V-19 Certified for safety and featuring exceptional strength and versatility, this universal adapter converts a fifth-wheel king pin to a gooseneck coupler. This allows you to tow your fifth-wheel trailer without a bulky fifth-wheel hitch. The Ranch Hitch from Andersen Manufacturing is easy to install, even for the inexperienced do-it-yourselfer.

Measuring Your Truck and Trailer for the Ranch Hitch Coupler Adapter

You can perform these steps to determine if the adapter will work for your fifth-wheel trailer.

  1. Back your truck into position as if you were hooking up your fifth-wheel trailer, making sure that the truck and trailer are level.
  2. Measure from the pin plate (the bottom of the pin box) down to the top of the ball in the bed of your truck.
  3. The measurement should fall between 11-3/4" and 14-3/4". (The adapter is 11-3/4" tall when fully compressed and 14-3/4" tall when fully extended.)

Additional Measurements

Five or six inches of clearance between the overhang of the trailer and siderails of your truck is necessary for safe operation.

Diagram of pin box showing where to measure length

Measuring for Pin Box Length

The Ranch Hitch adapter is designed for trailers with a standard or extended pin box up to 24" long (measured diagonally). To find this dimension, you should measure from the centerline of the bottom of the king pin into the back of the pin box as far as you can reach. You may not be able to reach the very back of the pin box itself because the top of it may extend into the trailer. In this case measure to where the pin box disappears into the trailer.

I have a 2019 f250 with the 6.5' bed and didn't want a heavy, bulky fifth wheel hitch taking all the bed space up. I had the fifth wheel package already installed as well, so it didn't make sense to not use that.

I about went with the ultimate hitch that Anderson offers but decided against that as I have seen many reviews where the hitch failed.

I saved a bunch of cash going with this product and it is awesome. I installed it by myself in my drive way in about 2 hours start to finish. I have zero issues turning so close to a 90*. I have a headache rack on my truck and it gets within an inch or two of hitting that but not my truck. I don't have any issues with the king box hitting the bed either like some people stated.

The test ride today went very well. It rode very smooth and I have plenty of bed space for my dogs and gear. I would highly suggest this product if you are on the fence like I was. I will see how this will hold up over the years but I doubt I will have any issues.

The shipping effected the sheath covering over the cable, I contacted the company, sent some pictures and they will be sending me a brand new part. I love this company and the products they stand behind!!!

I had to spray some WD-40 inside the coupler as it was slightly binding up, after that, it operated buttery smooth once again. This has worked out very well with our 30 fifth wheel trailer. I have pulled doubles as well many times this year out camping and no issues. I like this setup more than a traditional bulky hitch system in the bed of the truck!

@Jordon We're glad that the # AM3139 Ranch Hitch is working well for you!

I have been using the Ranch Hitch #3100 Straight Adapter for 3 years. Converting the 5th wheel to goose neck was awesome. Much easier to hook up and a smoother, quieter pull. After purchasing a new trailer I noticed that the trailer was too close to the cab of my short bed truck. I found the Ranch Hitch #3139 with 8" offset adapter. It installs easy and gives me 8 more inches away from my truck cab. Excellent! Turning corners is much more comfortable!

How do I install this? Do I have to drill holes? How long does it take?

Patrick B.

6/4/2014

There is a threaded collar that goes around the king-pin. The Ranch hitch is threaded on to the collar and tightened to 400 ft. lbs. Then you will either drill 4 holes into the pin box and install bolts, or use four 1-inch tack welds to weld the Ranch Hitch to the the pin box. This is a relatively permanent install.

After having this on my (small) 5th wheel travel trailer for more than 2 years, I have discovered the major problem with it...
Because the hitch point is so much lower, it has created unusual leverage over the kingpin box and now my trailer frame is cracking :(
Your trailer must be VERY shored up around the kingpin box to resist the extension of torque by essentially making your kingpin box much longer.
I loved the idea of not having a 5th hitch in the box of my truck and the removable gooseneck ball instead, but I now know that a complete change-out of the kingpin box to a gooseneck hitch would have been more reliable.
I am now in Mexico with a cracked trailer frame due to this :(

by:

Installed this hitch adapter on a small-ish fifth wheel trailer (2007 arctic fox 21-5R). I've waited to review now that I've finished pulling the trailer through the Canadian Rocky mountains to Vancouver island and back ~4000km or 2500 Miles.
The hitch installed fairly easily in about 2 hours, with careful attention to centering and torque specifications.
The hitch performed as it should throughout my recent trip, no problems with function whatsoever.
The only downside I see with this hitch adapter is the need to raise the trailer a few inches higher each time you hitch/unhitch, in order to clear the gooseneck ball. Also, when nearing a full 90 degree angle between truck & trailer, the pin box may rub against the bed rails. This is partly due to the ride height of my truck. Otherwise, excellent solution for avoiding the Fifth wheel hitch in your truck box!
Picture attached, dodge 3500 regular 6 foot box (levelling kit, 35" wheels) with arctic fox fifth wheel trailer. No modifications to trailer other than the ranch hitch adapter with offset for short box truck.

