles. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Once the controller is mounted and connected, you must level the internal sensor. First, set the overall power to the maximum using the knob on the side of the controller. Then, while pressing the tow vehicle's brake pedal, adjust the level knob on the other side of the brake controller (this is the same knob that is used to fine-tune the power output) until the LED monitor is a shade of orange.

Installation Accessories

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Tekonsha Voyager brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

The Voyager uses a pendulum system to sense how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ram
part number: 3024-P

Install your electric brake controller quickly and easily with this custom wiring adapter. Simply plug one end of the adapter into your brake controller and then plug the other end into the built-in harness beneath your vehicle's dash.

Features:

  • Wiring adapter eases installation of your electric brake controller
  • Custom connector end plugs into the built-in port beneath the dash of your vehicle
  • Other end plugs into the back of your electric brake controller
    • Compatible with proportional brake controllers and certain time-delay brake controllers from Tekonsha
  • 1-Year limited warranty

Note: To illuminate your vehicle and trailer brake lights when you activate the manual override on your brake controller, use in conjunction with the Tekonsha brake controller converter with 7-way adapter (30235-P - sold separately). Required for use in the state of California.

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

I am very satisfied with the Voyager brake Controller I purchased. It is the easiest unit to adjust that I have ever owned. The controls are easy to adjust and it has worked well with my trailers.

by: Corey M.08/01/2020

etrailer makes the purchase easy. I have always used Tekonsha Voyagers, and on my new truck (2015 Silverado) I also wanted the convenience of having the plug and play wiring harness. etrailer had exactly what I needed and was very easy to find on the website. Installation was flawless and clean thanks to the good hardware supplied. Very excited to put some trailers behind the truck with the stopping power confidence that comes with the Voyager.

The Tekonsha Voyager trailer brake controller works well in my 99 Silverado 1500, which was easy to setup for my trailer. The option to allow for different settings of aggression for the trailer braking has allowed the stopping with different loads to be graceful with the turn of a knob. Decided to install the controller in CD storage with velcro for a nice look. Easy access when in place during use for easy observation and twicking during operation. The wife can assist with the twicking while I am driving. Excellent product!

Installed in my 2020 Gladiator and used the 3024P adapter(you must switch the black and blue wires!) it works perfect. Yes i cut a hole in my new truck but it is out of the way and you can easily access it.
Shipping was timely product was excellent.

Completely plug and play installation and works flawlessly, very happy with this unit. I also ordered the exact harness for my 2005 f150 with tow package. Here are a couple of hints that may be helpful. My installation also required a 30 amp cartridge fuse to be installed in the fuse panel in location #105(electric trailer brakes) under the dash on the passenger side. I also installed a relay in location r05 (trailer tow battery charge) but I don't think this is needed for the controller to function. I still had the original trailer brake kit and it had the additional fuse panel instructions and the relay. The owners manual showed where the 30 amp fuse and relay plugs in. You cannot test this unit until a trailer with brakes is connected, ie the led will not light up until it senses a brake circuit.

2017 Dodge Ram Pickup

I purchased a new 2017 Ram 1500 and was looking for a break controller. My son recommended the Tekonsha Prodigy 2 . I found it on etrailer.com at a better than expected price and ordered the controller and the wiring harness. I received the item in four days. It was a breeze to install. Truly plug -and-play ! Set up was a snap and I like not having to level the device every time , as with my previous controller !
I am very satisfied with my purchase and with etrailer.com !

Just wanted to throw it out there for reference for any future searches. This was for installation on a 2020 RAM 1500 (DT) which did not have a factory tow package or brake controller installed. I reviewed the e-trailer installation video on a previous Gen RAM and it said the plugs would be right above the gas pedal. At first, I couldn’t find the OEM harness plugs; There weren't any plugs just hanging out in that area.

When I got my package yesterday, I decided to take another looksee.
This time I easily found it. Looking from under, I could see the two plugs snuggly taped together with black material, not electrical, tape. Looking up from my under dash position they were slightly to the left and up. If you have huge hands and forearms, it may take some positioning, and skin cuts, to get to. Luckily I don’t, but took a little finesse to get the tape off. Once I got that off, there was plenty of room to work and plug my adapter harness into.

The brake controller came with a mounting bracket and sheet screws to mount somewhere. Under our dash, there’s a metal dash screw right about the gas pedal that works perfect to mount the bracket. I put on a zip tie as well to make sure it was extra secure. Zip tied the extra slack of the OEM harness and adapter harness under the dash.

Very easy install.

2015 ram 3500 truck.took all of like 10 min. To install and that's just taking my time.the 4 pin plug for the truck is just above gas petal.plug in the adapter to the truck.route the wires how you wish to run them.mount the controller where you wish to mount it which i utilized the panel screw for mine rather than put a hole in my new truck.plug in to controler zip tie the wires and your done.I read forums where people make a big issue out of this.truth is it's nothing to it.plug and go.hope my pics are helpful one showing the 4 pin plug, the mount location, and wires zip tied up.I like the mount type for the primus iq. Wouldn't be no problem swap g it to a different truck.I have not used it towing yet to review that part.maybe I can later

This is my second Tekonsha; I had to replace my 10-year old one after I accidentally broke it.

