How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

This electric jack offers 22" of total travel and features an LED courtesy light for simple nighttime operation. Crank included for manual override in case of power failure. Extends 6" in 28.1 seconds with 1,000 lbs of tongue weight.

I just installed this unit. It was so simple and easy to install. It took about 30 min ( minus the 2 hr it took to grind out 20 year old bolts from the manual jack). I love the sleek look of the unit. Gave it a test run and it's so quiet. I have a bumper pull horse trailer with a small living quarters and it lifted and retracted with no issues. Very happy with this product.

I received my new Bulldog jack fast after placing my order. It took me about 20 minutes to remove my old one and install the new one. This Bulldog jack is quieter than the previous one and moved up and down real well.
I needed to hook up in the evening before I left for my camping trip and will say the nice led light this jack comes with gives a very nice lighting to be able to see everything needed to hook up my trailer to my truck. I hope this one lasts much longer than my previous one. Time will tell but so far I really like the way this Bulldog jack operates

This economical electric trailer jack provides plenty of weight capacity, a drop leg to provide extend total lift length when needed, and a handy LED light to aid with servicing safety chains at night. The compact motor head stays out of the way when vertically swinging open or closing the tow vehicle's (SUV) rear door. The price is right and can be installed in about an hour, including simple wiring to the battery. This is a nice DIY upgrade to trailers that come equipped with a standard hand crank tongue jack.

Excellent Jack. Slow moving but that is due to high torque. Well made, attractive design. Highly recommended!
Solved the problem of busting my knuckles on the propane tanks while cranking the old jack.

Comments problems.
Jimmy j - 07/18/2020

The jack has worked well on my 24' enclosed car trailer.
It's a little slow going up which is to be expected with the weight of the car and trailer.

Shipping was fast and amazing as always. This jack bolted right on to my 2019 175LHS Hideout with the supplied hardware. Wired right up. I am excited about the drop leg. Will be nice to not have to run the jack all day. So far grat stuff. Would highly recommend.

Timothy G - 12/26/2021

Fair price. Quick shipping. Arrived as promised.Installation video was very helpful, as were the instructions. Add the drop leg BEFORE bolting the unit in place. Otherwise, you need to raise the tongue to get the leg underneath. Simple install.

.Light did not work out of the box. Jack worked well the two times I used it not much time to rate it but you were all in a hurry

What a dream come true! This electric jack replaced my old hand crank unit on my 24 foot travel trailer.

Installation was very simple with the one wire hook up. What I like most about this jack is the drop leg. This jack extends so far that now I won't need to bring all my boards (for lifting height) with me just to get the trailer off of the hitch.

Not included was a ring terminal for attaching the wire to the battery, but thats okay because I had one laying around. Another thing that I did, was that I found some flat washers to use between the head of the mounting bolt and the jack. The provided lock washers looked like they'd pull through the mounting plate.

Just be aware that the motor unit on the jack protrudes to the back and front of the center line of the jack tube. I'll have to deal with some clearance issues between the jack motor and my propane tanks. This isn't a flaw with the jack, just a quirk with my particular trailer setup.

Its a very nicely built jack, feels solid and heavy in your hand. Its powerful too. It had no problem picking up the trailer and my 2007 F-150 in order to install my weight distributing bars.

If you need a ring terminal to wire this jack part # BD500187 I recommend part # DW05705-1
Ring Terminal - 12-10 Gauge Wire - 3/8" Ring ID
for a 3/8 stud size, part 44-5310A for a 3/16 stud size or part 44-5356A for a 5/16 stud size. All of these ring terminals will work with 12-10 Gauge Wire. Deka 10 gauge wire part # 10-1-1
10 Gauge Primary Wire - Blue - per Foot
will work well if you need extra wire.

Jack still working great after one year. Hooking up the trailer is so easy. I don’t Miss that old hand crank at all.
Bryan - 06/10/2019

Very happy with the performance of our Bulldog. The name fits. What a difference as compared to a manual jack. Well worth the modest expense, and installation was hardly rocket science. The built in light is a great feature for evening set ups. A minor tip - cover the motor during outside storage to limit the risk of water seepage into the unit. Our experience with etrailer was also very positive.

Our Bulldog performs like it just came ouu u t of the box. The Full Monty!
Rod i - 05/10/2020

Followed this instructions that came with the jack. Installation went smoothly.

Shipping was great.

My customer loves it. Just what he needed for his equipment trailer.

