Video Transcript for Hopkins Trailer Wiring Adapter Installation - 2014 GMC Acadia

Today on our 2014 GMC Acadia, we're going to be installing the Hopkins 4-pole to 5-pole trailer wiring adapter. This is the short version. The part number is 47515. The 4-pole to 5-pole adapter is going to be a perfect solution for converting your current 4-pole trailer plug-in to work with the 5-pole surge brake style connector. Basically, we just plug in this to our standard 4-pole, and we're going to run our blue wire up, and we're going to tie it in to the reverse light. Now as you can see here, there is a quick disconnect. If need be, if you're going to go back to at standard 4-pole trailer, we can simply pull this off and our wiring will be there for when we need to use it the next time. Then, we can just plug it right back in, and we'll be ready to go after hooking it into our 4-pole. It comes with about that much wire.

You can see it's about 3-1/2' to 4'. We've added in our own stretch of wire here. Just to give you an idea, all you're going to need is a butt connector, and this is going to work for just about any application. We'll start at the top, and we're going work our way down on our install. We'll open the rear door on our Acadia. Our reverse lights are in the rear hatch.

What we're going to do is get out power from right here at this main cord that goes from the vehicle to the outside hatch. To do that, you just pull up on the black rubber, and then, we'll just slide that grommet up our wire a little bit. That will give us the access we need to get into our wires. There's some black cloth tape right there, if you cut that that will usually allow those to open up pretty well. When doing this, be sure not to nick or cut the wire at all.

You want to go right in between them. Now, there's an easy test that we'll perform now, and basically, we're going to check our wires in here to determine which one gives us a power signal when the vehicle is in reverse. Some of these are going to have constant 12-volt power that run through them. Some of the are only going to be when the blinker is on or when the emergency flashers are on or something. You want to be sure that which ever one that you're going to hook into only comes live or give you a signal when the vehicle is in reverse. With somebody sitting in our vehicle, we've had them put the vehicle in reverse without it running and place their foot on the brake so we're not in any danger. We just need to run through and check our wires.

With the vehicle in reverse, if you get a signal . I get a signal there. Now, we'll have them take the vehicle out of reverse. I'm still getting a signal. That's not going to do any good for us. The darker blue wire that runs through here . There's 2 lighter blue wires, and a darker blue wire is the one we need. I'm going to tap into that one. Please put the car in reverse. It's going to come live when the vehicle goes in reverse. Now back into park, it goes back quiet when the vehicle is in park. That's the one we're going to tap right into. Here's our quick splice that we're going to use. The dark blue wire we just found will go in one side, our add on wire that we're going to install is going to go on the other side, and then, we press down on that silver tab locking both of them in. Then, we'll bring our cover over the top. That's the wire want to use. Shove that in. Now, it's just a matter of using a pair of pliers to squeeze that silver tab down. Once that tabs down flush, we'll bring our snap cover over. Now, we can get that put back into place. If need be, you can cut out a little groove in that grommet, but a lot of times, it will just seat back in there without having to do that. We'll bring our wire down. We're going to run it right along the weather stripping, and then, it will duck in right here behind our taillight housing. As you can see, it's tucked in nicely behind that strip all the way up and around. That's actually going to come down and hold it in place for us. Now, let's pull off the 2 caps and 2 screws holding our taillight assembly in. I'll use a 7mm socket and back that bolt out on the top and bottom holding that in place. Then, we'll pull out on that housing allowing it to sit here on the side. Please use caution when doing that. You don't want to get it into any pinches or any tight spots there. I'm going to bring this wire down below . See this bottom clip I'm going to bring it right below that, because I don't want to run the risk of it getting pinched when I tighten that down. Then, take our quick disconnect side and just start feeding it down. It's pretty open along there, so we'll be able to find it when we get down there. We'll feed all that down and in. Once we get our taillight back in place, we're going to be done up here. Then, let's replace the 2 bolts that hold it in place. Then, of course, we'll replace our caps. Here, you can see just a small little V-notch cut in there. That's really going to help our grommet stay in place and come down pretty much back to flush. The only wire we'll have exposed is going to be that short little piece right there. Here, you can see our blue wire peeking out at us. Let's just bring that on over here towards the center. You can feel up in there and see if you got all your slack out, and everything feels fine. We'll bring this on over. There's an old 4-pole line that went over to the other side is right there. We'll run it along with it and get it over here pretty close the back of our standard 4-pole. Now, if you've got a couple zip ties laying around at home, it's a good idea just to kind of wrap them around. We'll secure it right on to our hitch here, tuck it around the back, and secure it one more time here in the middle to where that connector will be located pretty close to our 4-pole connector. If we ever need to remove it down the road, it will be easy to find right there. We won't have to look too much. We'll get a zip tie around that. There it is hanging out for us right where we want it. Now, let's make our 5-pole connection there. We'll bring our blue wire around the back, quick connect. The new 4-pole adapter will plug right into our factory 4-pole. Now, our 5-pole is here and ready to go. Of course, we're going to clean this up a little bit. This, I wouldn't secure to the actual hitch if you plan on taking it on and off. This would be good just to bring whatever excess wire that you've got, make a little bundle of it there, that way you don't have to take a zip tie off every time you want to unplug that 5-pole adapter. Let's clean up the extra zip ties we've got hanging around here. Get the one that other guy missed. Now you'll see, we're ready for operation, ready for use if we ever need to hook onto a trailer that maybe doesn't have that 4-pole brake, disconnect there, disconnect there, and that's really all there is to it. When it's time back ready for action, slide it on, bring that back around, and that'll connect our reverse light circuit. Now, we'll run a test here to make sure all of our lights are going to work. We'll connect our tester to the ground outlet and then test our running lights. It's going to give us a constant signal. We'll now test our left blinker. It should have an intermittent signal. Then, our right blinker, same signal on that side. Now, we'll test those same 2 for our brakes. As you can see, we're going to get a nice strong steady signal. Lastly, we'll have our partner throw the vehicle in reverse, and we'll check for our reverse signal. Perfect, everything is going to work as it should. Now when we hit reverse, this is going to send a signal to our trailer deactivating the brakes so we can back up, get our boat launched in the water, and then when we pull out and go back into drive, it will reactivate our brakes for us. With everything working as it should, that's going to complete today's installation of the Hopkins 4-pole to 5-pole trailer wiring adapter, part number 47515, on our 2014 GMC Acadia. .