This one is a bit of an upgrade, and is easily able to lock up the disc brakes on my 15,000 lb trailer. Adjusting it properly, I'm able to brake as though there were no trailer at all. Set it, and forget it. It doesn't get any easier than that.

2019 Ram 1500

Product was exactly what I needed. I sold my old truck with the wire still in it (different make) all I needed a new one for this truck. 5 min of searching and I knew I found the one. 2 day shipping and it arrived on my doorstep. After 10 min of pulling at wires and tape behind my dash I found the right ones. Plugged it in and wham it connected right away (only to tell me I had a broken wire on my trailer brakes, but that's another story).

Good product, fast shipping, A+

Etrailer was very responsive to questions and getting the right parts. Only problem was delivery timing and that was usps. Install was no problem.

by: Alfie07/30/2020

Received this yesterday and was able to install it today. Instructions were very easy to follow and the only problem I had installing it was contorting myself to install the bracket. Once I got the bracket in place the rest was a piece of cake. Went for a test drive as the instructions suggested and did have to tweak it a little but it's doing exactly what I expect it to do. I'll be hauling a John Deere Tractor and wanted to make sure the brakes on the trailer worked.

by: Jake 08/20/2021

This was an easy install on my 2019 GMC truck using the appropriate wiring adapter. Instructions for setting up the control were clear. After a few adjustments my trailer brakes worked as they should. Minor adjustments of the controller are needed from time to time, but overall the controller is reliable. Good value.

Plug and play. Gotta love it! My 2017 Ram 1500 didnt come with a factory brake controller and I didnt want to spend a lung buying it and having it put in. I found a Primus iq second hand on the cheap and needed the wire harness to make it work. Installation was a breeze and it looks and works great. I saved big $$ and am very happy. Lori B made it happen for me. She was very nice and gave me her direct line when I needed to call back and had the wiring sent out asap. Very satisfied. Thanks Lori B!!

Easy install with matching wire harness for your vehicle. This controller with proportional braking is a lot of tech for the money and can be programmed easily in a few minutes for your trailer applications. I installed this on my 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie in 1/2 hour, most of that time was figuring out where I wanted to mount the unit. Works flawlessly, and can be be removed from the bracket in a minute and stored in the glove box (if you use the plug in wire harness to match your vehicle. This is a much better controller and several hundred dollars less than a dealer installed controller.

My recommendation is to use the wiring harness # 3024-P which is a custom fit and then use the Prodigy P3 # 90195 which is our best selling controller due to all the features. I've attached a video to assist. We also have a newer controller that is much more of a factory look that is very popular and fits in your dash instead of attaching to it.

  • Compatibility of Tekonsha Pod 80500 Brake Controller on 2017 Ram 1500
  • The Tekonsha PowerTrac Electronic Brake Controller - Time Delayed # 39523 (manufacturer part 80500) is not compatible with a 2017 Ram 1500. Due to the low stop light switch amperage on your truck. With that said I recommend going with the Tekonsha # TK63VR which is a proportional controller meaning it matches the brake intensity sent to your trailer brakes to the force you apply the brakes in your Ram for a much more smooth braking experience. To gewt this installed you just need to

  • Brake Controller and Install Harness Recommendation for 2016 Ram 1500
  • To install a brake controller in your 2016 Ram 1500 will not require you to take the truck to a dealer. All you need is the correct install harness part # 3024-P and a brake controller. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a

  • Installing a Brake Controller on a 2015 Ram 1500
  • You should have a single plug under the driver side dash on your 2015 Ram 1500 that you will simply need to connect an Adapter, like part # 3024-P, to for installing a Brake Controller, like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. If you check out the attached video of this setup being installed on a 2015 Ram 2500 (starting at the 1:56 mark) you will see where our installer finds the plug. If you do not have the connector under the dash (which you should), then you will need to do some splicing.

  • Does Brake Controller Install Harness Wire Colors Match Vehicle Harness Colors of 2018 Ram 1500
  • The brake controller install harness part # 3024-P is the correct install harness for your 2018 Ram 1500 and it's colors aren't going to match what the vehicle side of the connector will have. The colors of the # 3024-P represent the standard brake controller install colors for the aftermarket but the vehicle manufacturers swap colors all the time. For a brake controller (if you don't have one), I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling

  • Location of Brake Controller Port on a 2016 Ram 1500
  • All 2016 Ram's came with the brake controller plug from the factory. The location of the plug can be found at the 3:25 mark in the attached video. The plug has a white square connector. It may be tucked back further up in the dash or taped to other wires but it will be in that general location. If you do not already have a brake controller I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195 which is one of our best sellers due to to ease of use, LCD display,
