Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Hayes Engage Controls and Components

Braking Output

During the initial setup process, use the adjustment buttons on the left front of the Engage controller to adjust the braking output. The output control lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the output is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if the weight of your trailer changes. To view the output setting, press either button and release. The output setting will appear as a percentage on the digital display - from 10 to 99. Use the plus and minus buttons to raise or lower the setting in increments of 5.

Power Ramp Time Setting

To adjust how aggressively the trailer brakes activate, press and hold the minus button until the display flashes, then release. The power ramp time (1-5 seconds) will flash. Use the minus button to cycle through the options. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, select a lower number. To get smoother braking action, select a higher number. When the desired ramp time is reached, press the plus button to select it. You can alter the ramp time setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.

Manual Override

The Hayes Engage keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you re cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller and manual override.

If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, either a 20-amp or 30-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Hayes Engage comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Engage. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (power ramp) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

81760 Hayes Engage Electric Brake Controller - Time Based

Custom Wiring Adapter for Hayes Brake Controllers - Dual Plug
part number: HA81794-HBC

Install your Hayes electric trailer brake controller quickly and easily with this custom wiring adapter. One end plugs into the controller, and the other plugs into the built-in port behind your vehicle's dash.

Features:

  • Plug-in wiring adapter allows for quick, simple installation of your electric trailer brake controller
  • No cutting or splicing required
    • Custom connector end plugs into the built-in port behind the dash of your vehicle
    • Opposite end plugs into the back of your electric brake controller
  • Compatible with time-delayed and proportional brake controllers from Hayes
  • Made in the USA

Installation of Hayes Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Hayes electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, in which the wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Usually when this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

This adapter plugs into the built-in connector behind your vehicle's dashboard. To access this connector, first locate the instrument cluster finish panel in the center of the dash, near the driver's side. Carefully pry the panel out and undo the locking tabs to remove the panel. Plug the adapter into the mating connector in the large gray housing behind the panel.

No hardwiring is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the factory port, you simply plug the other end of the adapter directly into your electric trailer brake controller. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

After one year of use the unit works as advertised but does require some getting used to.When first installed it goes to 25% activation in a total of 5 seconds so I turned it down to 15% and like it better loaded or empty..I prefer a proportional controller over timed but due to shortages at the time of purchase this one has filled the job well..Good price and easy install so will see how long it lasts...

by: Nick 04/10/2024

Easy install and works great. I get all my trailering items from etrailer and have never had an issue.

by: Susan04/20/2017

Shipment was prompt and I received exactly what I ordered. Super easy to install in my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 and im a girl. :)

by: Dale10/25/2023

Easy to install. Clear instructions.,Works great.

by: Timothy N.06/12/2019

Nissan Titan pulling a fully loaded 14x7 Cargo Mate Blazer enclosed trailer. The unit was pretty easy to install. etrailer included the proper wiring harness for my Titan. It is not difficult to find the proper brake setting for the load size and not hard to tweak on the fly. This unit worked like a charm while hauling this large load about 1000 miles. So far it has been worth every penny and I got it at a great price!

by: Erin 02/13/2024

Great. Easy

by: Troy J07/09/2020

Easy to install as I also ordered the wire adapter kit for my truck. Installation was quick and the unit works as I expected. Good investment for safety. Between the phone help with the ordering of the wire adapter kit and You Tube, it took me longer to watch the videos than it actually took to install it.

Ford

I, order wrong wire adapter by mistake, I called etrailer, and spoke to nice lady there and gave the number of the one I had ordered, she looked up what I needed and placed order while I was on the phone with her. Got the adapter and it was the correct one and works perfect. To help others Ford puts a hard shell in there wire to protect against short circuit, it has to be removed before you can plug any adapters into it.

by: John 09/16/2022

Good product, easy fitment into factory Ford storage cubby. Small hole in back of cubby made to allow wire harness to pass through.

by: John 06/29/2018

This harnress was exactly what I ordered. Very pleased as usual.

I have to add that for a while I was sure that I had received the wrong product. Then I watched an Etrailer install video and realized that the plug in my truck had an adapter attached that had to be removed before the harness could be plugged in. 5 minutes later I was done and ready to tow.

by: Brian 10/23/2022

The website was easy to work with. When I needed help I was able to reach someone immediately and they couldn’t be more helpful. The items arrived earlier than expected. Installation was straight forward and works like it should. I would recommend using etrailer for all your towing and trailer needs.

by: Clayton R.02/09/2015

Hayes trailer brake controller, custom wiring adapter, power cord adapter, andersen camp leveler, trailer leveler. All of these items were delivered in a timely manner and as advertized. Will probably order other items in the future.

by: James06/15/2019

I have not had a chance to use the brake controller yet. I did get it installed today. The installation was easy.
The only thing that I might say is that the set up information was not very clear. It seems like there should be a notation somewhere in the set up about how long the lights are going to flash when there is an OC readout on the unit or how to stop the flashing. Maybe I missed something in the instructions.