I should have taken 5th whedel of trailer for easier installation but didn't have anyone to help remove it weighs quite a bit after installing gooseneck.. Still have it and no problems.

by:

I put on camper and drove 20 miles and removed and went back to a fithwheel. My gooseneck ball wasn't made like a new drop in bed type. I still have hitch incase of emergency.

by:

Received my order quick and was quick and easy to install. Great quality

by:

Instructions are clear and complete, easy installation, and it opened up my bed for camping items. I strongly recommend this hitch who like to have a clean bed when disconnected from the trailer.

by:

The folks at etrailer arranged faster shipping that advertised at no charge and the adapter arrived lots quicker than expected. The product is obviously better than the former adapter. Lots heaver and the ball receiver is easier to center above the ball.

Two EXCELLENT pieces of advice were included in the instructions. One was about bracing the hitch to prevent damage or coming loose from the trailer. The best advice regarded surging, or chucking. My previous adapter did both and neither a trailer manufacturer nor the RV people who sold and installed it could diagnose or fix the problem. This issue for me is important in that I have 3 fused vertebrae and stenosis.

As usual, RanchHand is leading the pack! I have a RanchHand "cowcatcher" bumper and it has done the job really well also.

Excellent product, Superb Advice!

Many Thanks!

I am sorry your product arrived scratched, Blake! The manufacturer says the powder coat is the toughest paint that is cost effective and should withstand a situation like the edge of a nickel scratching it. An impact will ding the paint and this cannot be avoided. The manufacturer recommends using Krylon Gloss Rough Tuff Enamel Spray paint to touch up any defects.

This product is great and just what I was looking for at the time. It was fairly easy to attach to the king pin to convert it to a goose neck ball which is what I already had in my truck bed. It attaches rely solid and can easily meet the 24000 lb rating I am sure. Being a short bed truck this hitch had the 8" offset which has the same effect as a 5th wheel slider hitch. The only problem with the offset is it puts the angular body of the trailer hitch closer to the side walls of the bed. Also when I remove the offset portion it also helps deter theft as there is nothing to hitch to! I have since bought a long bed diesel truck so I will be buying the straight adapter soon.

by:

The people at etrailer are very helpful. She put my order in as I was on the phone with her and she sent me an email about 1 hour after that letting me know it had shipped. The product came in about 4 days with there free shipping. The item was just as I expected. I would buy from them again. I am very happy with the service, shipping and value of the product. Thank you so much etrailer.com

by:

Purchased this gooseneck hitch to convert my fifth wheel travel trailer to a gooseneck. This product is easily attached to the fifth wheel king pin and attaches very solid. The hitch release cable makes it simple to secure and release from your ball. I am very satisfied with my choice in purchasing this product and would highly recommend it. I have purchased this and other products from etrailer and have always received the best service.

by:

The hitch was very easy to install. When we received it the release cable was damaged. I sent an email with pictures, in less than a week they sent a new one. Excellent customer service in my opinion!

by:

I still have to drill four holes and I had to rent a puller for $6.00 but so far I am impressed with how easy the installation was, but ask me again in two weeks when I have to move my fifth wheel, But for the price, and design compared to other adaptors, I have no complaints. Just not sure how well it will work with the offset.

Works great, for what I need. I do prefer the fifth wheel hitch, but did not want to put the rails in my truck for that hitch. I do have to use the backup balls and my camera for the goose neck hitch but its not too bad.

by:

Very heavy and solid. Quick install time. No disappointments, even shipped quick. Trailer pulled nice as well. Would recommend to anyone. I bought this because my Mega cab already had a gooseneck ball in the bed and I found a fifth wheel camper at a steal of a price. Adapter was extremely cheap in price but still a sturdy quality product. Converted the camper to gooseneck, and can still convert back if needed. Scott from PA.

by:

Hello, well I only used this setup for a couple of trips, I replaced it with Andersons ultimate 5th wheel connection. The 5th wheel box on my RV is extra long and was concerned of metal fatigue and cracking as was noted in some reviews. That was talked about in the instruction sheet. The product is solid ,would like to find someone that doesn't have a long box that could us it.

Hitch is great and a breeze to install. I cant say enough about the service I received from etrailer. I ordered the wrong hitch (my fault) so I called etrailer they immediately sent me a return authorization and shipped me the correct hitch. They shipped the replacement hitch on Thursday morning I received it Friday. Thats awesome. Thanks etrailer.

  • How Many Bolts are Used to Attach the Andersen Ranch Hitch to a 5th Wheel Trailer
You will use 4 grade 8 bolts (included) to attach the Ranch Hitch # AM3139 to the trailer pin box. There are 8 holes in the base of the Ranch Hitch but you will only use the 4 best located holes for your trailer. The adapter is also threaded onto a special piece that fits around the trailer king pin so it is held on to the trailer in more than 1 way for additional security.

When you say hitting the sidewalls of your truck are you referring to the bed rails or the cab of the truck? That would give more clearance from the bottom of the pin box to the bed rails.
