It was as advertised. Arrived sooner then expected. Our son is a super tech & installed it in about an hour. The step drill is key and watching install video a few times. U won't be towing anything but have a great bike rack. Now very little lifting & no more taking front wheel off for roof rack.

2014 Subaru Forester

etrailer was extremely fast at processing and shipping my order. The hitch was installed on a 2014 Subaru Forester and was very easy to install. It fits perfectly snug underneath the vehicle and there is no wasted space. Hitch seems to be well made and very strong with good welds. I'm sure it would pull a trailer much too big for the Forester. You can also use tin snips to cut a notch out of the heat shield in the area where the hitch bolts are and reattach it with 3 screws. So you won't have to discard the heat shield. I did the installation without help and used a couple of cheap jack stands to hold the hitch up in place. I didn't even need to jack the vehicle up. To enlarge the center hole, I used a cheap ($18) step bit from Harbor Freight. It's a little easier and quicker than filing or routing. The only warning I would give is NOT to buy the hitch pin - it is secured only with a weak spring clip and there is no hole for a cotter pin. This is unacceptable and I certainly would not trust it even across the driveway. Do yourself a favor and purchase one at a hardware store and you can secure it with a proper pin or through-hole clip. I also ordered the wiring kit and it was easy to install with good instructions and works great.

I just installed this hitch on a 2016 Forester. First, the hitch and hardware were all in perfect condition. The instructions were detailed and very helpful. Now that it's installed, it looks great and feels solid. I'm glad I had a nice bit on a my die grinder for the step of widening the two holes, I'm sure a step drill would make easy work of that too. I had never used the fishwire procedure before, but it was very easy and worked great. After plenty of searching, etrailer had the best price for this hitch and followed it up with free and fast shipping, awesome customer service, and most importantly a great product from a great selection. By the way, this is my third hitch from etrailer, the other two are on my WRXs :) Still strong, years long

Subaru

I was originally just looking for a bike rack for my wife's 2014 Subaru Forrester. After viewing the website and watching the instructional video I decided installing a trailer hitch would be the way to go. Living in Missouri I received the hitch the next day. The hitch is top quality and installed with ease. I did decide to fish the bolts through the top inside of the vehicle because I didn't like the idea of enlarging the hole that was an attachment point. Simply pop up the two black buttons on each side to remove the foam, they pop back in when your finished for access. Enlarging the hole shown puts you directly above the center attachment hole. As shown in the pictures I enlarged the hole inside the vehicle and then sealed with butyl tape, Fishing from the top was very easy. I also only removed the minimum amount of heat shield to allow for the bolts and flattened/sandwiched the shield between frame and hitch to eliminate any chance of a rattle. Now I only have to pick out a bicycle rack which I will definitely be ordering from etrailer.com

Easy install if you have the right tools and have basic knowledge. You do have to drill out one hole so have a drill and bore bit. I use it for a Thule bike rack. And a small trailer. Works great for my 2016 Forester.

2015 Subaru Forester

I just purchased a 2015 Subaru Forester and needed a hitch for it. To have the dealer install would have been $700 and would have only been the 1 1/4" hitch. I wanted a 2" and have seen good reviews on the Curt hitch. I got confirmation from Curt that this did indeed fit the newest forester and so made the purchase. I thought about doing the install myself, but for $80, the local trailer dealership around here would do the install in an hour and be held liable for any damage done. And since I have no experience with car stuff and did not want to take a chance with doing any sort of damage to the vehicle, I brought it in. It turned out nice. I needed a 4" lift for the ball mount so that my trailer would be nice and level. Also needed to pick up the extended version of it so that it would clear the back bumper of the car. Haven't towed anything yet, but over the next few days, I'll test out the 1500lb towing capacity and see how it works.

Comments
How did your testing go?When you said you would test the capacity, do you mean your trailer is exactly 1500?How heavy is your trailer?

The hitch seems to work really well on our 2015 Forester. It has only been used to hold a bike rack (it is only a Forester) It installed in under four beer's time and was very easy using the fish wires provided. I used small channel locks to bend the hole out and make access for the bolts. The tricky part was holding the receiver in place while spinning the first two nuts on. A jack stand or strong helper is recommended for sure. The receiver does lower the angle of departure quite a bit.

We purchased this hitch for our Subaru to haul our bikes. This hitch installed easily and is holding up very well even in our winter salted environment. The finish is like the day it was installed. Solid hitch!