Adapter 4-Pole to 5-Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter - Shorter - 47515

This simple adapter works exactly as intended. The only drawback is if you need to utilize your trailer’s back up lights the process of attaching the extra wire is not easy. Since my trailer doesn’t have back up lights I simply skipped that step. Otherwise it’s truly plug and play.

I had a 2 inch trailer hitch and 4 pole flat wire harness professionally installed on my 2001 Dodge Ram Pickup. When I bought my boat the trailer was wired for a 5 pole flat harness. Took my truck back to the installer to have the harness exchanged and was told that there was no 5 pole flat harness made for my 2001 truck. I asked about splicing a 5 pole flat harness to the 4 pole flat harness and was told by the installer that they don't do splicing and because the 4 pole harness was already installed I couldn't get a refund. So the search was on to fix this problem. Stumbled upon the etrailer E-commerce site and found what I was looking for. A 4 pole flat to 5 pole flat adapter. The price was right, the service was 5 Star and I received the adapter in 4 days which was perfect. I had time to install it, and get my boat on the water that weekend. Thanks George J. I will be using etrailer for all my trailer needs.

Easy to install… video was very helpful!

This product is very well made. Instructions are a bit brief, but plenty of info online to get it installed. The reverse wire on my car was too small to work with the splice, but I connected them directly w/ a "T". Worked flawlessly with my trailer. The length of the wire on the adapter allows you to make the connection INSIDE the car which will surely extend the life of the connection. Overall great and simple design.

Comments
Still works but seems sporadic at times. Will investigate my hydraulic servo for the brakes to ensure they are locking out as required to reverse.

Product as advertised. Shipping slightly delayed but that should be expected with the driver shortage. Have always received quality products from Etrailer.

Works as advertised. Needed a 5 pole for by boat trailer and this did the job. Had it installed in 30 minutes

Etrailer is exceptional to work with

by:

I purchased this for my 2019 Subaru Outback, but I have not installed it yet because I have not had to pull the trailer that requires that adapter yet. However I did purchase one of these for my Toyota Highlander several years ago, and it worked perfectly. It takes the signal for the reverse light and uses it to deactivate the trailer brakes so that you can back up without physically going out to the trailer and locking out the brakes.

by:

I've used this product before with good luck, yet the contacts on the last one I ordered corroded in less than a year, which was disappointing.

by:

This is the perfect product for when you already have 4-pole trailer wiring but simply want to add a 5th wire for powering the reverse lockout on surge brake trailers or just the backup lights on a truck bed converted into a trailer. It plugged right into the factory connector on my 2011 Ford Ranger. Only ONE splice was needed: the reverse light wire in the taillight. You also have an additional location for wiring in an aftermarket backup camera IF the vehicle's electrical system allows for the extra current. Only complaint is that it didn't come with its own connector cover, but I was able to get that off of etrailer too!

