Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

The mounting and hitch are great. Only thing I'd change would be to have the hitch closer to the cars undercarriage. VW TDIs are very limited so it is what it is.

This hitch was installed easily and looks great on my JSW TDI! Ground clearance is perfect and it holds my bike rack very well. It arrived quicker than expected, too! I’m very pleased with this purchase and highly recommend it!

Comments
Not working out so well. I bottom out on steep inclines and every bike rack sways. I had to buy a hitch tightener to stop that. Am now looking to uninstall the hitch.

The ease of installation was by far the big selling point for the purchase. The issue I had with this particular hitch was that the receiver angles downward and when the tow bar was installed there was insufficient clearance when going in and out of drive ways causing the tow bar to drag with my Teardrop trailer attached (empty). On a positive note staff at etrailer.com were quick to to follow up. Another hitch was sent yet construction of the hitch was the same. They accepted the hitch back on a full refund and I ended up purchasing the ECO-hitch, much more time needed to install, yet provided the ground clearance. Completely satisfied with the service provided by etrailer.com.

Nice fit and look - fairly easy to install but one bolt was quite difficult to get lined up. Note that on a VW sportwagon (which is already pretty low to the ground) this hitch is easy to ground out on moderate dips in the road. No damage to the assembly though - it is pretty well built. Wiring is difficult because VW won't give out any info on their electrical harness nor any fuse panel diagrams. Suggest having a trailer shop do the wiring.

Comments
Still very happy with the hitch after a year. Discovered that VW sportwagons in the USA have lowered suspensions compared to Europe. I have purchased and will be installing rear towing coil springs and front leveling springs which will raise the VW 2 inches and prevent most of the bottoming out of the very low rear hitch. Lift kits using air suspension or leaf springs or coil spring spacer s might also help. We tow a 2000 lb A frame popup camper with no trouble.

Honestly, for a VW Jetta, this is the only option for a hitch. Even with the increased ground clearance of this over others, I still catch the bike rack I bought this for on not very aggressive ramps. You have to really deliberately pilot over driveways/parking lot ramps to not scrape against the ground. That said, the install really was stupid easy, it took me closer to 1.5 hours over the suggested 50min, but I was slow and deliberate. I do wish that we could have a video that is either a stand alone "How to Use Fishwire" or an additional edit that takes more than 10 secs to show how to line up the parts that need to be fed via wire.

- 24866
by:

Overall this is a good hitch. It was more difficult to install than I would have liked. I spent a considerable amount of time fishing the bolt through the frame to get it lined up with the hole. Otherwise it went smoothly. It sits a bit low on the car, so you do have to be mindful of steep driveways, etc. I tow a small boat and put a bike rack on the hitch and it works well.

Fit perfectly on my 2006 TDI. Install was a little fiddly on my own, but with a set of ramps and a bottle jack to hold the hitch up, it was installed in about an hour. Each mounting holes uses a different sized bolt and corresponding hardware. Spend a moment or two to make sure you have the right bolt in the right place. The instructions are a little vague, but the video on the product site is excellent. I installed the matching wire harness at the same time. Start to finish install time for the hitch and wiring harness was about 3 hours. I plan to use this to haul a small pop-up camper.

Finish Quality: The finish of the part that shows was very good. The parts that you only see if you install this hitch yourself were not so good. There were chips on some of the corners where bare metal was showing. I was disappointed, but didn't want to hassle with sending it back, so I ended up repainting most of the hitch. Design Quality: I had a lot of trouble getting the 2 bolts on the muffler side started. I had started the bolts on the other side because fishing the bolts through seemed the harder task. Even with that side loosely bolted, it took a while to get enough alignment to start the bolts on the other side. I wonder if the dimensions were off just enough. Also it looks a tad crooked compared to the bottom of the bumper. Not awful, but enough that you notice if you look closely. Direction Quality: With the exception of suggesting starting the muffler side bolts first, the instructions were fine.

