Installed these before taking a long trip up into the Colorado mountains. Amazing upgrade from my original brakes that kept locking up on me. Never having to manually adjust them is a big plus. Takes the guesswork out the picture.

by:

Replaced obsolete Warner brakes with the Dexter brake kit. Installation was incredibly easy after watching the video

by:

Original order took 30 days to complete. There was an issue with another item in the order which delayed my install. When I went to install these brakes after finally receiving the correct parts on the rest of my order, the left brake was defective. (Almost cut my hand on it) It has now been 2 weeks since I informed them of the defect. The replacement part still has not shipped. I placed a separate order on the very same day, those items came this week.

Not happy at all about this purchase.
I
have done extensive troubleshooting on these brake assemblies but they just don't provide adequate stopping power for the empty trailer much less with a load. Tried multiple vehicles even put a better quality plug than the brand new chinese one from etrailer. Telephone support twice and still no helpful suggestions.

I will have our customer service team reach out to you. I recommend breaking in the brakes. The break-in process applies to both manual adjusting and self-adjusting electric brakes. Its necessary to do this step when you install new brakes because it allows the brake shoes and magnet to seat into the drum. We have a FAQ about adjusting the brakes that covers breaking in the brakes very well.

Everything fit just right wired up just fine takes a little while to break these things in but once they start biting they work really nice I did a little bit more than just replace the brakes I did the shocks, springs and equalizer then re-painted everything underneath too, pretty much rebuilt the entire suspension sure makes a difference. I'm including some before and after pictures here they're probably out of order but them's the berries folks !

I was replacing the 20 year old electric brakes on my utility trailer and choose the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust electric trailer brake kit. The non Dexter brand cost less but after adding shipping and adding the nut kit they were the same as the Dexter brakes with free shipping and the nuts were included with the Dexter kit. This was one the easiest projects I have ever done. I had recently replaced the bearings so getting the brake drum off was a breeze. I used butt connectors with the heat shrink insulation wot connect the power to the bakes. I had thought this would be a two day project but did both sides in about 3 hours. And best of all, the new brakes function as they should, it was like I did not have electric brakes before. Again an easy and well worth it project.

Comments
It has been a year since I installed the Nev-R-Adjust electric trailer brakes and they are still doing a great job. In October Hurricane Michael struck and I have used the utility trailer more than I ever anticipated and have had zero problems from the brakes. Moving equipment & debris became a daily task.

I ordered These Dexter brakes on Sunday and had them by Wednesday. These brakes are very good quality. They came fully assembled with mounting hardware, and fit perfectly. Installing these replacement brakes is a great solution to rebuilding old worn brakes.

Comments
After replacing these brakes last year I moved about 600 miles closer to family. I installed these brake assemblies on my snowmobile trailer that I used to move all our belongings. In total I put about 7000 mi on this trailer during that move. I did not experience any issues with these brakes, not even an adjustment. I would highly recommend this product and would purchase again.

Etrailer readily assist in finding the right parts for my repairs. These brakes were incredibly easy to install and work very well. I haven't used them long enough to know, but I hope the self adjusting feature works as good as on my other vehicles.

Still perfect after a year. etrailer continues to provide support for all my trailer needs, and I have many!

These brake assemblies were an exact fit for my Dexter Axle. The kit came with everything needed to change it out, including the bolts to attach the brake backing plate. Very straightforward instructions. Fast shipping. I would recommend E-Trailer for any parts.

Comments
I recently removed the brake drums to check the brake pad wear and found the pads to be wearing evenly and no adjustment was needed. Self adjusting brakes are the way to go as an easy upgrade to the brake system.

The trailer brake assembly is working great. I put about 6500 miles on our lance camper last year and we are getting ready for another long trip this month. I think the assembly and new drums were the best fix in my case. Thanks again

by:

Replaced the Axel Teknology made in China brakes that failed due to poor grease seals with Dexter brand made in USA. All parts made in a ISO 9001 facility. MAGA!
New brakes perform great.