Comments
Still in use, stays well protected with the connector cover, no problems to date!

The five-to-four harness adapter was exactly what we needed to be able to tow our tent trailer with our car rather than our motorcycle. And it arrived so quickly! Thanks for helping us solve the problem so easily and economically.

Comments
Still working great! Thanks again for the perfect solution to our problem.

This is perfect! Instead of having other (longer) 4 to 5 pole adapters that hang and have to be tucked somewhere, this one simply disconnects and is stowed away until needed. Thank you for the great service!

by:

I put this on my 2016 Kia Sorento. Do yourself a favor and watch this instructional video "Hopkins Trailer Wiring Adapter Installation - 2014 GMC Acadia". Another great tip for my application is to buy an extra 20 feet of 16 guage wire. I ran the wire from the tailgate on the inside of the weather stripping and snaked the wire into the utility tray in under the back flip up compartment. When I need to hook up the adapter - I just run it out of the tailgate and hook it up. This keeps the adapter out of the elements when not in use.

by:

This adapter is wonderful! It continues to work like a charm, was easy to install, and the price was right. Needed it for hauling my boat trailer that has hydraulic brakes. It has made it through all kinds of Wisconsin and Minnesota weather on my Jeep Wrangler and will last like any other wiring part that is exposed to the elements. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to adapt 4 pole to 5 pole trailer wiring.

by:

This adapter works great. I didn't know what I was going to do. I have a couple of boats and trailers, some of them have the lock up breaks that need to be plugged in to operate. With this little beauty installed I can now plug in all of my towable vehicles without rewiring for each. I looked at every auto and trailer shop around me for resolution but could not find anything. Thanks etrailer, you made my life a little easier.

by:

Great product! I have a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that only has a four pole flat connector. I have a boat thats needs a five pole because it has surge brakes. This was the perfect solution. I just had the fifth wire connected to the back up light and plugged this five to four pole adapter that was already on the vehicle. Problem solved. It came quickly. I accidently ordered two and I got a call from Etrailer questioning my order. I thanked them and said I only needed one. They saved me the cost of the second adapter when most companys would have just sent them both- and charged me for two.

by:

Fits good, professional looking installation. I did it myself in the driveway with some help from my wife and a roller jack and some jack stands. Only thing I had to do that I don't think was mentioned in the video was to unhook the tailpipe from the bracket & lower the tailpipe as far as it would go to push the hitch in place to line up with the holes.

by:

easy instal, works great!

by:

Works as promised. Easy to install, easy to use.

Allows me to use my 5-pin Boat Trailer plug with the vehicle's 4-pin set-up.

Adds the extra Reverse Line to turn off trailer brakes when backing up, wouldn't be without it!

by:

been searching for a 4 to 5 flat adapter and yours is perfect. good instructions and follow up was great. I will check with y'all for any future trailer needs.

Arrived very quickly with the basic shipping. Adapeter seems to be made well. Just googled the diagram of the wiring harness to figure out which wire to spice into (white with the green stripe). Install only too about 5 minutes all said and done.

by:

This product was everything that is says that it is. Suggestion for hatchback owners, though. See if your reverse lights are in the hatchback or on the fender panels before purchasing this product. If they are in the hatchback, as in the 2014 Escape, then you will need to purchase a longer adapter or additional wiring as the routing of the wires to the closest reverse wire is substantial.

by:

Just exactly what I needed to deactivate surge brakes on my boat trailer so I can backup. Easy conversation from a 4 pin to 5 pin connection that is neat and clean. This product is made so you can just unplug and use your 4 pin connector with no problem. Price is great and product is good quality. Shipping was fast and packaged well.

  • How Long is the Wire that Comes with Adapter for Back-up Light Connection?
The wire attached to the 4/5-Way measures 19-1/2 inches from the 5-Way to the red single pole connector. The loose piece of wire that runs from the red single pole to the reverse light measures 35 inches. In total, from the 4/5-Way to the reverse light you have 54-1/2 inches of wire.

  • Can the 5th Wire of the Adapter 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter Be Cut Off if Not Needed
Usually, on a boat trailer with a 5-Way trailer connector, the 5th wire goes to an electric reverse lock out on a surge coupler. This is so when you put the vehicle in reverse to back up, it will not allow the trailer brakes to engage so the trailer can move. If you do not need the blue wire on the Adapter 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter, # 47515, you can just tape it up and and stow it out of the way. I would not cut it off because you may need it in the future. If you do find...
