Simple Removal for Full Bed Access

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to a custom underbed mounting kit (sold separately) with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work. When you're done towing, the entire hitch can be removed for complete bed access.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Assembly of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, first bolt the included RV post to the Companion's base. This post is what inserts into the hole in your truck bed. The RV post attaches to the base in 1 of 2 ways to allow for improved cab clearance and proper positioning over your truck's axle.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you the cab clearance needed to execute turns while towing.

Companion 3500 Base Diagram

To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base. The above diagram gives an indication of where to mount the arms so that you get the height and the cab clearance that you need.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

The construction of this hitch is very heavy duty. The reason I gave this a low rating was due to the condition it was in when it arrived. There were parts missing. One of the handles that releases the upper hitch from the base was bent. There were numerous chips and deep scratches in the paint. For the amount of money I spent on this hitch I expected it to be brand new and undamaged. I sent emails with pictures to etrailer, they were supposed to issue me a credit but I never heard back from them.

This part of the installation is easy. There are two main pieces. Fasten runners on the bottom of each of the two legs that sit in the bed grooves. Attach the large square pin that goes in the hole in the bed to the main base(there are several bolting patterns depending on where you want the 5th wheel assembly to sit in the bed) and set it in place. Item is heavy even without the upper part (5th wheel plate assembly). Best done by two people. 5th wheel plate assembly also heavy, but can be handled by one person. The directions are clear, easy to understand. Very nice clean setup.

Easy to install and remove. Loosen one bolt and pull a pin. It’s heavy, but I use my tractor with forks to remove it. This thing is built sturdy and looks great.

by:

Build quality was great and it looks perfect. My only issue is they should supply hard washers and better quality lock washers. 2 of them bent so bad I had to remove them and file the heads to get the huge burrs off to tru to seat another one. If you supply high strength bolts you need to supply a higher grade lock washer it it just tears up the power coat .

I am 100% satisfied with this product and every product I have ordered from etrailer. The instructions were simple and direct and installation was a breeze. It is solid and smooth and I look forward to getting a lot of use out ot it. Thank you for providing quality products.

I haven’t pull the 5th wheeler yet, but the B&W Companion is a super heavy duty hitch and it looks like it will handle the job. The installation of the hitch went well. The instructions were pretty straight forward. No problems.

by:

Hi Melissa . I did receive my Companion fifth wheel hitch assembly 24 March . All parts are accounted for and undamaged . Shipping box to the base assembly was damaged going across my driveway Minor . Only problems I have is no paper billing , probably lost in the delivery truck , and we have had continual rain for days . I will have to wait for that to stop before I can continue . You have been a great help ; thank you very much .

by:

I purchaaed the B& W Companion to work along with the B&W underbed gooseneck rail system, as my truck was not factory equipped. I just completed a 1200 mile trip towing a 14k lbs. 5th wheel camper, and I was exceptionally pleased with both components. There was no chucking or issues of any sort in towing, and this 5th wheel hitch performed very well. I would recommend both components without any hesitation, as they are very rugged and of very high quality construction. You will not be disappointed.

by:

Ordered the companion hitch to use with the turnover hitch that I also purchased from etrailer. Shipped quickly and was easy to install and adjust for my setup. Item arrived in perfect condition.

by:

Just finished installing my B&W Companion 5th Wheel hitch. I hooked to my RV to check my instillation, everything went very smooth.
I would recommend this hitch to anyone with a Gooseneck turnover ball B&W hitch installed in there truck bed. Great product, very easy instillation.

This hitch is working out great. Easy to take out and put in. Two of my friends have purchased this hitch after seeing how great they work. Love my hitch!

Prior to the Companion hitch I now have in my 2018 Ram I had a Patriot hitch for my 2003 Ram. Both hitches have preformed without question. I could not be more satisfied with the performance of either of these top of the line hitches, from their install to the solid locking of the hitch when it is engaged to the camper. I travel with insurance that my trailer will be with me when I get to my destination.

by:

Great hitch works perfect tip on installing use step ladder in back of truck to use a cable hoist to pull up and hold center section I back truck up on a set of ramps to have more room

Love the companion. Its easy to assemble and install. It's so nice do be able to have the full bed of my truck by just removing the hitch when not pulling my camper!!

by:

awesome unit, i think B&W is the best in the business, so easy to hook up it super quite when traveling takes 5 minutes to to install and uninstall from a turnover ball. super glad i bought this one.

by:

