Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Absolutely perfect...dependable and have several hundred miles on them now ...and still look new

Great products and very good prices on quality tire. Quick shipment and boxed very nicely. Fit on trailer hub perfectly. Videos really helped me measure hub lugs and explain ply difference and load range differences. I have a better product which will haul more.
I will be buying a hitch and wiring for another car and the videos show me how easy it is to install. Companies around here want up to $400.00 to install. Thanks for the service will be back

The tires are perfect on my trailer. Hardly ever lose air and so trilled to have good rubber when I go across town. Really easy process on buying tires with a rim. No waiting at store installer and helped me learn to change my own tire. I tell people even lately about this business and how wonderful the experience has been. I used to have a raggedy $150.00 yard trailer someone built and neighbors would borrow until last neighbor called and told me he arrived with only the hitch clasp. Bought me a good trailer later and updated the wheels and tires and don’t worry about accidents so much when pulling a load. Thanks for helping me improve my responsibilities towards others on the road

by:

I bought these for my 2001 Starcraft pop up, that fully loaded was pushing the max load limit of the load range C tires, and I didn't have clearance for larger wheels and tires. These load range D tires are just what I needed since they have a 250 lb higher limit on each tire. I ordered these on a Saturday afternoon and they were delivered three days later.

They are typically either manufactured in China or Taiwan.

I ordered these tires for my boat trailer. Have not been anywhere yet but I do a lot of fishing all over Tx.I have had several flats and I believe these tires will elimiinate some. Better load range

no flats or low tires. so far so good

My order for new tires and rims and other accessories came days earlier than it was supposed to, which made me happy. I did find a damaged item,I contacted them and they were getting a replacement in the mail ASAP. I think their customer service is tops.

by:

Several hundred miles after one year and the tires and rims are holding up great on rough roads and loading just below the maximum weight rating.

Another year and two cross-country trips later, tires and rims are still doing great. I keep the trailer loaded near maximum allowable weight.

by:

These arrived quickly and look good. I ordered them mid August, 2022, and the date codes on the tires were 1422, and 3621. So one was about a year out from the manufacture date while the other was quite new.

by:

Tires look great. Nice to see the rims were made in the USA. Will be making our first trip with the new tires soon

by:

Wonderful customer service! Tires arrived right on time and were exactly what I needed for my trailer!

by:

Put the tires/wheels on pop up camper. About 1000 miles so far, no issues, still looks good and rides smoothly. Good tires.

by:

I purchased this tire/wheel combo to replace my older bias-ply tires and wheels on my camper. I upgraded to these radials because I do tow my camper on the highway. So far, so good. I’ve only taken these tires out camping a few times - but the trailer is pulling great and the tires seem to be wearing fine. I’d also like to note, that I asked multiple questions to the etrailer folks before buying these. As always, etrailer responded quickly and were very helpful in my decision making. This wheel/tire combo was fairly priced, and I got them within a few days of ordering them.

by:

Tires were perfect for the trailer, replaced boths sides and now the trailer rolls so smooth along the drive that I hardly think I am towing a boat behind me. Gave me an extra spare tire as well.

Product works as promised. Still rolling after a year with no hiccups.probably can get through two more seasons without changing the tires.

I purchased Loadstar 5.30 12 Bias Trailer Tire 5 on 4 1/2 Load Range C . I failed to notice that it was a Bias Ply which only has a Load Range C at 65 mph. I got back with etrailer for a refund and replace them with a 175 13 Radial that has a Load Range D at 81 mph . It was a hassle free Exchange. Of course they deducted shipping on my refund. Make sure that's the item you want it will save you on shipping cost on your return. Overall I'm very happy with the Tires and rims and they fit perfectly. Very good customer service. I received them in three days. I would recommend this company. 5

by:

Very nice tire and wheel. Was east transaction. Sipped fast. Exactly what I needed.

by:

5500 miles on an extended camping trip through 7 national parks and three monuments from Missouri to California. Put a new set (4) of Kenda tires and wheels on my restored 1991 Sunlight trailer and had no problems whatsoever. Would not hesitate to recommend.

by:

The tires and rims package we selected,Karrier ST175/80R 13 radial tire with White spoke wheels, came in three days among other holiday gifts thanks for the prompt shipping. We found the quality amazing for the price .These rims and tires are replacing six year old rusted out and dry rotted ones.Perfect fit on our snowmobile trailer. Thanks again.

by:

The tires went right on without any problem, the taillights are from etrailer also.
One of the taillights was broken during shipping and they sent another one right away at no additional charge.
I will be purchasing more from them as i keep this oldie rolling.

  • Can Larger Wheels And Tires Be Put On 2005 Fleetwood Popup With 12 Inch Tires
You can move to 14 inch wheels and tires but there are a couple of things you need to be cautious of. One is the clearance you have by installing bigger wheels. You will want to make sure you have at least 3 inches of clearance above the tire tread when under a full load (or at max deflection of the spring - max deflection is usually 1.5 - 2 inches for leaf springs) and a couple inches between the inside wall of the tire and the closest part of the trailer. • Age of Kenda 175/80R13 LRD Tires
We sell quite a few trailer tires, so for the most part, they don't hang around here for long. Most of the tires we have in stock in the more popular sizes will have DOT date stamps within the previous calendar year. Slower movers might go back a bit further. Since the 175/80R-13 is a very popular size, we sell through our shipments quickly. Keep in mind that a tire on a warehouse shelf isn't exposed to the weather or UV radiation which can break down tires over time.

  • Does Karrier ST175/80R13 Trailer Wheel and Tire AM31985 Need to be Balanced
The tire and wheel combos we carry like the part # AM31985 are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What some manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

  • What Does Date Code on Trailer Tire Look Like
That doesn't sound like a standard date code. The code should be a 4 digit number. The first 2 are the week and the last 2 are the year. So for example if it was 2314 that means that tire was made in the 23rd week of 2014. I attached a picture that shows what the date code of a tire looks like.

  • Replacing Tires and Wheels on a Texture Spray Rig to Reduce Bounce When Towing
I am certain that the tires currently on your trailer are causing your problems. Those tires have two different widths and diameters and should not be used together. I would recommend replacing both tires with two of the same tires because both of your current tires will have uneven wear. There are a few things to look at before choosing the correct tire and wheel combination for your trailer. The main factors to consider is the axle weight capacity and the bolt hole pattern of your current...

The main factors that you will want to take into consideration when moving from a st205/75d15 tire and wheel to a st205/75d14 tire and wheel is the weight capacity of the smaller tire and wheel and the bolt pattern. The weight capacity of a trailer tire is divided into load ranges, B, C, D, E, or F, however, tires with the same load range will have different weight capacities for different size wheels. The easiest way to make sure the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13 inch White Wheel, part # AM31985 will work with your trailer is to take a quick measurement. The # AM31985 measures 24.1 inches when inflated. Just use a yardstick or a tape measure and measure the height of the tires you currently have on the trailer. If they measure 24.1 inches or more then the AM31985 would be a great replacement for you. The wheels with this combo have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and has...

  • Are Radial or Bias Ply Tires Better on Boat Trailer With 2 Axles
Given the choice I would recommend a radial tire over the bias tire because the radial tire will provide better stability and more ground contact resulting in a more comfortable ride. A radial tire is also going to have better tread wear over the bias ply tire. The radial tires will also run cooler and give you better traction. A cause for many tire problems is heat build up, especially when under a load, and the radial tires will dissipate that heat better than a bias tire. Bias tires...
