Yes, if you:

  • Have a folding carrier that sits pretty close to the back of your Subaru when it's folded
  • Prefer a hitch that looks like it came from the factory and doesn't call too much attention to itself

No, if you:

  • Worry that you might harm the fascia when you remove it to get this hitch installed

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario. Technical Support

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

Went with the drawtite. Best value in my opinion..the eco hitch would have been my choice(I just think it looks a bit cooler and sits more at a factory height tow hitch..about an inch difference from the draw tite and eco hitch) but the drawtite looks super clean once installed!
It’s not a hard install and requires basic minimus tools. The video is real helpful. Tow infinity and beyond!

Sturdy! Always glad I made the purchase. Thing looks brand new still

Subaru Outback Wagon

Thanks for reaching out. It speaks highly of your company to do so. The hitch and wiring harness fit my Outback perfectly. We had a fun summer pulling our kayak trailer and are looking forward to hitting the road again soon.

1. I ordered the Draw-Tite hitch from etrailer based on the added feature of the extra set of pin holes for the stabilization pin. The hitch I received and installed did not have the extra pin holes. See pictures below. Unfortunately I didn’t’ realize this until I completed the installation. The packaging and instructions had the correct item number. But to tell you the truth I don’t know what I received…. Emailed customer service but the person who replied back was clueless… I am now shopping for a cargo rack but will most likely buy from that tool store in the northern part of the country.
2. Like others measure twice, cut once. I didn’t need to cut the center hole on the bottom of the fascia.. Used two zip ties to attach it since I couldn’t line up the hole sufficiently for the push pin.

Hi Tom, Thanks for your feedback! Draw-Tite updated their hitches and no longer have the second hole for the J-pin.

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

Looks good on my rig. Took a little over 2 hours. Need a second person when moving the number cover around. Install video is much better than the instructions.

Got this hitch early this year, had it attached by my mechanic cause I figured he had more tools than I do. I just recently got a bike rack for it and all I can say it that it’s rock solid! Through rough gravel roads I’d peek in the rear view mirror and the bikes are solid back there. (A testament also to the 1Up rack. What I also love about it is that since it’s attached to the inner steel bumper, it’s practically invisible except for the receiver. A great product at much less cost than a hitch from the dealer.

Same as the day it was installed! Ill be sure to get this hitch mount again when its time to trade in my vehicle!

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

The hitch was very easy to install on my 2019 Outback utilizing the video and instructions that came with it. I also installed the Curt wiring harness and I installed everything and was done and completely picked up in less than 3 hours.

The trailer hitch is built Rock Solid. It will most likely Outlast my car. Excellent product fairly easy installation.
Richard - 06/29/2021

- Fairly easy installation, though the instructions say to cut the bumper cover right in the middle to make room for the hitch, but the opening has to be offset to fit properly.
- The hitch is welded a bit on an angle to the frame and is not square and plumb, but I think it will work ok, though a bit annoying.
- The website installation video shows an additional hole on the hitch for stability, but my unit did not have this. A bit disappointing since that would have helped keep the movement and rattle down.

The manufacturer has eliminated the second hole in the receiver that was designed to be used with their J pin lock.

2018 Subaru Forester

The Draw-Tite hitch is an excellent fit and looks great this is the hitch I have purchased from etrailer the previous one was the Etrailer brand for a 2015 Suraru Forester and was very satisfied with that also.
The independent mechanic took 2.5 hrs. for the installation and required the removal of the entire rear bumper facia a time aconsuming task as expected.
The lable on the Hopkins wiring harness is outdated (2014). It worked fine but I would suggest that etrailer attach a note to the product packaging noting that it also fits the 2018 Subaru. Thanks for the fine products.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

5 stars for etrailer. They shipped super fast, and it was superbly packaged. Great customer service! The hitch gets 0 stars as I will not be able to install. Problems encountered on my 2017 Outback: First I had to cut the wires to remove the tail lights - I have no wire clips! Then after removing bumper clips I find out that the mud flaps will have to be removed to get bumper cover off (not in instructions). To do this I have to remove both back wheels first to access the philip head screws, and I don't have a way to do this! So spliced taillights back together, and 5 hours wasted and the hitch is still in my living room. Wish I had purchased the hitch that goes under exhaust system.

This hitch is going to be a more involved installation then the other hitches that we have to offer for the 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon. I recommend hitch part # e98847
etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Matte Black Finish - Class III - 2"
which does require drilling however will be an easier install.
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 03/21/2022

The trailer hitch itself is easy to install. Any complications come from removing and reinstalling bumpers and facia around the rear bumper. But overall, it was an easy install and the hitch has worked flawlessly in its intended application of attaching a bicycle rack.

I’m very happy with this receiver. It took about 1.5 hours to install. The instructions were excellent. The toughest part of the project was removing the ‘push button’ fasteners that hold on the fender and bumper parts; mine were packed with road dirt which made them hard to remove so you may consider flushing these areas with water prior to starting.
Also, when I notched the bumper plastic, I predrilled 1/2” holes to establish the inside corners. This left a 1/4” radius instead of a sharp corner in the notch. My thought is that sharp corners tend to concentrate stresses and possibly lead to cracks.
Keep track of the push button fasteners…there are two different sizes to remove/reinstall.
The receiver bolted to the car chassis perfectly.

Easy install and I have had a bike rack on this hitch since it was put in a year ago.

I have a Subaru Outback 2011 and am not particularly mechanically inclined, so I would recommend this to anyone.

Still totally worth it!

