4-Way Trailer Connector Installation

Because the color/function of the new connector wires may not match the color/function of your vehicle wires, be sure to use a tester (sold separately) to determine the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness before installing this connector. Once you've determined the matching functions, use the included quick-splice connectors to connect the corresponding wires.

Wiring Configuration

Wire Color Wire Function
Green Right turn and brake light
Brown Tail lights and running lights
White Ground
Yellow Left turn and brake light

Quick Tip:

We install a lot of wiring harness around here, so we thought we'd share a few tips we've picked up over the years:

  • Butt connectors - especially heat-shrink ones - provide the most secure, longest-lasting connection, so we'd recommend you grab a few and swap them out for the quick-splices in this kit.
  • Use a circuit tester on the plug terminals once the harness is installed to make sure everything's working. There's nothing worse than figuring out that you have a bad ground or a faulty connection right before you're about to hit the road.
  • Be sure to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the 4-way plug to protect the terminals from dirt, grime, and corrosion.

Harness is well made and shipped quickly and packaged perfectly

    by:

Took about 15 to 20 mins total to remove all the covers,Matt’s etc
Wiring it in is so easy, only 4 wires,
Use blue butt splice connectors instead of the ones it comes with.
You can buy a small pack of ten for about 3 bucks, by doing this you will never have to worry about a loose connection.
The video tells you what color goes where.
I like to put a small price of electrical tape over every connector I do.
Looks more professional and the wires can never come apart.

    2012 Lexus RX 350

Purchased this plus 18144 mounting bracket for new installation on my 2007 Lexus RX350. Lexus SUV was advertised as having "towing prep package", a $160 option, installed but it wasn't clear if that package included the proper wiring connection under the floor for this product. After digging down (per your excellent video for this vehicle), I found everything as hoped for. Installation was less than 45 minutes including cargo area disassembly and reassembly. Mounted the mounting bracket on plastic surface under the bumper - drilling was easy and mounting appears to be secure. Finished off installation with 30512 flat cover LED tester. All in all a very clean installation. BTW, used 12 inch plastic ties to dress wires under the car so that nothing droops done. My wife is pleased - which goes a long way to confirming the aesthetics of the installation. Thanks for the great videos and products.

    2007 Lexus RX 350

Trailer wire received was as expected however there is one part that could be better. The 4 box type 3M wire connectors that come with it are not the right connectors for this application. When connecting the 4 wires the box connectors are all on top of each other and create a large "bunch". The etrailer "how to video" shows the use of butt connectors which is a much better application. The "how to" instructor acknowledges the 3M connectors that come with the wires but simply says he is going to use butt connectors. So, why not include butt connectors in the simple wire kit? Otherwise all is well and trailer lights work fine, thanks etrailer for your good service.

    2009 Lexus RX 350

I gave ETRAILER and the trailer hitch five stars. The product is of very high quality and the customer service received was awesome. Installed the heavy duty hitch in less than thirty minutes. It was a custom fit for my 2009 Lexus 350RX. The wiring harness for less than $10 was a perfect match since my Lexus was equipped with a towing package. Shipping was SUPER FAST AND FREE!!!

    Lexus

I ordered a more expensive harness initially. I then found that my Lexus was prewired for a harness and needed only this one. Only bummer was I had to pay $11 to ship the other one back and this one did not qualify for free shipping. So my mistake cost me an extra $15.

The product is top notch. The how to videos make installation very easy. I had the hitch installed in a half hour, by myself. The wiring was easy because my rx350 Lexus already had a towing port at the rear of vehicle.

    • Trailer Left Brake Light Does Not Work with Trailer Connected to a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500
Normally when all the lights work on a trailer except one or one side it is a ground issue. Ground problems usually show up when there is more of a draw on the system. The brake light is the brightest light requiring constant higher voltage than the other lights. A weak ground would cause the brake light not to light up. Check the offending tail light for a good ground. Trailer lights usually ground through the mounting studs if there is not an obvious ground wire. In either case, the...

    • Can a 4-Pole Trailer Connector Be Used to Activate Trailer Brakes
In order to actuate the trailer brakes, you'd need a brake controller installed in the vehicle and a 6 or 7-way trailer connector. A 4 pole flat wiring harness like the # 18002 you'd looked at carries 4 circuits- right turn/brake lamp, left turn/brake lamp, running lights and ground. The 4 flat connector doesn't have enough circuits nor the necessary wire thickness or gauge to carry voltage to the trailer bakes. It would seem fairly logical that you could run a wire from the brake lamp...

Ground problems normally show up when there is more draw on a system such as when you have the running lights on and then use another function like a turn signal or brake light. When you state that you never had to use a converter before, do you mean with this particular vehicle? That the brake lights worked with this trailer being towed by this vehicle before, but are not working now? Or do you have a new car, and you have hooked up the trailer connector and are finding that the lights on your boat trailer are not working correctly? Most trailers use what we call a combined lighting system. This means that the brake lamp signal and turn indicator signal is combined...

When you checked the fuse on the truck did you check the truck's running light fuse or the tow package running light fuse? They are independent of each other on most vehicles. There also could be relays associated with the tow package wiring that you can check. A good start was to clean the trailer connector but if there is no power on the running light circuit then the issue is further forward somewhere on the truck. And if it is not a fuse or relay then it is likely a damaged wire somewhere...

It sounds to me like the fuse for your trailer's running lights has blown. The 11:00 pin when looking into your 7-way is for the trailer's running lights. The 1:00 position is for 12 volt power. I found an online copy of an owner's manual for a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado and it shows the correct fuse in location 25. You might verify with your manual but I'd start there. If you find a blown fuse the next step is to determine why it blew. Make sure the 7-way on both your truck and trailer...

No Problem! Each ground wire would simply ground to the trailer frame. You can use a self tapping screw, and make sure that the area you are attaching the wire to is not corroded.
