Note: Trailer wheels that are smaller than 15" and have 5 bolts, have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Exactly what I needed, delivered promptly and at a competitive price point. I especially appreciated the lug pattern template to ensure what I ordered would fit the wheels I had.

After ordering from parts houses and getting expensive wrong grease seals, for my boat trailer, I found a websit e trailer, I called and talked to Jennifer, she knew what I needed right away, I ordered a hub with races, bearings, grease seals and lug nuts. Jennifer placed the order for me and with end two hours I was notified by email that my order was shipped. The third day my order was delivered to my door. No damage, was packaged very good. And was right parts. I will be using etrailer again. I recommend this co to my friends.

20/20 hindsight tells me I made a bad decision when I got a 20% discount on a display model utility trailer from a large "big box" hardware store here in the Seattle area. Many of the parts were assembled incorrectly, some of the hardware was missing, and they'd adjusted the wheel bearings too tightly which ended up frying one of them and the associated bearing races just during the trip home. The bearing races were integral with the hubs and weren't servicable, so the hub was ruined. And, unfortunately, I didn't end up using the trailer for quite a while and didn't notice all this until after well the warranty had expired.

The trailer was manufactured by a Canadian company and they claimed that, due to US regulatory restrictions, they were currently unable to ship bearings or hubs to the United States. So much for our friends to the north.

Fortunately, the trailer axle was American made, and etrailer.com was able to provide me with everything I needed to make the trailer roadworthy; with higher quality parts and at less cost. And the hubs had lugs, as opposed to the originals with just threaded holes; which makes installing the wheels much easier.

What can I say? I'm now a fan of etrailer.com.

by:

This product arrived quickly and fit well. It is of equivalent or better quality than the original hub and bearings on my Snowbear trailer, which had rusted rather badly. I like having studs and lug nuts instead of lug bolts. I also like having it ungreased so I can know what kind of grease I am putting in and not worry about compatibility (lithium vs. calcium, etc.). My only beef is that it should come with a new cotter pin and ideally, a new castle nut to truly be complete.

Thanks to etrailer for listing enough dimensions that I could pick out the correct hub, since the originals had no numbers on them.

by:

Good quality hub, good price, fast shipping. Came with lugs, all bearings, inner races installed, and a double lip marine type grease seal as well as a basic grease cap. The only thing I needed to provide was a cotter pin!

by:

First of all my Customer Rep Julie H, Was very helpful and gave accurate information. A real pleasure working with her. The Hub fit as design and came to me clean and ready to go. I used this hub to retro fit a older trailer, 1960 ish. The original wheels also housed the bearing.
I would recommend this change out
I also went from an 8' wheel to 12"

by:

Fast shipping everything listed and pictured is here and in good shape. I would have given 5 stars if the kit had come complete with a cotter pin. No fault of Etrailer as it was not in the parts list. I would just like to see a kit as a complete kit. Overall no complaints its a good deal and I hope to put many miles on it.

by:

You guys are the best! Excellent service and I couldn't be happier! Thank you!

by:

Installed on my 5x8 foot trailer ,it's been towed back and forth from PA. to WI. a few times had no trouble traveling 70 - 75 MPH. 1,200 miles one way

by:

Trailer hub came with everything needed ; dust cap did not work out - but, used old one !! Same GREAT service and material as always !! A +++

by:

nuts hards to spin on, black paint already peeling off.....F paint job, packaged very poorly, bolts taped to hub. so when i pulled off tape, off went paint. bearings are rel nice

by:

Great product. Perfect fit and has performed without issue all summer. These were for a boat trailer so I'm dipping them in the water constantly. They just keep asking for more.

Thanks guys. You're a life saver.

by:

Excellent quality hub that fits perfectly. The tutorials and videos on etrailer really assisted me in picking the correct parts for my older trailer.

Excellent communications and customer service from etrailer, too! Thank you!

by:

Switched from a 4 lug rim to a 5 lug so I could run a larger tire, already had the rims but needed to change hubs. These hubs worker perfectly, they are of good quality and are well worth the price which is very reasonable. Order processing and shipment was very fast. I have no complains at all. Any parts I need in the future will be purchased from etrailer.com. Can't beat the service or product price. I highly recommend this retailer for your needs.

by:

First of all, I cannot say enough good things about the people who work at etrailer. I spent at least 30 minutes on the phone with them making sure I ordered the correct hub. I recieved it 4 days after I ordered it and it fit perfectly I was able to get it installed in about 15 minutes. Thanks Etrailer!!!

by:

Very happy with everything except for that after wasting a lot of time trying to get the grease caps on and still cannot! No matter what I did would not work so they are now in the trash and I need to buy new ones. That is pretty ridiculous in my opinion. Other then that I’m very satisfied but giving this a 1 because buying the complete unit it should all assemble together without problems.

by:

I ordered a hub for my trailer along with another part. The 2nd part was on back order which would have delayed my order. I needed the hub for a trip. George and team were great in revising and expediting my order. Hub arrived on time, good condition, fit perfectly.

by:

Quick Delivery, went together good, except for the Dust Covers. Could not get either of those things on to save my life. Very Thin Gauge Tin. I had another Heavier Gauge set from other hubs, they went on with no problems.

by:

Great service and product, everything exactly as advertised. The hubs are going to go on a BBQ grill that we are changing the wheel size from 8" to 15". It is unusual to find a company that provides the service and product quality level this company does, what a pleasure dealing with them.--Thank-you.

by:

Parts arrived in 2 days & look good. All components are here, bearings, nuts cap etc. Everything looks 100% correct and will see about putting them on tomorrow. I am extremly satisfied with the on-line tech, delivery timing and cost. Thank you guys.
ps: (I put a "plug" in for you on my teardrop trailer sight.)

by:

etrailer.com did a great job, I emailed a few questions and they answered quickly. I ordered the hub over the weekend receiving an email that they received the order and it was in process, The hub shipped quickly with an email notification and arrived the next day with a second email that the package was waiting in my garage. Everything fit great and the trailer is rolling real nice now.

by:

Just what I needed. these will be used on a trailer that will be pulled by a Jeep Wrangler TJ Sahara.
THANKS GEORGE

by:

Excellent quality and service. Received the parts in 3 days. Really liked the helps explaining the differences in 1 inch axles. Now I know I have BT8 axles. Thanks

by:

Very nice hub kit and an excellent discription on the website. We upgraded from a 8” rim to 13” and this is the hub that’s recommended for 13”rim. Couldn’t be happier with the hubs or the filters on the website since they made it very easy to navigate and bring the options down to a select few.

  • Why Couldnt Hub Centric Wheel Fit in Place of Lug Centric Wheel on Trailer
It won't work because the problem typically is the bolt holes on the wheel. Lug centric wheels will have the cone shape to the bolt holes so that the matching lugs will center the wheel properly and then hub-centric won't have that same shape since the wheel is already centering on the pilot hole.

  • Hub Availability to Fit Spindle with 1 inch Diameter Where Bearings Ride
Can you verify the diameter of the spindle where the seals ride too? If that diameter is 1.24 inches combined with your bearings both having inner diameters of 1 inch we would have hubs that would fit. The part # 8-258BTUC1 would give you a 5 on 4-1/4 inch bolt pattern hub that fits.

  • Can 15 inch Wheels be Used with a 2,000-lb Trailer Axle
It doesn't necessarily have to do with the axle-to-wheel size as much as it does the hub-to-wheel size. Most, but not all, hubs rated for a 2,000-lb axle are compatible with smaller wheel and usually have an 8" - 12" wheel range. As you found, sometimes that is not always the case. The part # 8-258BTUC1 that you referenced is compatible with 13" - 15" wheels that have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. If this hub fits your axle and your wheel is compatible with it then you can definitely use...

I honestly can't tell you. It sounds like the manufacturer just put two separate parts together. It is not normal to find this on the same axle but if you have a tandem axle that is more common. If it is on the same axle, as long as it is functional with the same hubs, you will just need to get the correct bearings for each spindle to make things continue to function properly. The Dexter Hubs like # 8-258BTUC1 can have different bearings and races on the inside. With one straight spindle...

  • Changing Trailer from Hub-Centric Rims with Bolts to Lug-Centric Rims with Studs and Nuts
Your original rims are the hub-centric type, meaning that the pilot hole in the center of the rim provides the centering for the rim on the hub. In the lug-centric type that you are switching to the centering of the rim on the hub is provided by the alignment of the lugs. As long as your new rims have a pilot hole that is larger than the center of the hub (to fit over it) and your wheel studs line up and thread on properly then you are all set.

  • Will Having Larger Pilot Hole Diameters Matter on New Trailer Wheels
Having a larger pilot diameter (center hole) on a trailer wheel is only an issue if the wheels are centered onto the axle using the hub (a hub centric wheel). In this case you would need an exact fit. You know you have a hub centric wheel if your trailer uses wheel bolts to attach the wheel instead of lug nuts. If your trailer is lug centric meaning the wheel is centered on the axle using the lug nuts, then having a larger pilot hole on the wheel is not a problem.
