Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Very happy with my purchase here. There was a delay do to shipping from the manufacturer, but I was promptly kept up to date every step of the way. It's refreshing to do business with a company that was willing to engage me personally with regards to my order. As far as my trailer, well the before and after photos of replacing 10 year old tires and wheels should show the rest. I don't need trailer tires often, but when I do I will come here again.

Great wheels and tires. Much nicer looking than the standard steel wheels, and with aluminum you don't have to worry about rust. The tires did very well at highway speeds. I would definitely recommend these to anyone considering them.

I had an excellent buying experience with and will be buying from them again.

Here is a picture of my trailer, it is a work in progress but the wheels/tires look great.

These wheels and tires are great, very good quality and awesome looking. I have since ordered a 3rd one to mount on my trailer as a spare.

Good from the very start. Easy to find the correct size, shipped fast, received exactly as pictured and fit perfectly. Tires and wheel performs excellent.

Delivery was fast. Wheels and tires look amazing. Really added to the look of the trailer.

Very nice upgrade to our recently paint 30 year old trailer.
Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. ..
That ought a age me...
Thanks etrailer, I will buy again!

Beautiful wheels, nice tires, and showed up in 4 days with free shipping.

These wheels look great on my camping trailer! Highly recommend these!

Tires arrived in great condition and look great on my trailer. Very happy with purchase.

These look beautiful and were a great bargain. I can't wait to see how they update the look of my travel trailer. No more white, steel wheels!

A year later and a fair number of miles on them they still ride great. Can sit for a month and all 4 tires will be within a couple pounds of full pressure. Im still pleased
Rodger S - 08/05/2021

The 3 trailer tires I received appear to be in good shape, however, no where on the website did it state that I would be purchasing tires that were manufactured between 2 and 3 years ago. I just assumed the tires would be at least within 1 year of the manufacture date. When I spoke with a Customer Service rep about this issue she said I could return the tires, but the shipping would be at MY cost. With all of the other on-line trailer stores available on the web, I don't think I'll be purchasing anything else from

Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or even more before we received them. With the exception of the Goodyear Endurance, these tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they can sit in a warehouse for months until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can easily take months. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years from the date of purchase, assuming theyre not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The product warranty begins at the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture.

Excellent product and excellent communi cation

This is an outstanding wheel and tire, really an excellent value. I already have 2 of the same, and I bought this one to mount on my trailer as a spare. If anyone is considering buying this, I would say you should not hesitate. Great customer service and communication, also. When I need trailer stuff, I don't even look anywhere else.

Big improvement over stock, came quickly once we figured out separating the backordered part.

Order shipped quickly. Arrived in good shape. Need to use several times for honest review.

Haven’t installed them yet, but they are going to look awesome on my Fleetwood Mesa popup. They will match my Jeep wheels. I’ll take pics when they are on the trailer

Trailer is still under construction but so far I am very happy with them

Bought this for my boat trailer. Great wheel and tire for the money.

These tire were my first choice and the super nice wheels are a bonus. Finish and quality seem first rate.

cant say enough about looks and price. get the longer chrome lug nuts these wheels have lug holes recessed besides you don't want old lugs on this wheel the pictures don't do it justice.

Wheel and tire came fast and were exactly as ordered and as expected. Great company. Will use them again if I have the need

totally satisfied- all I can say

I am very pleased with the wheels. The delivery of the wheels exceeded my expectations.

Greg J - 05/11/2018

Tires with rims came quickly and in perfect shape, fit
as advertised.

Appears to be nice quality and fast shipping, thanks!

Great pricing and super fast delivery. The new wheels and tires fix great and look great on my trailer.

  • Is Kenda Loadstar Trailer Wheel/Tire # AM3S339 Balanced
The combination trailer tires/wheels that we offer, including the Kenda Loadstar Trailer Wheel/Tire # AM3S339 that you referenced, are not shipped in a fully dynamically-balanced state. They are, however, mounted with the tire's low spot matched to the wheel's high spot, which provides a degree of balance that is generally fine for applications on a trailer. Automobile tires/wheels, on the other hand, are dynamically balanced when they are mounted together. This process requires the specialized...

  • Offset of Wheel Used on Kenda Wheel/Tire Combo # AM3S339
The wheels we offer from Americana (like the wheel used on the # AM3S339 you mentioned) and HWT all have a zero offset, unless stated otherwise in the product description. A zero offset wheel would have the wheel mounting pad centered on the width of the rim. A positive offset moves the tire closer to the trailer, a negative offset moves the tire away from the trailer. I have linked you to a help article that has more information about trailer tires.

  • Can a Load Range D Trailer Tire be Used in Place of a Load Range C
The difference between load ranges is the plies, ply rating, and capacity. Going to a higher capacity or load range is fine so you can replace a load range C with a Load range D. Like you said, we have # AM3S339 which is a 185/80-13 on an aluminum wheel. If your existing wheels have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern then this tire and wheel combo will fit. I have linked a video review of the tire, a help article on determining bolt pattern, and a link to our help article on trailer tires in general.

As far as size is concerned the part number # AM3S339 that you referenced has a tire that is the same size as what you have. The difference is the D in the size instead of the R that is in your tire size. The D stands for bias-ply tire, whereas R stands for radial. The tire and wheel combos we carry like # AM3S339 are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

Pre-mounted trailer wheel and tire items like Loadstar ST185/80R13 Bias Tire Combo # AM3S339 do come ready to install on your trailer but do not get a full dynamic machine balancing process like a passenger vehicle tire does since trailer tires really don't need this.
