Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I replaced my RV's axles from 4400# to this product. I am very pleased with the product including the shipping and the installation.

by:

I had a bearing fail on my 2003 Holiday Rambler andit wiped the axel . Dexter told me a minimum time to make an new axel 6 weeks. I looked up the specs on the old axel and compared to units at etrailer finding a unit with overall length the same and greater load I was able to add new spring perches and replace the old axel in one day!

They work fine. No problems

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I bought two of these axles to replace 2 off brand ones that needed brakes, hubs and bearings. These were only slightly more expensive, and got me to a name brand. The kit came with actually extra axle nuts, and you have to assemble the brakes and hubs yourself, which was no problem. I had two slight issues. The first was that one of the brake wires that travels through the axle had a tiny bit of damage, exposing the actual copper wire itself, however there was plenty of wire left to fix this. But it would definitely be a failure down the road if I didn't see it when installing. The second problem I had was more of a shipping issue. They include a tube of grease in the box that has both hubs and breaks in it, the plastic cap of the grease tube opened up, and coated everything and damaged the box to the point that it literally opened up on the poor UPS carrier at my door, dumping the contents on the ground, however shipping issues aren't the main focus of the review, and it only happened to one, not the other axle's box. Thankfully, everything I ordered is tough enough that it was not bothered. Overall, this was an excellent solution to my problem, and I called to order this to double check what I read on the site, service was great, order processed quickly! I will come back for future needs!

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I purchased this to replace a bent idler axle on an older Pequea utility trailer. I figured it made sense to upgrade to an axle with brakes while I was at it - and I was rewiring the trailer anyway so adding brake wires was no big deal as part of that project.

Installation was simple. I was a little worried about assembling the brakes and bearings just because I hadn't done it before, but I watched some videos and it was very easy. I've put around 1000 miles on it in the year I've had it and it's held up great so far.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I ordered these August 1st and they just arrived 4 1/2 months later. I don't blame Etrailer for that. It's just the way things were with supply since then. Etrailer kept me updated as things changed. Since I live in Maine and will have to install them outside I won't be doing it until spring. I have checked everything over though and the quality looks excellent. I have never had any problem with anything from Etrailer. This package deal was at a great price and includes everything except the U bolt mounting kit which I bought separately.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

Installed a yr ago. Perfect product.
One
thing for me though....
I had to buy different fenders because I bought better tires and rims for this new axle which turned out to be slightly wider.
So the original fender would have cut into the tires.
I got everything from etrailer. Axle with brakes fully assembled, controller, fenders, wire harness, connections tires, time and more...and couldn't be happier with cust service, pricing and availability.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

Great high quality axles! I installed two of these on a boat trailer with one brake and one idler hub. It was a rebuild from single to dual axles. All the parts were well organized and packaged well and free shipping- thanks etrailer! Good service and value all around. I hauled the boat about 100 miles today and it all works perfectly. A vast improvement in performance.

Axle seem good. The directions for assembly are apparently a copy of a copy of a copy..... ect, making them pretty difficult to read. Difficult enough that I missed the part about how deep to tap in your inside seal. Now we get to do it again.

So far so good! Axle was not a direct fit even though it was supposed to be. We had to relocate a couple of the mounts for suspension. Other than the trailer rides great, better than ever.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I purchased these axles and brakes to replace the old axles on my car hauler. Everything went smoothly with this order. I received my axle and hubs much faster than I anticipated. The parts were well packaged and everything is exactly as I ordered it. I had never installed hubs on trailer axles but after watching one of etrailer's instructional videos I had both sides of the idler axle done in less than 30 minutes. I had similar results on the axle that I put electric brakes on as well. Dexter axles with the EZ-Lube spindles are well worth the money. Bottom line I couldn't be happier with the products and service.

  • Troubleshooting Weak Brakes on Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes
To be honest the brakes that were on your Lippert 5.2K axles were probably from Dexter Axle as they are the most common brakes on any trailer. Since your OEM brake controller on your Ram pickup worked with the old brakes it isn't likely that all of the sudden it wasn't compatible, especially since the brakes on the Dexter Axle # 8327830-EB are just standard eletric brakes and it isn't an electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) system. You said that you checked the brake adjustments, but I really...

  • Which Axle to Add to a Trailer with Two Axles and Dexter 8-201-9 Hubs
It looks like the numbers you gave me are for a Dexter 6K axle. If you want to add another axle, then we have three options depending on the length of your current axles. If your axles measure 86-1/2" from hub face to hub face, then part # 8327826-EB is the new axle for you. If they measure 89", then use part # 8327830-EB. If they measure 95", then use part # 7461121-EB. Each of these axles are 6K Dexter EZ-Lube axles with 6 on 5-1/2" bolt patterns. The only difference is the length....

  • Does Dexter Trailer Axle W/ Electric Brakes # 8327830-EB Come W/ Bearings Pre-Greased?
The Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - E-Z Lube - 6 on 5-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 89" - 6,000 lbs # 8327830-EB you were looking at does not come pre-greased so you will need to pack the bearings with the included marine grade grease. That is pretty easy on this axle as it has the E-Z Lube spindle with a zerk fitting so you can add grease without having to take the spindle apart. I do still recommend adding some grease to the spindle and bearings before installing, then topping it off through...

Since mobile home axles are just meant to be used once we want to focus on weight capacity and fit with your trailer frame to make sure we get something that is a good replacement.