Great product and easy install! Customer service great with placing order and follow up!

etrailer is always a 5 star in my book, I always get knowledgeable customer service and your price match policy has helped me more than a few times

ordering and free delivery was nice, arrived in good condition, easy to install, justed installed and works well, beats raising and lowering trailer by hand, 26 ft enclosed trailer

Quick and easy to install. Has worked flawlessly over the course of the first year of use while remaining outside in the elements.

Quality product fit my needs easy ordering decent shipping time

The Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 14" Lift - 3,500 lbs - Black was very quick and easy to install. Seems to work great. This is on a small 3700 lb travel trailer and lifts with ease. Need to determine how far to ext and retract as not to blow fuses but it works great so far. Can't wait to take it out and see how it performs camping.

Working great with no problems for a year
Bill P - 03/16/2018

It's been a year now, and my jack is working just like it did a year ago when I installed it on my 32ft wildwood camper. Still smooth motion up and down. I really enjoy having it. Makes camping so much easier. One of the best purchase decisions I have made! I do have a cover I put on it when I bought it new, so it has never been wet, or exposed to sunlight. I can work the buttons on the jack through the cover, so I never take it off. I do love the jack. Thank you guys so much for good quality at a great great price!

Its been a year and still woring as good as day one. Love it!
Roger M - 05/06/2020

look and feel heavy duty, very easy to install

Jack arrived in 2 days. Fits great and easy to install. Jack head only sticks out 3 inches from front of tube, closer then most. This allows me to open tailgate without hitting jack. I use an extended reciever for more clearance. Light on jack also shines in the bed of truck.

Works great. No problems. Very nice jack.
Dave S - 10/09/2018

Great jack. I quickly found out that this jack also blows fuses if retracted completely, which is apparently common. It is a little slower than the Super Jack it replaced, but I like the added features such as: multiple mounting holes for mounting in different positions, LED lights, the switch is labeled up and down (my old jack wasn't, so if you were near the top and hit the switch the wrong way, you were replacing 20A fuses), and the adjustable drop leg. I am not crazy about the gold/bronze drop leg, but nothing a can of paint cant fix.

I installed it in just a few minutes as it is simply three bolts and one electrical connection. I ordered the jack on Saturday and it was at my house on Tuesday with regular ground shipping. Further, I received constant email updates on where the shipping process was. Great service again from etrailer.

The blown fuses can happen when the motor is over-loaded either by over-extending or over-retracting the jacks. A helpful trick is to mark the leg at stop points with a paint pen or scratch tool. That way you know when the jack is all the way up or down and you do not go too far and blow the fuse.
-- Etrailer Expert Patrick B - 12/12/2012

The product came well packaged... on the second shipment! The first one was open and not good looking. Stuff happens, and it was corrected very quickly by etrailer reshipping a perfectly new Jack. And it works good and is really strong. Very happy with etrailer service and the Bulldog product.

After a year, product works as it should, I am very happy.
Gilles - 01/24/2020

I should say that I initially ordered a different unit that was substantially less money. Unfortunately that one was on back order, which i did not know at the time I placed the order. With that said I had researched this one and the reviews seemed good. Packaging upon receipt was not 100% intact. The unit itself seemed fine. Installation was easy up until the point of installing the leg/foot. I had to use a floor jack to lift the trailer high enough to install the extension leg. I can't see another option so be prepared with a jack and several heavy boards to get enough height for insertion. Be sure to clean the trailer location where the mounting base makes contact. This will help insure a good ground and without that good grounding surface the unit will not operate.
- Heavy duty feel.
- Motor seems very strong.
- No problem lifting truck and trailer high enough for WD hitch bar installation.
- LED Lights are excellent.
- Extension leg is very nice to work with, saves time during set up / break down.

- Price, I think this could be priced a little lower based upon features and competitive units of the same rating.
- Slow...really slow. without the extension leg this would be a major negative. As it is its only an inconvenience.
- Head size, doesn't allow tailgate of truck to open all the way.

  • Will Bulldog Powered Jack BD500187 Fit Tear Trailer on A-Frame Trailer
As long as you have an A-frame jack installed on your trailer currently the Bulldog Powered Jck part # BD500187 will easily fit and replace it. There isn't a wheel assembly for this or any of the other powered jacks because the wheels don't have very high capacities and it would greatly limit the capacity of the jack. The jack weighs 22 lbs and would be considered as tongue weight on your trailer.

The total travel includes the 14 inches of lift of the motor plus the 8 inches of the drop leg when it is fully extended.