Difficult for installation. My friend (a mechanic) and I (I only know the difference between a truck and a car is the size) we both have never put a hitch on 3 hrs later after watching YouTube step by step we finally figured it out. The hard part is the wirey bit, be calm and take your time. I have a VW Jetta so it’s not recommended but it does a good job even when I put too much stuff in my car and it scrapped against the ground it survived and did awesome thank you!!

Super easy to install and fits perfect. It took less than an hour to install thanks to the helpful installation video on the website. Also, the customer service was great when I called in with a couple of questions about the hitch and 2” adapter for my 2012 Volkswagen Jetta Sportswagon TDI, and it came a day earlier than expected.

Trailer hitch receiver is well built however I wish it would give a bit more clearance, seams like there is planty enough room between the bumper and receiver to mount it higher we will see how it will work in the winter

Installation was pretty much like the video on the web site. I did it alone, and if you can it would help to have an extra set of hand as the video states. The splash panel on the passenger side that was removed and not replaced in the video, I did replace after trimming a bit off the back. It is plastic so it was quite easy to cut, I think it is worth replacing. Now, I hope there is an instruction video for the wiring as good...

After we match all the bolts things went smoothly. The instructions could have been printed in a larger font. We refit the protective cover the instructions stated to dischard/return to owner that covered the fuels filter system by just cutting a 1 1/2 slt about 7 inches long that allowed us to finish off the installation using all the orginal holw.

Overall a great product. I was able to install it without a lift or ramp, working off the garage floor. Watch the videos more than once to study the install. Test fit everything and then get to it. There are minor differences in the exhaust hanger and vapor canister location (not installed) on the TDI, but the differences are inconsequential. I used tin snips to cut a channel for the plastic underbody cover and reinstalled it after the hitch install was complete. Very responsive customer support.

First off, etrailer is a fantastic vendor with competitive pricing. The additional resources provided in the way of thorough product descriptions, photos and "how to" videos are simply unmatched. With that being said, the directions that came with my draw tight hitch are worthless. It should read: Step 1) throw directions in the trash; Step 2) watch the installation video on the etrailer website; Step 3) install the hitch. After watching the installation video, the install was a breeze. Side note: you are told not to re-install the passenger side plastic cover but I did. I simply notched the cover to clear the hitch and bolted it back in the original location. In my opinion, it makes for a more factory look, as well as keeps debris and road grime from coming in direct contact with your trunk floor. Being from the North East where salt/rust are a real issue, every little bit helps. Overall I'm very pleased with the hitch. It is very stout and will more than meet my needs.

This is the second hitch I've bought from eTrailer, one for my wife's CRV and this one for my Jetta Sportwagon. No surprises, just a quality hitch delivered promptly by eTrailer. Installation process went just like the video explained. Thanks for the great service.

Comments
The hitch has been working very well - it still looks like new and has performed flawlessly. I use it to pull the folding trailer that I purchased from eTrailer. My only wish is that the receiver receptacle was sized more closely to the size of the ball mount shaft. Presently, the shaft fits somewhat loosely and klunks frequently heard inside the car when the trailer is being pulled, especially when its empty. The loose fit is obvious when installing the ball mount shaft into the receiver. If you have any ideas about how to shim the loose fit, Id like to know.

There are a lot of anti-rattle devices on the market to remedy such a problem. There has to be a certain amount of slack in order to get the device in and out. It's not dangerous by any means, but it can be noisy and irritating. I've added a link to the anti-rattle devices we have. Make sure to look at the ones sized for your hitch.

This is a review on the installation only. Have yet to drive test with a bike rack. As far as installation went - smoothly. I used a YouTube video to install which was much better than the instructions. Seeing is much easier than reading. As can be seen by my included photo - the hitch is very hidden and blends in well with my car.

This is a well built hitch with nice welds and powder coat. For my installation, I needed to do no drilling, and all needed hardware was included. All needed holes lined up perfectly. The directions could be a bit clearer but they worked. I only plan on using it to haul my bike rack. I'm certain it's sturdy enough to haul a small trailer with but I have other vehicles for that. I don't feel the need to put added stress on my VW transmission. For the price, I say it's well worth it.
