Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Brakes 4-44-1 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at a brake mounting flange for a 3" round axle. The brake mounting flange gets welded to the spindle at the end of the axle to provide secure mounting plates for brake assemblies. This flange works with a 12" diameter brake assembly. It's going to come with the bolts already pressed in you can see that it's a five-bolt mount. The bolt pattern is 5 on 3-7/8", so that means that we have five bolts, and then from the center of this one to the center of this one, as well as this one to this one, it's going to measure 3-7/8". Center on center between these two is going to be 3". This is designed to fit 3" diameter axles. The bolt diameter is 3/8", so this will work with 4.400 lb, 6,000 lb regular duty, 6,000 lb heavy duty, 7,000 lb and 7,200 lb axles.

The diameter of the pilot hole, so the hole right here at the center, that's going to measure 2-3/4" in diameter. The flange itself is made from a durable steel construction, it's going to measure 1/4" thick. Taking a look at the overall measurements. Going side to side, it's going to measure about 4-1/2". Going this direction, that's going to give us a measurement of about 4-3/16". That's going to do it for today's look at the brake mounting flange for a 3" round axle.

Upon inspection if receiving my recent order I noticed that the packaging was sub par at best. The box didn't seem to be visually damaged externally, however the inside told a different story I ordered 2 sets of electronic brakes. Some hardware and a tub of packing grease. If you see the pictures attached, everything was thrown into a massive box without proper packing material and some of the items show signs of shipping damage. Some brakes were out of alignment and the grease canister was smashed almost to the point or rupture. For such a big company I would expect a little more care to be given to the several hundred dollars worth of parts in my order.

Comments
I sincerely apologize that the order delivered in this manner. I will have our customer service team reach out and share this with our shipping department.

High quality and well made. Made to fit the spindle of a 3" Axle. It fit, but the brakes would have been so far out on the axle that the hub would not even bolt on. Glad I checked before welding. Further investigation found that I have a shorter than average spindle length.
THESE MOUNTING FLANGES WOULD NOT WORK FOR ME AND WERE RETURNED!

Mobile home axles usually come in two "basic" sizes. The "smaller" size spindle, with the 1.9" grease seal and or 1-3/8" inner bearing (the larger spindle "usually" has a 2.25" grease seal and 1-3/4" inner bearing)
If you have the Larger axle, with the 1-3/4" inner bearing and larger grease seal then this mounting flange should work.

I had the 1.9" Grease Seal and therefore a shorter spindle length, so I had to weld the brake backing plate directly to the 3" axle tube.
THESE MOUNTING FLANGES WOULD NOT WORK FOR ME AND WERE RETURNED!
I put the brake assembly on the axle, reinstalled hub and bearings then tightened down. Next, put the brake assembly in the hub and adjust brakes tight to the drum while keeping both concentric. When both are tight together make sure brake adjusting holes are at bottom towards the ground and weld brake backing plate to the axle.

I've been restoring a 1979 Hudson trailer on which the brake backing plates were welded right to the axles. That makes rebuilding the brake system impossible unless you cut off the exiting material and install these flanges. This is pretty much the only way to do it.

These flanges are stout -- 3/16" plate, laser cut for precision. If you install them properly you won't have to worry about the flanges failing.

These brake flanges have to be absolutely square and concentric on the axle, and the0y need to be at the proper depth relative to the spindle. I think the best way to get it right is to dry-fit everything and then jig the flanges and the brake backing plates in position with magnets or a similar means. When everything is in alignment, tack weld the flanges to the axles, then take all the other parts off and finish your welds.

by:

This is an exelent flange if you want to convert an axel that is not allredy a breaking axel it worked great for me

by:

Just what I needed

by:

Works perfectly on my old trailer which had welded on backing plates. I scanned it and was able to build three more with the plasma cutter.

by:

Careful if you get this product. I specified for a 3" tube. What I got was ID 2.754". Thankfully I have a lathe and was able to bore it out to size.

Would be nice if the parts room checked the sizes before they send instead of grabbing what was on the shelf.

Comments
The part you received is correct. The flange is for use on 3 inch axles, but it does not mount to the axle. The spindles on 3 inch axles measure 2.75 on the shoulder where the flange should be welded. It should be mounted to the shoulder of the spindle right next to where the spindle is welded to the axle.
-- Etrailer Expert Patrick B - 11/28/2012

by:

It is a flange for a 3” round axle. It is to be welded onto the axle. Unfortunately, the inside diameter is ONLY 2.75 “. It will not fit directly onto the axle unless you do some serious grinding. It is possible that I do not know how it should be attached but....

Comments
Thank you for your review. The brake flange is designed to fit onto the spindle just behind the seals not on the 3 axle.