Got the hitch for bike mount. I did not like the instructions telling me to widen the holes or to get rid of the heat shields. I modified the heat shields and removed the bumper to put the bolts through the frame. Mufflers had to be removed to install the hitch. Removing the bumper did not take long.

Materials are high quality. The installation instructions, paper and online, are clear. Really appreciated the installation aid tools, especially the wires to fish the bolts and reinforcements up inside of the car frame. The hitch nested perfectly under our 2018 Forrester, and fit with amazing precision around the spare tire well. I did this by myself and used a floor jack to help lift the hitch into place. This worked nicely so I’m sharing a photo of that. One lesson learned was that you do have to unscrew the bolts from the fishing wire or else they won’t fit through the slots in the rack. I was pleasantly surprised to see how precisely it all fit. The installation is rock solid and is nicely hidden away. I was very happy that this unit didn’t require me to cut through my bumper. Overall it took me about 2 hours, maybe a bit longer, FYI.

I took a star off because the hitch is too narrow and contacts the spare tire well on both sides with no side to side adjustability. It would not sit flush on the frame rails until drawn to the full 110 ft-lbs. Installation took 2.5 hours without enlarging any holes in the frame rails and besides the holes in the heatshields is reversible. I have arthritic hands and worked alone when it was 91 degrees and I stopped multiple times to get tools/refreshments/wash my hands and tools. Knowing what I needed beforehand I doubt it would take more than 1.5 to do it again. The bumper cover/mud flap (green) required 8mm, 10mm, and a small screw driver. The bumper support (blue) used 14mm. The Curt hardware is marked in yellow. The disassembly is straightforward and once the bumper support is removed you can easily place the carriage bolts within the frame rails using the fishwires. I used a section of 2x10, two 2x4 cutoffs, and four 3 inch deck screws to create a balanced platform to raise the hitch into place. Once the nuts are on lower the jack and unscrew from the bottom. Reassembly took maybe twenty minutes. Note: My Forester XT has an aftermarket cat-back exhaust system with mufflers 1/3 the size of the OE units so I was able to complete the install with it in place. The Magnaflows are narrow enough that they don’t block access to any of the heatshield bolts or frame rails.

Fits perfectly and the wire harness was what I was really worried about and it was crazy easy to install. I feel silly for worrying. If you have basic skills and tools it's easy to install.

This review is for packaging and shipping I have not installed the hitch yet. I came Home to find the hitch hanging out of the box on my front porch. Upon further review it appears the box does not have enough support by the brackets that attach to the car frame. There was no damage to the hitch except a few scratches but they will be hidden under the car. I completed the installation last night took about 1 1/2 hours went as planned I am just a little slow is all. This is the second one I have done and they both installed as per the directions.

First the positive: Product is excellent, everything was there in the box and it fits perfectly under my 2015 Forester. Now the less positive: I read the instructions that came with the hitch receiver and they made little sense to me. Enlarge the middle hole and pass the bolts through there? I didn't make sense, especially to install the bolt/spacer in that hole. Luckily, I watched the video and they say in it to not follow the instructions and use the rear access hole. My question is then: Why not correct the instructions? Also, I didn't like that they enlarge the access hole with pry bars in the video since I wanted to be able to put the plug back in place so here's what I did. I took a reciprocating saw and made four little notch, allowing me to bend two tabs (see pictures). After passing all bolts and spacers, I fold the tabs back and the plug fit perfectly Finally, they don't re-install the heat shield in the video (2016 Forester installation video) but I knew better since I watched other videos for other products. I simply made cuts in mine to fit the bolt holes. In summary, excellent product but some work needs to be done to correct the instructions. Luckily, the site has plenty of videos to help you find the perfect solution. This is why I still give it 5 stars.

