Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle in Trailer Axles

With Alex's assistance and knowledge of my trailer requirements, I installed two 3500 lb axles. These axles are superior to any others that I was shopping for, and with a combined GVW of 7,000 lbs my trailer is now suited for any medium sized load.

Axel took 2 1/2 weeks to receive. When I received it was damaged broken grease fitting missing lock for nut. Missing 1 of 2 axel mount. Great price on axel.

Comments
It is certainly disappointing to receive the axle damaged when you have been waiting to receive it. I will have our customer service team reach out to you so we can have this taken care of for you.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle in Trailer Axles

Adam was extremely helpful! After searching long and hard, the closest I could find was this axle of 80” spring centers. Mine were only 76” so Adam set me up with a pair of spring seats so I could carefully cut of the factory ones, grind smooth and weld the new seats at the 76” I needed to fit my trailer. After repainting, it looked like factory again. All others parts, brake assemblies, and drum/hub assemblies with bearings fit perfect!

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle in Trailer Axles

After a rust related axle failure, my equipment trailer was down. (If you roll in the rust belt, check your axles near where the brake wire goes through)
After checking my local source, I was told there was a long lead time for new axles due to the pandemic.
I was so happy to find etrailer. They had the exact axles I needed. After I pulled the axles I realized I also needed hardware and u-bolts.
Everything arrived ahead of schedule, allowing me to get back up and running quickly.
Thank you etrailer. You are a valuable resource.

etrailer had the best prices and excellent customer service, Thanks Ian! Shipping was fast and free to boot. I bent the front axle on my in-laws fifth wheel camper and this axle fit the bill. I had to order a set of spring seats and weld them to the opposite sides. The original seats were at 68.5 " centers and that configuration was unavailable anywhere.

Trying to update my trailers 5100 lb. Lippert axles with Dexter 6000 lb. axles. Dexter’s are very well made wished I didn’t have to send them back thus why the 4 stars. Dexters 74 inch center to center are not a direct replacement for Lippert. It’s very hard to get the hub face measurements by yourself so I assumed it would work unfortunately Lipperts are few inches wider. Customer service was great about letting me ship these items back. Great folks to deal with!

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle in Trailer Axles

It has been a year. The axle has preformed flawlessly. 5-star because it exactly matched the existing axle for bearing seal part and brake assembly which were moved from the existing lippert 5200# axle to this one. This 6000# axle provides a bit of margin for weight over the existing.

One word, FANTASTIC! The #5200lbs Dexter axle was a perfect fit period! The axle came with all factory stickers and serial numbers to further identify the correct part. Shipped in a good time given that the part wasn’t in stock but the wait was worth while.
The price and free shipping where the deciding, the perfect fit was very gratifying as well I highly recommend etrailer.com

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle in Trailer Axles

I inherited an aluminum trailer that ended up needing a complete overhaul and etrailer was the best resource I could have found. After researching extensively to find out what I needed and watching their videos on how to do it I ended up ordering an EZ-lube axle, galvanized hubs, springs and a hanger kit (in other words everything from the frame down).
Everything shipped quickly and arrived in great shape. All the parts worked perfectly and I couldn't be happier!

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle in Trailer Axles

Perfect fit, nice axle and fast delivery. I liked it so much I ordered another a day later to replace the front axle. My 30 yr old tandem trailer's axle broke at the wheel, so I went to a local store which doesn't stock them anymore. Could of ordered a so so axle for $94 + $28 shipping and wait 2 weeks but needed it fast. I went to a major trailer sales & service shop and told "maybe we could get one for $250" with no call back. I decided to check out etrailer and was surprised to see Dexter axles that fit my trailer for $140 with FREE shipping in 3-4 days! Ordered Sat. night, got it Wednesday afternoon, and installed it (with brakes) in an hour. Only problem I had was determining if spindles would fit my hubs. They stated "1/16th spindle" and must be industry talk but french to me. So I had to look up bearing #'s they listed to check bearing sizes to make sure they fit my hubs. A little more time but not a deal breaker. The best part was the huge difference in ride with just one new axle. Always had bouncing loaded or not, but now with just one axle the ride is smoother no load and with my 4000 lb tractor on it. Can't wait to get the 2nd axle on that arrived today. First two pics show the difference between the old straight axle and the new dexter axle. The third is a pic of my 2nd axle, oh well. Etrailer is my new go to place for trailer parts. I have 7 trailers.

  • What Type of Trailer Axle is a 8974 and How to Pick Out Replacement
The numbers you mentioned from your axle indicate it's an 89 inch long axle with 74 inches between springs seats measured on center. Luckily that's a very common size that we have options for. I attached a link to them on this page for you to check out. You'll want to know the capacity you need as well. For example, the part # 8327820 is a 5,200 straight axle with straight spindles.

  • How Can I Increase My Enclosed Trailer Maximum Payload Weight Capacity?
When it comes to an axle weight rating of 3,500 pounds, the gross weight of the vehicle cannot exceed that weight rating by any circumstances. The only way to increase the payload weight is by installing new axles. Although, you must also consider the weight capacity of the frame and floor construction when making this decision. For that reason, I strongly recommend reaching out to your trailer manufacturer to make that determination. If you can confirm that you can increase the axle...

This axle is 89 inches from hub face to hub face and also has 74 inches between the spring seat centers. • Availability of 5,200 lb Trailer Axle with 74 inches Between Spring Seats
To pick out replacement axles you need a few pieces of info. You need the capacity like you mentioned, you need the hub face to hub face dimension and you need the spring seat to spring seat dimension as well. With that info you can determine what you'd need. For example, if the 74 inch dimension you listed was from the spring seat to seat dimension and you needed 89 inches from hub face to hub face you'd want the # 8327820-EB which comes with hub/drums and brake assemblies.

  • Why Aren't Trailer Axles Made Totally Flat without a Bow in Them
They put a slight bow into trailer axles so that when they have weight on them the camber angle for the wheels/tires isn't bad. Basically the axle slightly flattens out with weight so that you get the correct camper angle. Your choice would be to order an axle in the over/under configuration you need or installing an over/under kit if needed.