by: Billy J08/12/2022

this is the best for the money you can buy,I deleted one star because the info on color codes as relates to my 2022 gmc makes it difficult to match color codes with the truck. neither kelsey or gm are great at this identification, particuly in terms of battery/ grounds/ signal /trailer brakes/ etc

by: Richard10/01/2023

Works perfectly! Great service.

by: Joseph07/16/2019

I purchased this item, didn’t read enough to know I needed an adaptor to fit my Chevy Silverado. Cut the wires and spliced them into my Chevy pigtail provided. Thought the item was not working. Called in and was told someone would call me back the next day with instructions. As told, a representative call me and advised me that Chevy has a different color code. After a quick change everything was functioning as hoped thank you e trailer

by: Tevis Laspa06/21/2017

This was a replacement purchase. The original failed at 8 years old. The original started flashing the brake lights every 5 seconds while turned off and parked. Every thing fit back in the original spot. I have not tried the function with a trailer on.

by: Mark08/27/2020

It’s easy to adjust to get the brake controls. I have a 26 foot filth wheel camper and it makes it easy to stop in the event of emergency.

by: John O.12/24/2015

I love it, I have one in both of my trucks. It works on single & double axle brakes., you can adjust the delay & see what you set it on and don't have to guess what it is on. Very easy to adjust brakes for your loads, there again you can also see what you have it set on also. My neighbor used one of my trucks to haul a load hay & loved it . Asked me to order him one for his truck.

by: Kenn07/13/2018

works very well with my 28 ft trailer....easy to install...fit nice in the cuby hole ...with a little mod.... on the lower left side of my dash......looks factory

Etrailer was very helpful with all the info needed to buy the correct connecting cable for my Hayes brake control. Delivery was quicker than expected & of course the cable works as stated.
Great job again!
Thanks Etrailer!

This controller was so easy, mounting it under the dash, put in the 40 amp fuse. And the controller was ready to go. Install time was less than a hour. That included going to the parts place and getting a fuse. I am very happy

by: Art 11/11/2020

we had used this controller in the past, and the new one plugged right in for us

Ask the Experts about this Trailer Brake Controller
Do you have a question about this Trailer Brake Controller?

  • What Does a CL or cl Code Mean on a Brake Controller
  • I did some research and found that on some brake controllers, the "cl" code stands for Current Limit. This indicates that the brake controller has sensed a power requirement greater than its recommended output. This could result from an intermittent short to ground, a faulty brake magnet, or too many brakes connected to the controller. Some brake controllers like the Hayes Engage, # HA81760, are designed for 2 - 6 brakes (up to 3 axles). But others like the Hayes Synchronizer, # HA81725

  • Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller Shows bF Error Code
  • The error codes shown on the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller part # HA81760 can be easily deciphered by looking at the owner's manual. Per the manual, "bF" indicates the blue wire is connected to wrong place, short in wiring / connector, faulty or disconnected breakaway switch. The blue wire is the brake output wire that runs from the brake controller to the 7-way and then from the 7-way to the braking assemblies. Therefore, I recommend tracing this wire to ensure there are no shorts

  • Should the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller Flash OC Without a Trailer Connected
  • The OC you are seeing on the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller # HA81760 is saying you have an open circuit. Specifically it indicates there is no trailer connection detected or the controller is connected to a trailer with electric over hydraulic brakes. Since you have not connected the trailer it will flash for a few minutes or until a trailer is connected. There is nothing wrong with the controller and it is acting as it should.

  • Troubleshooting CP Code on Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller
  • I reached out to my tech contact at Hayes to assist. The CP code on your Hayes Engage # HA81760 is not outlined in your owners manual because it is a calibration setting that is only common to see at the factory. He recommends disconnecting the controller completely and letting it sit for about 10 minutes so it completely discharges and then reconnecting it to see if it will re-calibrate and work properly. If that does not solve the issue, he recommends having it replaced. If you

If your van included the 7-way wiring you will need to check for the wiring taped and tucked under the driver side floor mat up towards the firewall. • Troubleshooting OC Flashing on a Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller
  • First of all you are correct that the OC on the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller # HA81760 does indicate an open circuit. This means the controller is not detecting a trailer or it could be connected to a trailer with electric over hydraulic brake system and needs to be switch to the hydraulic brake mode. If you are not connected to a trailer it is normal for the system to flash the OC error for a few minutes. If you are connected to a trailer and it has electric brake assemblies

  • All brake controllers including the Hayes Engage # HA81760 you have installed will stay turned on, but the LED light for the screen is the only thing being powered and it times out after around 15 minutes so it should not be able to drain your battery. I'd first double check that this is your actual cause of a drain by having a load test run on your electrical system. • Troubleshooting Hayes Engage Brake Controller Showing BF Error Code

Several things might be causing this. The first thing you will want to do is sever the blue wire from a few inches behind the brake controller. Leave enough wire so you can reconnect it later. Then