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Appears to be a well made product. We have not yet used it on my wife’s 2017 Outback 3.6R - the hitch receiver we purchased has only been used to carry a bike rack and move trailers around the property.

2014 Subaru Outback Wagon

We are very happy with this hitch. Price was reasonable, and our mechanic said it was very easy to install on our 2014 Subaru Outback. We just took our first trip using this hitch for our bike rack, and it was awesome.

I was very pleased with the quality of the trailer hitch for the price and the ease of putting it on my Subaru Outback! I know how to use tools, but not a car person, so the video and written instructions made it simple to do. I am excited to use my bike rack or even toe a small trailer.

It has been a year since I installed the trailer hitch and it has been put to the test by driving from MD to CO with a [moving company] trailer. It passed the trailer test and I use it primarily for my Rocky Mount bike rack. Definitely got my moneys worth from the hitch and look forward to using it for years to come!

2013 Subaru Outback Wagon

I ordered my hitch and got it just 4 days later. I backed the car into the barn out of the sun at 9:45 and had the hitch installed and the car back on the road by 11:30 by myself. The hardest part was getting the clug clips out because of the dust and mud. Putting the bumper cover back on was time consuming, too, but I wanted to make sure everything fit correctly. I even located and replaced a missing plug to make sure all holes were filled. Installing the Tekonsha wiring harness went as per instructions, except I had to remove one cargo hook to allow the fender cover to lift enough to gain access to the vehicle harness. I ran the trailer plug under the interior padding and under the door gasket and will secure it to the hitch receiver with tie wraps. Looks good on my 2013 Outback 3.6R imited (don't mind the dust from the barn floor).

We dont tow often, but this hitch allows us the flexibility to tow a small trailer and UTV when we need to go outside the county. It is an excellent investment and does not hang out in the way.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

I purchased the Draw-Tite Max Frame Hitch Receiver for my 2017 Subaru Outback. The people at Etrailer were great to deal with and helped me to make my choice in purchasing the correct hitch receiver for my Outback. I wanted a hitch that was like a custom fit and the Draw-Tite Max is the one. The instructions were easy to understand and it took about an hour to install. The service from Etrailer was great and they were always there to help me with my questions. I also purchased the Hopkins Plug in simple wiring harness which was very easy to install.

Looks great and works great . One great hitch.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Underwhelmed, Painted surface was chipped in numerous locations, (no paint chips found in the shipping box) surface rust starting to form on one spot. The receiver tube is welded in place at an angle (twisted to the left).

I know that when the hitches are shipped to us they are shipped stacked together in large pallets which means that at times they arrive in less than pristine condition. I will have our customer service department reach out to you. I recommend touching up the affected areas with a rust resistant paint like Rustoleum to help protect against corrosion.

Extremely impressed with etrailer and their service. I saved hundreds of dollars thanks to the instructional videos on installing the draw tite hitch on my 2013 Subaru outback. The website is easy to navigate and loaded with relevant information and reviews. I was able to install my hitch in a little over 1.5 hours. The ordering process and communication is excellent. I received my item in just a few days EXACTLY as promised. Will definitely purchase from etrailer again.

I couldn't be any more pleased with the Draw-Tite Hitch and With the detailed instructions, ease of the install (no drilling, didn't have to touch the mufflers, etc) and how completely hidden the hitch is (except for the receiver of course), the Draw-Tite seems like the right answer regarding which hitch to get!

2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

1 year later and it is still going strong. This Draw-Tite hitch fit my 2018 Subaru Outback perfectly and the step by step video provided by was spot on! Having never installed a hitch before, watching the video provided me with the skills needed to get the job done right. One modification to the steps, instead of using a Dremel drill to cut the bumper, I used tin snips which provided a much cleaner and steady cut, just food for thought.

2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

Well made. Very happy with my choice and installation. 2018 Outback. It took a while to remove the bumper cover and bumper but only because I was very careful not to break any connectors. I did not break anything and it went back together easily. I tow a 16.5’ aluminum fishing boat with a 40hp that weighs about 2200#. Very stabile setup.

2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

I have recently ordered, received and installed a trailer hitch and roof rack for my 2018 Subaru Outback. Shipping was in good time, order was correct and installation was easy. Great instructions and how-to videos online were very informative. Etrailer will be first on my list when I need something for my cars.

No problems at all with my hitch.

Subaru Outback Wagon

Perfect fit on my wife’s Outback. Installation is straightforward and it’s very low profile. As long as you’re comfortable cutting the bumper, the hidden nature of this hitch is its best feature.

I installed this on my 2017 Subaru outback . This is an excellent product at excellent price. I like the fact that most of it is hidden behind the bumper. You only see the lower portion of the receiver. As for the instruction video I think it's a little under estimation on the time 45 minutes start to finish. It took me 2 hours. I've purchased hitches from your company before and always receive quality products.and fast service.

They are vey comparable in quality and the trimming of the lower fascia is in the same location. The Draw-Tite hitch is my recommendation based on the towing capacity and tongue weight rating as it is just a stronger hitch even though it is lighter at 35 lbs compared to the EcoHitch at 49 lbs. • Why Does Trailer Hitch Tongue Weight Differ From Vehicle Tongue Weight
Our trailer hitches are rated separately from the vehicle they fit. Basically they design the hitch to fit the vehicle and to be as strong as possible, they determine the capacities of the hitch, and then that's what they list for it. BUT, the overall towing capacity of a vehicle is always the lowest rated component so if your vehicle says 200 lbs tongue weight is the limit that is the limit regardless of how strong the hitch it.