2015 Subaru Forester

So, I was concerned about the length of the Curt 13144 hitch for my 2015 Subaru Forrester. The pics on etrailer for the 2015 showed a short receiver (tucked in 3-4" under the bumper) and the 2016 pics showed a longer hitch receiver for the same part number, which extended almost even with the end of the bumper. I read some reviews online for this hitch for the Forrester and some people had issues with mounting things with the shorter hitch, so I was concerned about which one I'd be receiving (i wanted the longer one). I don't know if Curt changed the design some time in 2015 or what. I called and brought this up with Angela, she was very helpful and took the time to understand my concerns. I took the chance and ordered it with her, and it was the right part, perfect for the vehicle. Angela stayed with me (via email) through shipping, delivery and even post-purchase, making herself available via phone if I wanted. The customer service at etrailer is excellent! I wish every company could take a lesson from them. Like many others have experienced, the box was torn in 3 places, but it didn't affect the integrity or finish of the part. This hitch is incredibly durable and well constructed. My installation went without a hitch (pun intended!). I followed the Curt video. There are many helpful hints in people's comments that I won't repeat...I used them all, including trimming and keeping my heat shield. A few points. It wasn't clear if I should jack the car up or not. I ended up jacking with a floor jack and set the car on jack stands. It was a very good work height and I'd recommend it to others. My biggest trepidation based on reviews/feedback was dealing with the rubber exhaust hangers, but it was really easy as long as you lubricate them (i.e., WD40). I guess people who struggled didn't lubricate the rubber hangers. I mean, it was SO easy. Took me 1 minute to undo 3 hangers and 1 minute to re-attach at the end of the job. One little thing that might help...when removing the fish wires from the bolts, just pull them taught and start unscrewing. The tension from pulling on it keeps the carriage bolt from spinning and its much faster/easier than trying to hold the bolt and unscrew the fish wires. The only special tool I had to get was a step bit that went to 1 1/8" ($19 @ Harbor Freight). I believe it was a textbook install and from the time I took out my first tool to the time I put my last one away it was just under 2 hours...and I'm not a particularly efficient worker. I like to take my time and double-check things as I go. Your mileage may vary.

Great product and quick delivery. Installation was a bit more complicated than I expected but I just took my time and finished successfully. One thing--in order to accommodate the mounting bolts and plates, the center hole needs to be widened quite a bit more than the illustration suggests. I didn't have the recommended die grinder but I got by with a step drill bit and rotary file.

The trailer hitch receiver, mount and ball assembly were all received in good condition and earlier than anticipated. There are multiple videos available on line for the installation so the directions were not critical for installing and this review. Every item in the package is heavy duty & of high quality and installed easily and exactly as expected. The assembly will be used to tow a 400 lb 5 x 7 trailer. I cannot comment on towing performance yet but I expect it will be very satisfactory. I am very satisfied and would use etrailer again for future purchases.

I chose the Curt class II trailer hitch & Curt wiring harness. The videos along with the customer comments and reviews were very helpful making the installation go smoothly. I backed the car up on ramps to get working room. The hardware provided had much larger heads than shown in the video so I enlarged the 4th hole in order to pull the blocks and bolts thru. The rest of the installation went smoothly. The tube cover with American Flag made a nice finish to the installation. Just an FYI, I have see the same tube cover on several other vehicles in the area. It looks good.

I am very happy with the service provided by e trailer.com, They truly have the lowest prices and if you find a lower price they'll match and give you an additional 10% discount!!!! This hitch is very sturdy and for the price I think it is the best bang for your buck... I followed your install video completely however I don't understand why Curt recommends that the heat shield be removed. I installed the hitch with the heat shield and all i needed to do was to drill two 1/2 inch holes where the R and M are located in the heat shield (there is a pilot indentation there) this area of the heat shield is where the hitch will attach to the car and then I reattached the shield back into the car before attaching the hitch. I don't have a lot of mechanical skills and it took me about 3 hrs to install this hitch by myself and taking breaks in between to wait for paint to dry. I painted with rust resistant paint and undercoating the areas that I enlarged/drilled. Enlarging the holes was the most time consuming part in my opinion but it didn't took that much either I used a Titanium Nitride Coated High Speed Steel Step Drill Bit and enlarged the hole up to 1 3/8. getting it on the car by myself was difficult but I used 2 floor jack towers to hold the hitch in place and that helped but it would have been easier having an extra set of hands to hold it while screwing the bolts I also painted the hitch 3 days prior with 3M rubberized undercoating to give an additional layer of rust proofing I am very pleased with the way it looks on my 2015 Forester. Thanks etrailer.com, I highly recommend, and will definitely buy from you guys again!!!