I am putting on electric brakes on Mobile home axles and needed a way to mount the new backing plates. This seems to be the way to get it done. I had great help from Greg S on how to go about it.

by:

All the parts I ordered have arrived as promised and worked as they should, I will order from etrailer again as needed.

by:

Bolts like up perfectly. The center hole needs to be bored out to be used on mobile home axles.
They can also be a challenge to weld square to the tube.

by:

This produce was delivered in record time. It is exactly what was needed to complete my project and get me back on the road with little to no down time. Thanks to all the team members at etrailer for their help.

  • Is a Gap Between a Trailer Brake Backing Plate and Drum Normal
The slight gap you see is normal. The drum is not supposed to make contact with the brake mounting plate. There are some instances when mixing brands of brakes, hubs, and axles, that won't line up properly but in this case it is normal. I did also run it by another set of eyes just to make sure and we both came to the same conclusion.

  • Bolt Pattern of 5 Bolt Brake Mounting Flange for Trailer Brakes
The bolt pattern for a 5 bolt brake mounting flange, like # 4-44-1 is 5 on 3-7/8 inches. What that means is it measures 3-7/8 inches from one corner to its diagonal counterpart. From hole to hole across the bottom is 3 inches and between the others is about 2-1/8 inches. I've made a diagram that may help.

  • Installation of Redline Brake Mounting Flange # 4-44-1
On the Redline Brake Mounting Flange, part # 4-44-1, the five bolts are press fit into the flange. To be removed they would have to be pressed out with a hydraulic press. Once they are pressed out the bolts are not to be used again. So you would not want to remove the bolts from the flange. The flange needs to be welded on concentric and square. Square meaning the flange must be a true 90 degrees from the spindle and concentric meaning the gap around the spindle must be the same 360 degrees...

  • Dimensions for a Brake Mounting Flange for a 3 Round Axle
The measurements of the Brake Mounting Flange for a 3 inch Round Axle, part # 4-44-1, are correct, in that the inner diameter of the flange is 2-3/4 inches. This is because the flange will be mounted to the spindle, not the axle. You will need to check the Outside Diameter of your spindle, as this will mount on the spindle.

I can see how that would throw you off. The Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle part # 4-44-1 is designed to mount onto the spindle just behind the seals it doesn't sit all the way inboard so it's not around the entire axle. I've included a picture to show you what I mean.

So we have brake mounting flanges, but they are all weld-on applications as opposed to bolt-on. Also, I did want to mention a 2,000 lb axle is typically 1-3/4 inches in diameter, and for that the correct part is the Brake Mounting Flange for 1-3/4" Round Trailer Axles - 2K # 4-34. • Which Brake Mounting Flange for 3 inch Diameter Axle Beam
Given your 3 inch diameter axle beam, you have a 5200, 6000 or 7000 lb rated axle, which is compatible with a 12x2 inch brake assembly. A 12x2 brake assembly would use a standard 5 bolt brake mounting flange. For a 3 inch diameter axle beam, I'd recommend using # 4-44-1 for 3 inch axles. You'll want to have a professional welder who's experienced in trailer work install these. If they aren't installed so they're perfectly straight and concentric, you'll have no end of trouble.

  • How To Choose The Correct Brake Mounting Flange For Your Trailer Axle
Absolutely, in order to install a 5 bolt brake mounting flange, you will need the Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle part # 4-44-1. This brake flange bracket is designed to work with an axle diameter of 3". If your axle is smaller than this, or you want a 4 hole mounting flange. You will need the Brake Mounting Flange part # 4-35 for a 2-3/8" axle and the Trailer Brake Mounting Flange part # 4-50 for 3-1/2" axle diameters. I recommend having a professional welder perform this task...

  • Will Brake Mounting Flanges be Installed on New Axle
Whether the axles have the brake mount flanges on them will depend on what you purchased. However, since they're 6,000 pound axles it's fairly likely the flanges will be there. If not, we carry # 4-44-1 for 6,000 pound axles. It will need to be welded to the axle at a trailer shop because it needs to be perfectly square and concentric. As long as your current brake actuator is for disc brakes and functioning properly there's no need to replace it. However, if you previously had drum...

  • Replacement Brake Mounting Flange and Assemblies for 2003 Wehaul Snowmobile Trailer
Most likely what you need for a brake flange is the part # 4-35 which has the standard 4 on 2-7/8 inch bolt pattern measured on center but you should measure yours again to be sure. This is a very common bolt pattern whereas 3 inches is not an option that we carry. This also fits the standard 3,500 l trailer axle diameter of 2-3/8 inches. So based on that the assembly set that you'd need is the part # AKEBRK-35-SA. This is a self adjusting set of brakes that fits a 10 inch hub/drum.
