Looks like a fairly good quality measuring instrument. I like the fact that it has a zero re-set capability if and when the calibration gets a little out of whack.

  • What Information is Needed to Add Brakes to a Trailer
To add brakes to the front axle on your trailer I would need to know the weight capacity of your axle (which can be found stamped on the axle if you don't know it off-hand), as well as the part numbers of your Inner and Outer Bearings and you Grease Seal on your idler hub. The bolt pattern of your hub and size of your tire/wheel would be helpful as well. If you cannot find the part numbers on your bearings or seal then you can measure the B, C, and D locations on your spindle (see attached...

Start by removing your current your hub and looking at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. Harbor Freight trailers are unique. They don't have any industry standard parts on them so replacement parts are very difficult to find. It may be possible to replace your hubs with a different one that will fit your spindle measurements, but you'd need to use a digital caliper like # 301-17068 to check the spindle at the bearing locations and the grease seal.

In regards to determining axle capacity, the portion of the axle that will be measured is the cross beam, or rather the tube that connects the two sides together.