We received our new BW Companion hitch on time. Noticed that our BW Turnover Ball hitch already installed in truck required a shorter socket post one week out from our trip. With a quick discussion with the great people at etrailer as well as BW, we had the new socket post shipped and installed prior to leaving town. Easy install - All worked as designed. So glad to have responsive parties involved here to help us out. Thanks!

by:

Great 5th wheel trailer hitch, the only negative was the lack of installation documentation. We had to go online to find the step-by-step instruction, would have been nice if it came with the hardware

by:

Molly Just wanted to send you some pictures of my 1991 Ford F250 with my new BW fifth wheel trailer hitch that I recently purchased from the trailer The service from etrailer was excellent I will recommend you to anyone who asks

by:

Received my companion hitch in two days. Free delivery. Couldn’t believe how fast it shipped. I installed it myself in 3 hours. The hitch is rock solid and built heavy. I can’t wait to hook on to my camper and try it out. It is very easy to install. A second person would be useful to set base.

by:

I recently bought the gooseneck and fifth wheel b&w hitches to install on my 2008 f 250. I could not be more happy with the products and customer service that etrailer provides. I also bought The Pollack t connector that was also easy to use. The install was done at home and easy to understand. Thanks again.

by:

I would like to say that I was not looking forward to putting this hitch on my truck. I heard nothing but nightmares and horror stories, but it couldn't be farther from the truth. I had a friend come over to help (glad I did cause that turnoverball hitch would have been a bear to hold up by yourself. It was ten times easier than I would have imagined. Just follow the instructions and it's a piece of cake. We had the turnover all hitch on in less than 2 hours. Unfortunately I had a rusted brake line that I had to repair before completing the job. Haven't used it yet but can't wait to hitch it up and hit the road. Thanks for making this hitch so easy to install. I'm glad it's American made and extremely heavy duty.

Great product which works well with my Grand Design 5th wheel, very smooth no chucking. Have is on my 2017 Ford F-250 super duty.

There is no difference between B&W Companion part numbers # BWRVK3500 and # BWRVK3500-5W. We just have slightly different part numbers for the same hitch which allows it to show up in two categories through our fit guide. The 5W just stands for fifth wheel.

The included foot pads of that come with the B and W Companion Hitch # BWRVK3500-5W are designed to be used regardless if there is corrugation on the truck bed or not. The shape of them does allow them to fit in corrugation if needed which is nice. If you weren't to use them the hitch wouldn't make contact with the truck bed to support the load of the trailer. • 5th Wheel Hitch Recommendation
Since you are buying a 5th wheel trailer, I would recommend a 5th wheel hitch because it will be the safest and most secure way to tow a 5th wheel trailer. Using an adapter can put more stress on the trailer. I would be more than happy to make a recommendation, but I would need to know the year, make, model, bed length and cab style of your truck. You can also view the link I provided to enter your own year/make/model to view the rail kits. I included a helpful article for you too.

You will definitely want to use 60 ft/lbs like the installation instructions indicate.

  • Bed Liner Compatibility with B & W Fifth Wheel Hitch
I called B & W to double check, and they recommend either removing the plastic bed liner or cutting out the liner where the Companion Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3500-5W will rest. This is so the hitch has the best possible surface to rest on. Additionally, the fifth wheel trailer hitch would likely crush the plastic bed liner. The liner could also prevent the hitch from inserting into the gooseneck hitch. A spray-in bed liner will not present a problem for a fifth wheel trailer hitch.

The feet in the base of the Companion should not be removed from the hitch; these need to rest within the bed's corrugations. I checked with B&W and with the Companion hitch # BWRVK3500-5W you would either need to remove the bedliner or trim it in the footprint of the entire base so it will have direct contact with the bed. • Common Causes for 5th Wheel Trailer Sway
Trailers tow best when level and when loaded so that they have an appropriate pin weight, which for a 5th wheel trailer will be 20 to 25% of the gross (GVWR). Trailers with too little pin weight (or too little tongue weight if they are the bumper pull type) will tend to have too much weight in the rear and this can lead to sway problems. Other common causes for trailer sway are worn tires and a worn or misaligned suspension. If for example, only one leaf spring on an axle were replaced...

If your 2018 Ram 3500 has the long bed (8 feet), you should be able to simply lock out the Revolution King Pin on your new trailer. The reason the B&W Companion # BWRVK3500-5W isn't compatible with the Sidewinder/Revolution is simply because it changes the pivot point of the king pin. With a long bed truck, you won't actually need this extended pivot point, so it can be simply locked out so that it does not pivot at the turret. This will make it so the only pivot point is at the hitch itself,...

These foot pads are only manufactured by B&W for the BWRVK3500-5W hitch that fits any truck with the turnover ball.