2017 Subaru Forester

2017 Subaru Forester Curt Hitch receiver was real easy to install. First review the video ( Etrailer web page), will help a bit specially where to cut part of the muffler heat shield. I cut mine enough to clear the three mounting holes. This way the hitch will squeeze the shield in place as you will be be missing one shield mounting screw. Also, easier too if you have a floor jack. The hitch is pretty much balanced with a floor jack at the center and threading the fish hooks through its holes, jack it up, Install the nuts and done. For enlarging the middle bolt holes, I used a grinder. Make sure you wear safety glass or shield and face mask. Forester have plenty of room without lifting the rear end. Important caution, do not remove the fish hooks until you are ready to replace it with the bolt nuts. Hold the bolt with needle nose or similar while (start) threading the nuts or you will push it back the hole and... Trailer lights?? you need to get the wire harness that's made for the vehicle. The one I got (Curt custom wiring #56040) fit with the coupler included in my car. The harness instructions will tell the location of the car harness coupler. Good luck. Stay Safe..

Fast shipping and helpful customer service, in that the original hitch i ordered was going to be delayed, due to out of stock. so i ordered the Curt. The instructions that came with the hitch were clear and easy to follow, but I watched the video, which suggests widening the furthest forward hole, which is already a bit bigger than the three that you put the bolts through. I drilled two holes next to the big hole (so it looked like mickey mouse - sorry i did not take a picture), then just bent the "tab" of metal between my two holes out of the way to fish through the bolts and the flat pieces of metal which prevent the bolts from turning. once i fished everything through (very easy and fun, even), i bent the tabs back into place and replaced the rubber stopper. I also followed the comments from others on the website and trimmed the muffler heat shield so as to leave the bolt holes for the hitch exposed, then reinstalled it with three of the four screws. I lowered the muffler, and held it in place with a strap, like the video suggests. The install went easily, but did take me about three hours. The receiver end of the hitch ends up a couple inches shorter than the end of the bumper, so there is no chance of smashing your shins against it, and it is very tight up to the bottom of the bumper as well. It does not appear that it will impede any type of 4 wheeling in the Forester, which was also a concern, as I see some hitches on cars are so big, that it would impact clearance.

Very great product. I went to the dealership to ask them about a hitch and they wanted over $800 to install one, and that did not include a wire harness. So I shopped around, and found this site. I ordered the hitch and wire harness for a fraction of what the dealer was asking. I received everything within 4 days, got a conformation email within minutes of ordering saying my shipment was being prepared. Then received an email a few hours later saying it was shipped. Very good customer service. The install was very simple also. Came with all the instructions and hardware to complete very easy. Instructions said install would take about an hour, I had it installed in about 30 minutes. Looks very clean on the vehicle. I would recommend this site and product to anyone. Since putting it on I have hauled a piano, dirt, and other stuff in the trailer with no problems. Thank you so much!

  • Differences Between Curt Class III Trailer Hitches for 2015 Subaru Forester
The primary difference between the two is that once installed, the # C13144 will be completely visible from the rear of the vehicle. The # CU64FR is designed a bit differently, the hitch crossbar will be concealed behind the bumper with the only visible portion of the hitch being the receiver tube and the safety chain hoops. The # CU64FR is preferred by most because the entire hitch isn't visible. Because we pay more for the hitch and it's more in demand, the # C13144 is priced higher....

Your 2015 Subaru Forester can be equipped with your choice of two sizes of hitch, either a 1-1/4-inch Class II type such as Curt # C12100 or a 2-inch Class III type such as Curt # C13144. Both will install in the same manner using their included hardware and the time and effort required is essentially the same for both. Given this, I suggest you opt for the 2-inch Class III hitch. A 2-inch Class III hitch is stronger and will have the flexibility to allow broader use than a 1-1/4-inch...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Subaru Forester 2.5L and SportRack Bike Carrier
For your 2017 Subaru Forester 2.5L, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13144. This will work very well for the SportRack Ridge Swing 4 Bike Rack - 2" Hitches - Swinging # SR2415. You may want to consider the Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock # SR0901 and the etrailer 10' Long Cable Lock # e98891 run through the chain loops of the hitch and the bike frames. You may also want the adapter bar # 64005 for any step-thru frames for level towing and ground clearance.

  • Trailer Hitch and Trailer Taillight Wiring Recommended for 2015 Subaru Forester
I'd recommend a Curt Class III hitch, as Curt manufactures a nice product and they do a great job on their durable powder coat finish. I'd recommend either the # C13144 which is a standard or # CU64FR which is a concealed hitch. Once installed, the # C13144 would be fully visible and the # CU64FR would have the crossbar concealed with only the receiver and the safety chain loops visible. The hitches both have the same capacity, but the concealed version requires a much more extensive installation,...