Comments
Brakes are working great and should for a long time. See more trailer manufacturers are using Dexter now. Buy products made in the USA!

Up here in the Pacific Northwest, brakes will corrode and freeze up over the course of a few winters. These will restore original performance. Easy install takes an afternoon to complete, which for me included repacking the wheel bearings. Four stars instead of five because I wish the brake linings grabbed a little more aggressively.

by:

Installation was very easy, I removed the old brakes and the new went right on. Use a torque wrench to tighten the nuts. I would do the initial adjustment by hand to save time. The self adjusting feature is great, they work well.

by:

Fit is perfect. Chose to replace brakes with assemblies because trailer is 23 yrs old. Good call. The pain was getting old assemblies off. Had to cut fasteners with 4/12" grinder. New Assembly fits bolt pattern. Torqued backing bolts, repacked bearings, installed new grease seals (note buy separate) and took out for break in drive. Brakes work great. I've used assemblies in past and they are the way t go in my opinion.

by:

Good prices. Order filled and shipped quickly. I had to repair the R side backing plate. The self adjust cable came off and one shoe was on improperly. The keeper for the magnet wires was missing, so I had to use one from my old backing plate. I think maybe that backing plate was a return. I don’t like giving a below average review but what it is.

I recently started trying to figure out the parts that I would need for my trailer. When I contacted etrailer the folks there were very knowledgeable and new exactly what I needed to get me up and running again. I would recommend them for your trailer needs and will not hesitate to use them in the future!

I bought and installed Dexter self adjusting brakes on my 17 foot camp trailerabout a year ago. Installation was easy for someone like me with some auto mechanic skills. The brakes work well and I don't need to worry about periodically adjusting them.

by:

Very helpful customer service. Installation was smooth and so are the brakes after about 100 mile wear in.

by:

They get the job done. currently I have to have my brake control set at 7 vs the usual 5.5 but I most likely have a bad connection at the factory wiring

by:

Number one quality parts. Had to replace the axle due to lack of lubrication of the wheel bearings. Love the concept and ease of keeping the wheel bearings supplied with fresh grease on the e-z lube axles.

by:

One of the easiest brake jobs you'll have to do. Squirt a little WD40 on old nuts, or something similar, and let sit a while. Disconnect wires, undo nuts, pull assembly off. Put new assembly on, make sure they are on correct side( it matters, watch video). I ordered the nut and lock washer set, just to be sure. These came with just the nut, so you could get the washers separately. Tighten nuts to proper torque, as stated in directions, connect wires, and done. I also ordered the plug kit for adjustment window. You need two per side. These did come with them, but good for me that I ordered more, as one arrived chopped in half. Can't knock points off for that.

by:

Easy to install and working great after a year. I love the self-adjusting feature! I could never get my old brakes adjusted right and it was obvious that they were not all carrying their fair share of the load when I replaced them.

by:

I called etrailer with little knowledge of the parts I needed for my project. I changed my boat trailer from old surge hydraulic brakes to electric. With the expert help of Bryan W. I received all the proper parts from brakes to bearings. I’m super satisfied with the support and products. I will recommend etrailer to anyone looking for great service

  • Dexter Never Adjust Brakes Initial Adjustment on Tandem Axle Trialer
The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3.5K # 23-468-469 are not designed to be manually adjusted in the way you are describing. There isn't really a way to back off the adjustment because they are designed to automatically adjust as needed to maintain correct tension. Yes, you definitely can replace your current 10 inch brake assemblies with self-adjusting assemblies. The part # 23-468-469 that you referenced would be exactly what you would need. This pair will fit and give you self adjusting brake assemblies. If at first the brakes seem weak what you will want to do is apply them several times while the trailer is moving so that they tension themselves properly. Once you do that they'll never need any type of adjustment.

Larger 12 inch brakes won't fit your hubs. It is more common to see 15 inch rims on a 3,500 pound axle but a long as your bolt pattern matches and you have the clearance 16 inch rims can work. But even the larger rims use the same size brakes because they're using the same size hubs.
