Video Transcript for Bulldog High-Profile Latch Repair Kit Installation
Today we'll be having a look at the Bulldog high-profile latch repair kit for heavy duty cowl lock couplers, part number BD054200. This kit also features a replacement cap spring, that if you only need that, it can be purchased separately as part number BD500354. This kit works on couplers such as part number BD028386, which used a 2" ball. We have our new latch here, a new clip, a new keeper clip, a new bushing, with 2 keeper washers, and our new spring. The reason we want this replacement latch kit is in case if it ever becomes damaged, we can easily replace it without having to weld on a whole new coupler to our trailer. We have a couple tools here today. A pair of channel lock pliers, and a flat-head screw driver.
This should be all you need to perform this repair. You may notice we have a coupler off to the side here, not actually attached to the trailer, just so it's easier for us to work with and show you how to replace these parts. First step, we'll pull our pin out, like so. Set it aside. Pull our latch back here, pop out this clip with a screw driver. We'll work the latch or the clop on out.
Now you have a couple options when you're replacing this. You can either cut it off and remove it multiple pieces, or you can slowly work it on out like this. We'll set it aside. Now we need to remove our handle. To do that we'll pop off these clip washers, once you have it off, set it aside.
There's a second one of those clip washers underneath. You can get that one off as well. With that off, set it aside. Push your pin off, remove our handle. We can flip it over and remove our spring. Use the screwdriver.
I'll take our spring on out. There's a pocket on both sides of it that it sits in, one there, one right there. We'll push the spring in place, one pocket, and push it down in the other one. Just like that. How we'll flip it over. This is the main reason while you're replacing this here, is in case our handle was to get damaged for some reason and our coupler operation didn't work properly. We'll put our handle in position, put the new pin in, flip it back over. We'll install our two clip washers. Push down on them and they'll clip into place. We have one started. Get it the rest of the way, we'll squeeze this together a little bit so our pin comes our more. We have one started, all the way on. We'll start the other one. With those both fully on now, we can get our new clip in here. Start one side, work it on up. Now when we pull back on it, we can push in our lock there, slide it back in place and our coupler is now secure over our hitch ball. We'll take our clip, push it in. Now our handle's locked position and our couple cannot come undone from our hitch ball.

I’m extremely pleased with Collar-Loc repair kit I purchased. My livestock trailer (1985 Hale) I recently purchased has a Bull Dog coupler with collar but had no latch mechanism or mount for one. After watching your installation video I fabricated a mounting piece, drilled two 1/4” holes using the latch as a pattern then tack welded the mounting piece on the trailer tongue. The latch repair kit assembly fit onto the mounting piece but I needed to move and reweld the fabricated mount back about 3/16” in order for the latch kit to pull the Bull Dog collar back enough to allow the hitch to open. Now the trailer hitch opens and closes perfectly.

Lost the strong wire connector between the operating lever and collar on my Bulldog hitch. Spent many years pulling the collar back by hand. Through Bulldog, found E-trailer. Their folks helped me find the exact 'hi-profile' part that I needed even though the trailer just celebrated its 40th birthday. Ordered the item and it was shipped within a few hours. Then USPS had it for just short of a week getting it from Missouri to Austin. Will have the new item installed today and back to being a happy trailer tower. Thanks etrailer. Have had the trailer with a 2 5/16 ball bulldog hitch for 40 years. The unit that locks the collar into place became a bit bent and the wire piece distorted making an unsafe condition, which I found out when my hitch did not lock properly. The trailer came off the ball and the yelling and screaming began. Etrailer had the parts for this old hitch which they still make today. Bulldog, a great choice and etrailer a great spot to buy from. Great buying experience.

This was a hard to find repair kit that I needed to repair my trailer hitch. With out this kit I would have had to weld on a new hitch. I would recommend this kit to everyone.

- Where Is Model Number Located On TrailerMost trailers should have a sticker or a plate with model number and other information affixed to the frame near the front of the trailer, possibly on the underside.