  • Draw-Tite or Curt Ball Mount With 1 Inch Rise for 2017 Subaru Forester
For your 2017 Subaru Forester, between the Curt Ball Mount # C45030 and Draw-Tite Ball Mount # 2923, I recommend the Draw-Tite # 2923. I like the Draw-Tite because not only does it come with a pin and clip (the Curt does not and would need Pin and Clip # PC3), but it is longer by about 1 inch, so you have a bit of extra clearance. That can come in handy with your Forester when towing with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13144, which is recessed under the bumper. The Draw-Tite Ball...

  • How Much Does the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver C13144 Weigh
The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # C13144, has a shipping weight of 35 pounds. There isn't a lot of packaging that goes with a hitch so the actual weight of the hitch is around 30 pounds or so.

  • Which Class III Trailer Hitch for a 2017 Subaru Forester has the Best Ground Clearance
Hidden Hitch as a brand is being phased out but the same company makes Draw-Tite hitches. So for your 2017 Subaru Forester the Draw-Tite Class III hitch is # 75876. When we installed this hitch on a 2017 Subaru Forester, see video link, it measured 13-3/4 inches from the ground to the top of the receiver opening. So to the bottom of the receiver that distance would be approximately 11-1/2 inches. The other Class III option is Curt hitch # C13144. When we installed it the distance from...

  • Will 2015 Subaru Forester Exhaust Damage the Kuat NV 2.0 Bike Rack
With Curt 2 inch trailer hitch # C13144 installed on your 2015 Subaru Forester there should be around 4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the rear bumper. When installed in the hitch the Kuat NV # NV22G will be about 6-1/2 inches from the back of the rear bumper to the closest part of the rack. But there is also a 3-1/2 inch rise in the shank of the bike rack which will effectively move it out of the path of the exhaust. The issue is not the vehicle muffler but...

  • Ball Mount With 1 Inch Rise That Extends More Than 6-1/2 Inches & Fits 2 Inch Trailer Hitch
We can get you set up with a longer ball mount that has 1 inch of rise and will fit your 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. There is a really good option from Curt that is extended and will work perfectly for you: - Curt Solid Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 1" Rise, 2" Drop - 10" Long # C45312 This ball mount measures 10 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole so it will give you the clearance you need. Then to secure the ball mount to your hitch, you will...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2015 Subaru Forester
My recommendation for a trailer hitch for your 2015 Subaru Forester is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 75876. It is a Class lll hitch and has a 2 inch receiver opening. It has a towing capacity at 3,500 lbs and a tongue weight of 525 lbs. I prefer the Draw-Tite over the Curt hitch, part # C13144 because does not require you to use stabilizing straps like part # 18050 for non-trailer loads as the Curt hitch requires. The Curt hitch does have the same towing capacity as the other hitches...

  • Support Strap for Curt Trailer Hitch for 2015 Forester
Curt requires the stabilizing/support strap, # 18050, in order to alleviate the leveraging affect that a non-trailer load places on a hitch. At Curt they like to use the example of carrying a gallon of milk. Think of the strain that would be put on your arm if it is extended opposed to if you carry the milk close to your body. This is what also happens with a hitch when a bike rack or cargo carrier is mounted. Although the hitch itself will support a bike rack or cargo carrier, it puts...

  • Will Removing Heatshield For Installation of Hitch Cause Damage to Subaru Forester
My technical contact at Curt assured me that removing the heat shield when installing the Curt hitch # C13144 on your 2015 Subaru Forester will not cause damage to your vehicle. The law mandating the heat shield requirement was originally geared toward muscle cars when they got too hot and gas can spill out and catch the backside of the vehicle on fire. Since then, gas tanks have multiple layers of protection and the heat build up in a regular versus muscle car are drastically different....

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2014 Subaru Forester with Best Bumper Clearance
I wasn't able to find your order notes so I am not sure what hitch you have, but the Curt part # C13144 would be the one for your 2014 Subaru Forester that would stick out the most. From the center of it's hitch pin hole to the furthest point out it measures 3-1/2 inches. The hitch opening is basically totally flush with the bumper so you wouldn't need any type of extension with this rack.
